I am, simply because it sounds stupid, and I keep getting called out for being some stupid character from League. I get the copyright thing, but my god, there can't be that many other things called "Eldar".

That's just me though, thoughts?

At least Drew Carey is easy to remember, but the CWE name, I just can't seem to memorize it.

In Lord of the Rings, Eldar was one of the names the Elves went by.

In the current fluff, Eldar is the common imperial name for them but they call themselves Aeldari. I don't mind it so much. In fact, I have a harder time with Astra Militarum. That's the Guard, the end.

Nope . A name is just a name and Aeldari is almost the same anyway, and Drukhari well don't really care.

I'm on with the change, Asurmen created the path system so it makes sense to name his followers after him as a general concept.

Not sure what prompted Drukari, but it does sound interesting phonetically and it fits with other Aeldari nomenclature as well. Space elves are sweet, as are most elves in fantasy. I always liked hearing what they called things in elven as opposed to gothic (or common in other sources)

I play dark eldar and I hate the name drukhari. Maybe for someone that play another army it's irrelevant, but my space elves will always be dark eldar, not DRUNKhari.

I don't like name changes, once its named its named.
Unless the faction change significantly that it warrants a new name. For example like primaris marines.

First, I have no idea which league character they could be talking about. "Draven" maybe, but that's only got two letters in common and sounds nothing like Drukhari.

Secondly, the dark eldar went from "Eldanith Ynneas" to "Drukhari" so in my eyes we actually gained some say-ability. I also never particularly liked "Dark Eldar", just made us sound like a second fiddle to the less important army. Is it the best name? Eh. Not really. But it's better than some of the crap GW has been naming recently.

I think it's silly and I've not once uttered the word "Aeldari" etc...so no, I won't be using them. I also don't use Astra Militarum...

It doesn't impact me. Honestly I've yet to hear a single person use these terms in real life. So, stupid? Yes. Big deal? Nah.

While I'm fairly neutral on it (I don't mind it but equally I wasn't really clamouring for it), it does explicitly address one question that comes up on 'ask about the background' pages occasionally; viz, how do the various Space Elves relate to each other. And here's a concrete answer, rather than (admittedly very heavily made) implications. They are all Aeldari. They have differing philosophies (hence the sub-factions) and overt disagreements (when my Asuryani take on a friend's Drukhari), but when push comes to shove, they have a similar cultural base and can work together more-or-less easily, at least in a (comparatively) short-term conflict. Its not as sharp a split as the old High/Dark Elf one.

My problem is with True Eldar being called Dark Eldar...

The "Dark" Eldar aren't Dark! They are the True Eldar that follow how their ancestors lived before the Great Fall and the Birth of Slaanesh!

They should be called only "Eldar"!

THATs something that irritates me much more than Aeldari or Drukhari.

Meh. Regarding the change, GW wants to have a copyright-able name for each of its factions, which is perfectly fine from a business perspective. I have no issues with cominf up with the new names.

As for Aeldari, it's okay. I think I prefer it to Eldar, as it seems more mystical and alien in its pronunciation. It also works as a name to refer to all the flavors of Eldar.

Drukhari is all right with me; I was a big fan of Whose Line Is It Anyways?.

I think it's dumb, but I'm certainly not actually angry at it. At least they don't sound as stupid as 'Astra Militarum.'

Just like the previous name changes, it does nothing other than serve to convince someone at GW that their concepts are more unique than they are. It's a little annoying but not surprising at this point.

Hate to burst that bubble, but AE is traditionally prounounced... just like an e. (just like daemon, in fact). So the shiny new name for eldar is eldar-y.

As for copyrightable... eh. Don't matter. In fact, it gives people who make bits 'for popular heroic 28mm space elves' more room to say 'Oh, I didn't know GW made that sort of thing any more. We're doing traditional fantasy elves in space, not anything anyone has a copyright on.' And no one who actually buys that sort of thing is even the slightest bit confused.

I am not as annoyed by all those name changes, as others will be by me. With stuff like this I tend to 'make up my own pronounciation'. So, for example, I might pronounce Drukhari as something like "DROOK - harry, stressing the first syllable.

Then I realized that it didn't really matter and went on with my life.

AE is not pronounced E traditionally, or in a lot of modern English. Including BrE, which is the language the game is written in. It is somewhere in between a and e, closer to A umlaut in German than it is to E in English. AE used to be a compound letter in English, which has fallen out of use, but only fairly recently. AE to E equivalence is a very recent phenomenon and more focussed in North America, although even there the difference was recognised only a century ago. Some British English speakers are starting to take up this equivalence too, but it is not as common. I have no idea about AuE or NzE, maybe someone from that part of the world could chime in. Just a comment as I find linguistics fascinating.

The beautifull part is that English has no cohesive pronounciation rules, so everything goes if you make up a new word.

edit: The same is not true for the written word.

I want to hate you, but I'm too busy laughing and wondering why I didn't see it earlier.

Should invest in a t-shirt with his face on it when I get my Wych Cult done.

Otherwise, I'm mostly sligthly annoyed at the change. Aeldari is close enough I suppose, yet there was an alternative name already avaliable. Asuryani makes sense due to Asurmen's influence on the Craftworlds and I quite like it because of it. Do feel something like "Commorite" that's connected to the pre-existing lore for DE rather than something drawn from the hat or late night binge watching Drew Carey Show would've made a better official name.

In the end they're still the same: Space Elves, Clown Elves, R-18 Elves and Dino Riding Elves.

I'm not a fan.
Aeldari I kind of get, because that does at least sound like Eldar with an I attached to it. Its not great, but I can see the connection at least.

Drukhari just sounds weird and doesn't fit at all, and for some reason I keep imagining a bunch of bespectacled fat guys in bondage gear. Which is not a fun thought to have.
