Press Release:
Following the global success of 2014’s “Godzilla” and this year’s “Kong: Skull Island,” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.
The film, which begins principal photography today, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (“Krampus”), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films), and Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”) and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), both reprising their “Godzilla” roles; Kyle Chandler (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”); Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”); Charles Dance (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”); Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include “War Dogs” and “Godzilla,” for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”); editor Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the “X-Men” and “Hangover” films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Godzilla,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and part of the Oscar-winning team behind “Life of Pi ”).

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd.

I will be genuinely surprised if this "MonsterVerse" gets as big as the MCU. Fingers crossed, of course.

Doubt it'll be that big. Kaiju films are kind of niche, but damn a remake of that one Godzilla movie I forget the name of? I'm up for it. Rodan is has been my favorite for ages, so I hope he doesn't get taken out like a bitch XD

Mothra and Rodan are generally "good" monsters while King G is usually the ultimate evil monster. I suspect we will see Big G fight M and R before they team up against King G.

I am very interested, though I seem to be in the minority that actually liked Godzilla 2014.

Rodan has always been the Krillin to Godzilla's Goku. H'es tough, he's got heart, but he's never been world class.

Anguiras is the Yamcha.

I liked it too. Would have liked more G in it. I really liked Kong though.

I loved Godzilla.

At least the parts that Gman was in.

Yeah it could have used more G, but it was a good movie with what they had. Even the 'bland' human parts, they seemed to fit with the Japanese ones, where I could generally care less about the people and they all seem awfully acted for the most part.

Very true!

Also spot-on (assuming you mean Skull Island). We've got four big name monsters in this one. Seems like, coupled with the success of Skull Island, indicates lessons learned.

Did someone say it would, or that it should?

I liked Godzilla (2014) a lot too - though like most, thought it needed a lot more Godzilla in it.

I think they've definitely learned the lesson that G2014 and Skull Island taught them - namely, more monsters, please!

G2014 basically set up Godzilla in a 'protector' role, or at least in a "I will destroy all other Kaiju" role, to the point were he was, for some odd reason, actively avoiding harming/destroying humans.

It will be interesting to see how this will be played out in this new movie.

I hope it isn't as depressing as the one recent comic series were it was basically a post-apocalyptic setting, with humanity living in the shadows as Kaiju raged across the globe...

Did anyone else read the Mark Cerasini Godzilla novels? The ones where the biggest threat to mankind was Al Gore and his big government stifling free enterprise?

I hope the movies don't do that.

I see that Mark Cerasini wrote the 24 tie-in novels for a while. Probably a better match there.

Are there tie-in novels for this movie universe?

So far, only novelizations of the two extant films. Likely there will be a bridge or prequel novel when the next film comes out. That seems to be pretty standard these days, even for mid-profile films like the Planet of the Apes series and Independence Day. Heck, Planet of the Apes is getting a whole tie in novelverse from the looks of things.

The old Mark Cerasini books were written before Godzilla 98, apparently greenlit to build interest, and appropriated elements of both the Showa and Heisei films.

Cant be any worse than the 2014 trainwreck (hopefully).
Maybe this time they'll remember its actually ok to show/focus/develope Godzilla and not some generic human characters with a very sub par plot.....

You do realize you described most every Godzilla movie ever made besides the first one. . .

Probably. Heres hoping they break the mold with this one.

It's the classic trio that work together to defeat Gidora, so it's an acceptable more. I'll be curious to see how they introduce everyone though since the Mothra and Rodan haven't had their own modern intro movies.

Any movie with Mothra in it "needs" more Kaiju too!

Indeed. I'd consider Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster to be one of the penultimate films of the Showa era (second only to Godzilla vs Mothra, maybe with some close competition from the Mech-Godzilla films) and one of the most fondly remembered Godzilla films of all time. Ghidorah featured the classic team up of Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra and while Rodan and Mothra featured in their own films before appearing in Ghidorah I don't think there's that many people who need Mothra and Rodan explained to them who would also care so long as the film doesn't sidetrack itself too much with background info.
