New Primaris Space Marines and Death Guard Announced

Hot off the heels of Dark Imperium there’s even more Death Guard and Primaris Space Marines landing soon. The releases begin next week with two new champions of humanity, and then in July an array of Getting Started products, making it easier than ever to get involved in the 41st Millennium.

[...]

In July, both the Primaris Space Marines and the Death Guard are getting new units, starting with the Reivers of the Adeptus Astartes. Many of these Getting Started kits will be in the Easy to Build format, meaning they’ll be easy to assemble – they’re made of coloured plastic and you won’t even need glue. There are also two new Getting Started boxes and a Getting Started with Warhammer 40,000 book coming soon, giving you a range of options for beginning your journey in the 41st Millennium.

Our first Easy to Build kit of the new edition features the Reivers. These guys are the guerilla specialists of the Primaris Space Marines, and their miniatures have a threatening, predatory feel. In contrast to the stalwart Intercessors, the Reivers appear to be advancing forwards, equipped with suppressed bolt pistols and brutal-looking combat blades.

Stripped down Mk X armour allows for a good look at how this newest mark of Space Marine armour functions, with the midsection of the models showing thick bundles of fibrous cabling; this is the mechanical muscle that lets the Reivers punch through concrete, sprint in full plate and leap through ruins and jungles. Finally, each Reiver wears the visage of a leering skull – these guys aren’t just about stealth, but terror. Even if you’ve already got an Imperial army, Reivers will make a great addition to your force, and there are rules in the box to let you start adding them to your games straight away.

The Plague Marines Easy to Build offer features models as varied and as finely detailed as those found in the Dark Imperium box, bloated bodies all but spilling from rusting, ancient power armour. The Plague Champion is particularly grotesque and is one of the first Death Guard miniatures to go completely bare-headed, giving us a glimpse at what little remains of his humanity. The blight launcher in the kit is a great visual reference to the history of the Death Guard, and eagle-eyed hobbyists will notice the similarities to weapons from the Horus Heresy, blending design elements from the grenade launchers wielded by the Deathshroud Terminators and the rad-missile launchers equipped by Destroyers. It’s a great way to tie the Death Guard to their historical roots and an indication of the horrific weapons they bring to bear in the reaping to come. Whether you’re bolstering your forces from Dark Imperium or starting your own Vectorum, this Easy to Build kit is a great way to do it.

Finally, you’ll be able to bolster your plague-ridden hordes with Easy to Build Poxwalkers. Like their unfortunate compatriots in Dark Imperium, these miniatures are ridden with all manner of horrific diseases and go to battle wielding the last vestiges of their personal lives as improvised weapons. Poxwalkers make for a powerful choice in any Chaos Army and, thanks to their Diseased Horde rule, we imagine you’ll have quite a few of them, so these designs are a great way to add variety and character to a unit. Whether you’re yet to take your first steps into Warhammer 40,000 and are looking for the easiest way to start a new collection or you’re already looking for ways to bolster your armies from Dark Imperium, it’s going to be an exciting few weeks of new releases.

These products will be released alongside our new ways to get started. The first of these is our Getting Started with Warhammer 40,000 handbook – this 103-page guidebook is the perfect guide for any Warhammer 40,000 beginner, giving a thorough overview of the universe of the 41st Millennium, how the game works and the different armies you can collect. It also comes with an Easy to Build Intercessor and a set of core rules, allowing you to take the first steps of your journey for around the price of a White Dwarf.

First Strike, on the other hand, is a great boxed set for both new and experienced players of Warhammer 40,000. For new players, there’s everything you need in the box to start playing, including miniatures, rules, and a guidebook taking you through a series of handy scenarios to teach you to play. There’s a double-sided gaming mat in the box, and it’s printed so that it doubles as a set of cardboard Munitorum Armoured Containers – meaning you’ll have somewhere to play your first few games. The box itself contains all our new Easy to Build miniatures, but for almost half the price you’d pay if you got them all separately – it’s a great way to get your hands on all the new releases in one place! There’s also a pocket-sized Battle Primer that’ll be helpful for you whether you’re playing your first few games or you’re a seasoned veteran in need of a quick-reference guide.

Finally, Know No Fear is great for players looking to make a comprehensive start, containing full armies for the Death Guard and the Primaris Space Marines. As well as getting a Patrol Detachment’s worth of miniatures for each side, you’ll get rules, your guide to getting started, a gaming mat and card scenery – all for nearly half the price of Dark Imperium. Combined with the Easy to Build kits, you’ll be able to assemble a diverse and powerful force of Death Guard or Primaris Space Marines in no time.

You can expect to see the Primaris Librarian and Primaris Captain available for pre-order next weekend, while the new Getting Started products will be available shortly after that. For those of you who want to get involved with the complete Warhammer 40,000 experience, Dark Imperium contains two full armies of miniatures alongside the complete rulebook, which features detailed background and advanced rules – get yours now in store or online.

As someone who hasn't bought dark imperium yet i'm now torn on what to buy.

I like the look of the small starter with the new sculpts. I might get that and play a couple rounds with my friends who don't do tabletop gaming. Hopefully the units are balanced well enough against each other though. Odd thing is the kit doesn't look like it contains full units. 5 poxwalkers, 3 intercessors? I guess it doesn't change how you play too much, it's just like starting the match having taken losses.

I'm amazed that the snap fits are entirely new sculpts, even the poxwalkers. I'll have to get that box.

