This was our first 8th edition game, and it was very last minute for the necron army and so didn’t have much time to mess around with a solid list, I basically just threw what I knew was available into a list.

Also my 10 year old son played the necrons and so I was trying to help him and play at same time, though I was wanting to give him as much decision making as possible, so there are times where necron focus may seem odd, but I saw it as a learning curve for him, a few mistakes were made here and there.

I didn’t want to overwhelm my son so even though we were playing matched gameplay rules and each army was battleforged into detachments I purposefully left out using command points for now.

We rolled for the mission and we got Maelstorm of War – Contact Lost.

Grey Knights won the roll off to place the first objective, Necrons chose Hammer and Anvil map.

Final deployment positions are in the image below

Grey knights deployed to the left:
Draigo, 2 x NDK, Terminators were all placed in reserves.
Scout squad was infiltrated on top of the fort in the middle of the board, while cent dev’s were holding an objective on top of the bridge.
Razorback took up standing behind the mine shaft with Crowe and Purifers inside.

Necrons deploying to the right:
Kept them quite close together, the plan was to try and keep them all with a 5++ against ranged shots and increase reanimation by 1 from the 2 HQs.
Wraiths were placed next to the water tower on an objective while destroyers were inside the ruins.
The ghost ark was the 2 brown “shipping crates” behind the ruins that the destroyers were in... left the ghost ark at home by accident and that was the next best thing...

Grey Knights finished deploying first, but let the Necrons to go first.

Turn 1 – Necrons
Movement
Necrons advanced up the field, Wraiths and Scarabs all advanced as had no one to charge into. HQs had no range so also advanced.
The Ghost ark moved down the far flank while the rest moved up the middle.

[b]Shooting

Primary target was the scout squad, everything that could shoot shot at the scout squad, 3 models were taken down.

C’tan tried to cast his Time’s Arrow on the scouts, anything but a 1 to cause a mortal wound... rolled a 1, kind of set the pace for Time’s Arrow in this game.

Overview

A bit of a lack luster turn for Necrons.

Turn 1 – Grey Knights
Movement
Razorback moved 12” up the board to get its cargo closer to the enemy.

Cent Dev’s held ground, Scout Squad moved up the turret to take the objective at the top, while getting a sight on a character.

As the wraiths had moved off the water tower a NDK teleported into that position, the other NDK as well as Draigo and the Terminator squad teleported onto the Necron backline trying to pick off the weak left behind.

Psychic Phase
Terminators cast Hammerhand on themselves, hoping to be able to get into combat.

Both NDK’s, Draigo and razorback smited the closest target, Draigo also cast Purge Soul on Orikan.

Draigo periled smite, rolled and 5 and suffered 3 wounds, purge soul was manifested but lost the roll off.

A wound was taken from a Wraith, tomb blade and 1 warriors died due to smite from other spells.

Shooting Phase

The NDK on the water tower lit up the Wraiths from behind with a heavy incinerator, it was devastating and wiped out the whole unit scoring first blood.

The other NDK’s flamer must of malfunctioned while hitting the ground after teleporting onto the battlefield as it only caused 1 hit which failed to wound against the warriors.

Draigo and the Terminators aimed all storm bolters at the warriors, 24 shots all being able to re-roll. In total 6 warriors fell.

Heavy Bolters from the razorback just bounced off nearby walls as each bullet missed their target, while the scouts must still be in shock from losing 3 comrades as both sniper shots whizzed past Orikan.

The Cent Dev’s opened their lascannons onto the triarch stalker, some devastating hits, in total 12 damage was dealt to the stalker and the stalker was removed from play.
Big mistake on my part I completely forgot about quantum shielding where the damage would most likely of been avoided.

Combat Phase
Terminators and Draigo declared a charge against the warriors, overwatch came in and took of a terminator wound, the shots must of done their job as they failed to get into combat.

The NDK on the back line declared a charge against Orikan, as he had no ranged weapon no overwatch could be made, determination saw the charge successful where 4 devastating sword swipes took chunks from the cowering Necron HQ, total damage of 19 was dealt to the Necrons warlord completely removing him from play.
The NDK consolidated forward determined for more blood engaging the left over warriors. The warriors hit back seeing their leader being removed from the battlefield so swiftly, unfortunately their attacks just bouncing off the NDK’s armoured legs.

