On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Just wondered if anyone has been having a go with this Beasts of War/Corvus Belli event, and if so how they have been getting on with it? (and have any recommendations etc?)

Loving it. Ran a Wotan themed ITS tournament a couple of weekends ago and have since been inspired to get off my ass and get a weekly game in. One of the things I really like about the campaign this time around is the option to make a 'club', which shows the impact on the campaign amongst a small group of players, making it feels like the battles really count as the impact can be seen straight away. The updates from CB which reference individual commanders are a really nice touch too, as well as the prize support that they're offering. The 50% off bundles were great as well.

Initially, I had planned to.
But then life intervened and tossed that plan out the window. I only get enough time for a couple of games a month, and it's hard enough getting people to understand ITS missions, without going to variant mission types.

I might make an effort. I may get one game in before phase2 hits, but more than likely, not.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

No need to do the variant ITS missions, there's a option to select a custom mission. I did Baconland from the Fat Yuan Yuan missions for example https://wotan.warconsole.com/battles/tyrannosaurus-vs-swizzletc-1497307789

So, feel free to do 20x20, YAMS, Paradiso, Fat Yuan Yuan, whatever, at any points level you want, and stick the result up

So "no need to use a variant ITS mission, just use this other variant mission" ... huh? Did I miss something.

None of my group bought the floating fatman nor have any interest in encouraging the fanatic peat (so it and any other running jokes - or in the case of FYY, wheezing and staggering jokes), so anything associated with it will continue to be ignored.

Phase 2 has just started and I haven't even played a game for phase 1 yet. As I said, it will be over before I get more than a single game in, and that's fine with me. Given that what I've seen from the forums, the same unsavoury characters have populated the world again, and it's something I don't want to be part of.

I was planning to, but no one in our group has spaceship themed tables. It kind of kills the mood when, for example, your Zero G guys come busting through the exterior hatches of a jungle. If they do another one themed around ground battles, I'll possibly give it a go.

Also our group tends to go in cycles of Infinity and Malifaux. Right now we're in the middle of a Malifaux cycle due to someone starting up.

I am doing my best to get games in, but I need to get my digital camera fixed first.

My point was that you can play any mission you want and log it as a custom mission - there's an option for that in the drop-down. You don't have to do the Wotan missions, or, indeed, the FYY missions; I was just using that as an example.

In terms of 'unsavoury characters' I can't really comment as I don't really know what you mean, but the campaign has given extra impetus to get in more games against my regular opponents, and I've been loving writing short stories. The option to create a 'club' has facilitated local players taking part in a mini-campaign, which is also a great feature. Anyway, each to their own.

I do sort of get this and would have loved to have created a spaceship board, however it's not too much of a stretch to say that a jungle is a hydroponics area - we're talking pretty massive vessels. Desert style terrain works perfectly for the Haqq meteor, and city style terrain for Nomad ships. The Neon Lotus terrain is supposed to represent the interior of a Yu Jing vessel so a couple of packs of that and you're good to go.

Really love the sound of some of this, am hoping to get some games in surrounding it over the next few weeks.

Haha Chromedog, I have to say your avatar seems to completely match your comments, can imagine that character saying those things

Incidentally the spaceship board is one of the things that has been one of those special projects that I've been thinking about for so long.. have half of it inside the craft, then an outer hull for the other half. But it's always a time thing..!

For an asteroid/moon board.. how about using a desert board, then lighting the room with a dim light (or though some colour filter?) Or at the very least photoshopping AAR pics with a bit of black and white?

By "unsavoury" I meant the schoolyard levels of smacktalk that wouldn't be out of place in that square ring play-fighting* irritainment. I thought it was tiresome at school - and as I got older, it only got more tiresome.

It's also the sort of behaviour oft found on MMPOL games - and one of the reasons I don't do that stuff, either. If I want to be smacktalked to by a 12 year old, I can go down the road to the local school, I don't need to hear it/read it while playing a game.

It also reeks of over-investment - like what is also seen in the supporters of various sporting team activities. Sure, I get it, they want to role play - but I restrict role-play to the bedroom OR to the RPG based off the minatures wargame - I don't need to roleplay faceless mook #21 on the tabletop.

*Some call it "wrestling".

@Pacific: As it says in my sig. I'm 49 and somewhat old and crusty. I game for the social aspect and the making aspect (the game is the reason I put the models together. The painting is because I don't field unpainted models.).

I played/GM'd cyberpunk/post/transhuman rpgs for about 30 years (including playing Shadowrun skirmish tabletop on an urban city board with a working monorail, flashing lights, etc).

I've spoken against such behavior in my sport club. It simply takes away something from the event, even should the opponent acted in bad manners, that's inadequate reason to let yourself down on his level.

At lest from what I've seen from PanO forum, things tend to be more civilized than previous campaign (if you discount the maddening spam of Deus Vult). Haven't got the time or motivation to keep an eye for entire development and behavior of others.

Wait, I'm confused; who said anything about roleplay? Some of the more enthusiastic members might make posts on FB or on the Wotan console while 'in character', however roleplay is not a pre-requisite in any way of taking part in the campaign. Just play whatever game you want, log it, and it counts towards your faction's progress.

Personally I love the new missions, Kill Cage is a lot of fun.

I've played 5 games so far, lost 4 and drew 1. I probably shouldn't have joined the campaign with my existing track record of 0 wins... letting PanO down!

Although it doesn't help if not many of the local players actually WANT to play in the campaign, either.

Not that I blame them. We're a very "casual" lot. Light on the "banter" and heavier on the "winner buys the beer".

I'm also usually giving the new guys lessons in playing the game (they've move past the intro-games and demos and have probably played all the scenarios in icestorm/red veil and are now learning to play at 300pts. So I ask them what they want to learn about, and show them those aspects during the game). It's much more rewarding to me.

I took part in the Paradiso campaign, and it was entertaining enough. this time round, no-one locally is really bothered. I could just play games and write them up for the campaign anyway, but without my friends buying in, what's the point? I've got no connection with or interest in what players three thousand miles away I'll never meet are doing.

My battle reports were rather dull - a couple of paragraphs of "I did this with one model, then something else with that one, then the other guy did this with those models) accompanied by some poorly-lit photographs - but they were still vastly superior to a lot of the ones I looked at; "I played this mission, with this army, against that guy", with one photo if you were lucky; the bare minimum to get the 2vp or whatever for submitting a report.

I quite liked the scenarios for the Paradiso campaign - even if they were just ITS missions with an environmental effect, they were something a little out the ordinary, so I expect the Wotan ones are the same. I don't really have any appropriate scenery for the various space installations, though.

I take it by 'Paradiso' you mean the Operation Flamestrike campaign? Obviously there were a lot of no particularly good write-ups, but there were also some absolutely fantastic ones. The quality this time around seems to be much higher across the board after lots of the Yu Jing results were discounted due to not meeting the basic requirements, which altered the overall result.

The scenarios are a lot of fun again, and hopefully some of them make it into next season's ITS. It terms of scenery, the Neon Lotus pack is supposed to represent a space station, the Haqq area is an asteroid so rocky/sandy mat should be good, etc. etc. Absolutely loving it.