I hope one of these has a proper mini rulebook too (with the matched play stuff and scenarios) so we don't have to lug around the hardback.

Maybe the scenarios will help with it.

I'm actually quite tempted to buy a few of these mats on ebay as they look good and glueing them to some MDF boards would make for a cheap and conveniently transport- and storeable skirmish table.

Those are pretty darn good offerings. Too bad I feel like the Nurgle stuff is too cartoony and don't like how the Primaris make regular marines look small. A good value, just not my preferences.

effectivly yes, although I suspect they're gonna play more like Sicarian infiltrators then scout marines.

Curious how they'll get the points for the Reivers out.

I am confused by this. Why wasn't this released alongside Dark Imperium?

Why snap fits models now?

Why not just multi part kits?

I am happy to buy these.
I like additional poses and I appreciate the easier to build stuff. I know the artsy Golden Demon models are a big part of their sales but I appreciate that they recognize that some of us see the models as game pieces.

I see a lot more single-pose kits coming for the future of 40K. It seems a lot of AOS kits are that style, right?

The First Strike set reminds me somewhat of the smaller AoS boxed set I picked up - with a few extras.

Really like the idea of the Know No Fear set - I'm guessing it will be priced at $80 US like the Sigmar set. If I were to start a Primaris army, I think that is the set I'd aim for. It looks like it will have essentially a softbound rulebook, and after selling off the unwanted Nurgle minis, it'd come out to $30-$40 US. Not too shabby for 14 GW Primaris minis + rules and basic playmat.

It never ends well

Just to be clear:

Are there any Power Armour Death Guard miniatures from that teaser video that have yet to appear? Want to be sure that some of the "multi-part" ones we saw weren't actually just one of these new three.

Why does a single game need so many starters? What store is going to stock all of these? And if they're going to stock only one, which one to choose?

Who says there aren't multi-part kits for Reivers or Death Guard on the way?

I think the idea is that they want to put out some "Easy to Build" stuff so that people who are starting Primaris and Death Guard can build up forces quick to participate in the summer campaign thing.

Because some people might balk at the $160 price tag of Dark Imperium?

Having what might be similar to the Age of Sigmar pricing for "starters"(Storm of Sigmar, the big AoS starter, and the newly released Thunder and Blood) gives you a $33 box, a $80 box, and a $125 box.

In all honesty, I can't see many stores that are seeing a resurgence of 40k turning down these down. Storm of Sigmar was basically the size of a normal infantry box and Thunder and Blood is the same size as an Imperial Knight box so shelf space isn't going to be a huge issue all told..

^This. Seriously, they're so many other armies out there that need attention right now. Do we really need not 1...not 2...but 3 starter sets for more space marines? I get it, the primaris marines are new & we should all be excited. That said, we have armies with 20+ year old models. Maybe...just maybe release models for the armies that people have been waiting 2 decades for?

This was the argument for Age of Sigmar.

The answer is the same:

Answers to a few questions.
The minis in the first strike set are snap fit minis, the ones in know no fear are the same as dark imperium just with coloured plastic.
There are still marine minis shown in the teaser video for deathguard that have not been released.
The big box is for the core ( essentially anyone who reads this forum)
The cheaper box is for the price conscious, and the lapsed player.
The mini box is for kids and beginners.
As to why they are doing this the life blood of 40k is new players.
There is lot of positive buzz around 8th and a fair bit of coverage in the wider media. This is a smart way of maintaining momementum. I would hope that they try to get the two cheaper boxes into toy shops and the like.

As for other armies I wouldn't hold you breath. The second half of July will probably be aos Ghb2. August and September will feature the deathguard and primaris codexes and probably a campaign book alongside Mortarion. We still have Shadespire and shadow Aelves to come this year.
My guess is that we will see at most 2 further 40k armies getting releases this year. If I was a betting man, I would say admech and orks.

Admittedly, if the watered down version were on order at the same time as the $160 box, I would've bought the watered down version hands down. I'm a little peeved at that but I kinda knew it might happen this way.

I'm still putting together the minis from the bigger box and reading the rules. I was more peeved to see that the traditional starter scenarios and quick reference cards were absent. Seeing them surface in another product kinda feels like they're milking the release a bit.. though at the same time, I don't know that I really need that opening scenario.. but on general principle it seems weird to remove it like that and have it split out.

I like the idea of Orks being this year.. especially if it means a buggy/trakk kit at long last.. and if the codex holds the return of missing units..

Didn't see the "... won't even need glue." part of that. My bad.

I presume then that the snapfit ones are the new ones then, not the redo's (in colour!) of the ones in the Dark Imperium box.

Just out of interest - anyone any experiance of painting the models made of coloured plastic (e.g. the ones in old getting started boxes)?

Does the colour of the base plastic tint the base coat you put on top (I guess not with chaos black)

I just really hope they will release the Reivers seperately. The wording makes it unsure I think. I will probably try to get an answer from GW regarding this, as I am not keen on splitting too many boxes with other people, and I think I will need quite a few Reivers, they are stunning models.

The wording I am referecing is just after the part where they describe the three new kits (Reivers, Death Guard and Pox walkers), where it says:

"These products will be released alongside our new ways to get started."

This could mean that they will get their own releases, in separate boxes, alongside those new getting started boxes.

EDIT: Just read this part about the First Strike box, and I do think they will get released separately. Don't know where I got that they wouldn't be released separately from..
The box itself contains all our new Easy to Build miniatures, but for almost half the price you’d pay if you got them all separately