Overview

It was quite a successful Grey Knight turn, apart from the mistake with the stalker (didn’t realise until turn 3 when I attacked the ghost ark)
First Blood, Slay the Warlord all achieved.

Turn 2 - Necrons
Movement
The Scarabs moved up onto the fort ready to engage with the left over scouts.

The rest of the army regrouped and poised themselves to target the cent Dev’s after seeing the devastation of the attacks they can throw out.

C’tan moved towards the backline to provide support for what was approaching.

Ghost Ark spun around and headed towards the middle to provide extra support where needed.

Reanimation kicked in and 2 warriors were dragged out of the pile of rubble ready to engage into the NDK.

Shooting

C’tan targeted his Times’s Arrow at the Terminator Squad, this time anything higher than a 2 needed to inflict a wound... rolled a 2.

C’tan determined to help shot his gaze towards the terminators causing sheer devastation and inflicting 3 wounds, 2 damage each, 3 Terminators removed from play.

The rest of the army turned towards the cent Dev’s, gauss flying left and right, yet somehow each bullet was dodged or saved bouncing straight off their tough exteriors.
The devastators launched their barrage of shots, this time 2 damage inflicted taking the front cent Dev down to 1 wound remaining.

Tomb blades focused onto the razorback inflicting 2 wounds.

Combat
Scarabs charged into the scouts, snipers missed wildly. The scarabs pummelled all 12 attacks into the shocked scouts completely removing them from the board.

They consolidated in victory towards their next target.

C’tan happy with the devastation caused to the Terminators turned to the NDK that was poised ready to strike the warriors into more rubble, a successful charge was made and the C’tan let rip, sheer devastation was caused and 9 damage was dealt in 4 swift attacks.

The warriors were determination from seeing sparks shooting from the dismantling NDK raised their guns and piled attacks in, an extra wound was removed leaving the NDK sitting with 2 wounds remaining.

The NDK shook himself, tightened his grip on his sword and turned to the C’tan ready to return some blows, hes not going down without a fight.
2 attacks piled in, but only 1 was successful as the controller struggled to keep the large machine working, 2 damage was dealt back to the C’tan.

Overview

Quite a good turn this time for the Necrons, some damage dealt to the Terminators hopefully stopping them in their tracks, the NDK very close to death, and causing some damage on the Cent Dev’s while removing the sniper threats.

Turn 2 – Grey Knights
Movement
Crowe and the Purifiers had enough seeing the necrons causing death around them, they hauled themselves from the razorback and ran forwards, Crowe positioned himself in front of the tomb blades, which the purifiers moved forwards towards the Immortals

The NDK next to the water tower moved towards the back of the Cryptek and the destroyers trying to surround what forces the Necrons had.

The Terminators hobbled over towards the water tower to secure that objective.

Draigo moved towards C’tan to help his wounded NDK defeat the worthy foe.

Psychic

Terminators successfully casted hammerhand onto draigo.

Draigo and the NDK hit the C’tan with smite removing 2 more wounds.

Crowe positioned perfectly channelled his power and manifested smite onto the nearby Tomb Blades, 5 devastating mortal wounds broke them into small pieces.

The purifiers seeing their fellow captain and chief manifest his power so well channelled to attack the immortals, clearly with not enough practice handling the warp they failed to manifest.

Shooting
Purifiers raised their 2 incinerators and fired them into the destroyers, 12 attacks caused a good 7 wounds, however the destroyers with the tough exteriors shrugged off the attacks and only 2 damage was caused removing an already wounded destroyer.
Their storm bolters didn’t manage to cause any extra damage.

Crowe, Terminators and the razorbacks Heavy bolters all tried to help take down the immortals, but only managed to take out 3.

The NDK must of ran out of fuel in his incinerator as only 1 attack was made against the Cryptek, but this just attack just went up in smoke causing no damage.

