So I just got the Chaos index for FW units today and I'm really excited with a lot of it, a small critique is that everything I used in 7th got more expensive but here's hoping for a way to incorporate all the stuff I want for my CSM.

In addition to all the new stuff that arrived, I'm exceptionally hyped for the two new characters that Have entered the stage: The Chaos Hellwright and the Hellwright on abeyant. With the new faction Keyword of Dark Mechanicus how long do you think we will see this as a faction fleshed out by either FW or GW?

I've been wondering this myself. Is it possible to field a proper Dark Mechanicus/Dark Mechanicum list in 8e? I know there are many additional Mechanicum units for Horus Heresy but I am guessing they do not have 8e rules, or do any of them?

The rules as currently written wouldn't support it, but could a person take Adeptus Mechanicus from the 8e Index Imperium 2, and have their <FORGE WORLD> be <DARK MECHANICUS> and replace <IMPERIUM> with <CHAOS>?

How many units even have the faction keyword Dark Mechanicus, are there more in Imperial Armour Index Astra Militarum or Space Marines?

I think there will be when the renegades release in the AM index.

Currently only the Hellwrigts and the knights/titans have the DM keywords.

Is Dark Mechanicum in < > or is it like Imperium where it's just a bolded word? Not that it would matter, the FAQ has already made it very clear that changing those sub faction keywords like Chapter, Legion and Kabal to match a different faction keyword doesn't make them part of that faction (a polite way of saying "Don't even try it you cheesy little git.").

See? That's why the <> keyword rules are too ambiguous lol.
There is no rule that says that Dark Mechanicus acts as a possible legion choice. Some units simply have the option of using the dark mechanicum keyword.
There isn't any way to interpret what the RAI here is. RAW you can only use dark mech on the knights or the hellwright.
The knights are their own faction too and have nothing to do with heretic astartes, so it seems to be it's own faction.
Same as Eyrine Cults except that those are always also <legion> faction, whereas dark mech is dark mech or bust.

So right now, there isn't really much of a dark mech faction. you have knights and a character, that's it.
There is nothing that actually spells out that Dark Mechnicum is a choice for the legion keyword unless you simply assume it is.
...Of course, conversely, there is nothing saying that The Tainted is a legion keyword either soooo, yea.
I'd say it's not but you should talk to your local group, see what they think.

Except the book explicitly just says <Legion> OR Dark Mechanicus in the keywords on the Hellwright. So Dark Mechanicus isn't exactly Legion it seems.

Plus changing <Legion> to the Dark Mech keyword doesn't make them the same. You then effectively have Legion: Dark Mech and Dark Mech.

The FAQ clears this up.

Currently there is only a couple of things that can be listed as Dark Mech.

Likely, the coming Fires of Cyraxus will have some Dark Mechanicum options for the Mechanicum toys.
