All Chargers go first, then you alternate non-chargers within 1" of enemy models, starting with the player who's turn it is.

It's not that simple.
It would be your opponent's turn, so your opponent's charging units would go first.
After that, they would choose ONE unit to activate. This is the first chance that a unit that's already in combat has to act so this is the first chance to strike.
However, they could choose a different unit to activate first instead - perhaps a more important combat for him to win.
That would give you a chance to activate and strike first.
In summary: if there are no other combats going on, your opponent strikes first. If there are multiple combats, the fight phase order applies.

Is this true?
I've been playing it as charging units go first then alternating starts with the player not controlling the charging units. I've been playing this wrong?

Yeah, it's irrelevant who charged in the prior turn. Take it as a new turn and apply the sequence.
The rules expressly say all Charging units first, then alternating starting with the player whose turn it is.