I completely forgot to shoot anything with my cent Dev’s... maybe thats just Karma for wrongfully killing the stalker.

Combat

Queue the dice gods...
Draigo made his charge into combat with the C’tan – double 1... so just.

Crowe had no one to charge as he wiped out the tomb blades in previous phases.

Purifiers poised themselves to charge the immortals – double 1, didn’t make it as immortals were removed from incinerators.

The full strength NDK declared a charge against the Cryptek.. rolled a 3... so was left standing froze in place.

Draigo confident that he will kill C’tan who only had 3 wounds left threw 1 attack at the C’tan the other 4 into the warriors.
Rolled a 1, re-rolled a 1... C’tan survives.
Attacks the warriors and kills 4.

The NDK hit at the C’tan, but even with the re-rolling to hits failed to hit any attacks.

C’tan went next, thinking that he would be better attacking draigo, made 3 successful wounds, but draigo dived beneath his shield and all 3 bounced off causing no damage.

The Warriors didn’t manage to cause any damage on the NDK.

Overview
Not a bad phase, some very unlucky rolls, but still a good amount of damage from the grey knights. If Crowe gets close enough he seems pretty strong, along with the potential from purifiers.

Turn 3 - Necrons
Movement

Warriors disembarked from the ghost ark, the ghost ark moved up to the engaged warriors with the NDK.

Newly disembarked warriors, Destroyers and immortals grouped around the remaining Cryptek to gain benefit from his auras.

Scarabs moved down towards the cent Dev’s.

Reanimation was cast on the engaged warriors with the NDK, 2 was restored, while the ghost ark enabled them to re-cast reanimation to gain another 2 warriors.

Immortals with help with the cryptek buff gained 2 more, while destroyers failed to return any killed models back.

Shooting
Destroyers opened onto the cent dev’s again, they finished off the wounded guy and removed 1 wound from someone else.
The immortals and warriors managed to kill off all the purifiers.

Combat

C’tan went first and attacked the NDK with everything, causing enough to remove him from play.

Draigo went next and finished off the C’tan with 2 attacks, the other 3 attacks went into the warriors taking out 2.

The warriors tried to fight back, however no damage was dealt.

Overview
Necrons are slowly losing numbers and are now struggling to deal with the high armor that the Grey Knights have.

Turn 3 – Grey Knights
Movement

Razorback moved back into deployment zone to help secure an objective.

Crowe moved forward towards the warriors and immortals, NDK moved forward towards warriors.

Terminators moved Over the pipes and towards the middle of the board.

Psychic
Terminators cast smite on the warriors engaged with Draigo, so did Draigo taking out 2 more.

Crowe was not in range to cast smite.

Other NDK tried to manifest Gate onto the terminators to send them back to the deployment zone to help secure an objective and help take out scarabs before getting to cent dev’s, however he failed to cast.

Shooting
NDK incinerated the warriors taking out 3, storm bolters were shot from remaining models, but did not do much.

Cent Dev shot lascannons into destroyers which removed 2 of them, leaving 1 left. Hurricane bolters shot into immortals which removed a couple of models.

Combat

Crowe charged into the immortals, NDK charged into remaining destroyer and warriors.

Draigo managed to kill the remaining warriors in the necrons deployment zone and consolidated towards the ghost ark.

Crowe killed all the immortals with his devastating sword causing 8 wounds.

The NDK killed the remaining destroyer.

Overview
A great turn from the grey knights taking out a lot of the remaining threat.

Turn 4
Necrons carried on trying to take down targets but with so few models left they struggled, the Grey Knights ended up finishing off the remaining models on the board removing the last necrons at the end of turn 4.

Final Overview
It was a great game overall and I felt that 8th has smoothed out the game flow a lot.

I find the psychic phase quite stale and plain, not many options to do (especially for grey knights), and you just end up spamming smite because you have no other option.

There were a few mistakes, and I am sure the necrons tactics could of been a lot better at times, but it was a great learning curve for my son.

He really enjoyed it and in comparison to 7th he says its easier to learn and play.

Its a long report, but I wanted to get some detail down while I remembered.

I hope you enjoyed it.
