(The beginning of this post is the same as my introduction).

Hi everyone I'm new to both the forum and Warhammer*.

*I used to collect Warhammer; 40K, fantasy and LOTR when I was young but only to build and paint casually and I didn't have a specific army but no longer have any of my collection.

I have been planning on getting back into it, to both model and play and I'm trying to plan what I will start with so that I can get some of the basics around Christmas time.

I was looking at the start collecting boxes as they seem good value. I did see a box which doesn't appear to be available in the UK anymore unless bought on ebay for a higher price which is the "Battleforce: Space Wolves Ironclaw Strike Force" which seemed great value for money at RRP so it's a shame it seems to be over priced now.

I know I will need to get the rule book and codex and will probably just start with the start collecting box but does anyone know of any other good value box sets that would be worth looking at or have any advice starting out with this particular army?

Another thing I'm not sure of, I've been browsing through the space wolves codex and I was reading through all the options re swapping out armour and weapons and adding units etc. After having a look I realised you would really need to know what options you wanted before buying and building your models as you don't want to give them the wrong weapons and have to change them or buy new models. How on earth do you plan this being new to the game?

Looks like there are so many options and so much history to the game that it's kind of overwhelming trying to get to grips with an army.

thanks in advance.

Do you know that we just got a new edition and Codex: Space Wolves is not valid anymore?
SW rules are currently found in this book:
https://www.games-workshop.com/de-DE/Index-imperium-vol-1-eng-2017

Start Collecting box is always good, and there is another box with 10 Grey Hunters and a Drop Pod. But as Drop Pods are not that important anymore, I wouldn't recommend it.

I was lucky with the Iron Claw Strike Force. It was only available last christmas season, but I couldn't get one. A few weeks ago I got an email from my favorit online retailer that he had 1 in stock again for 20% off

In the new edition, all choices seem to be decent, so you can't do too much wrong with buying the models you like.

I would advise against buying the Longfangs and Skyclaw boxes though. I would rather buy normal Space Marine Devastators and Assault Troops instead and mix the kit with SW bits. You get way more weapon options that way.

Space Wolves have always been an army that supported a high degree of customisation. Figuring out optimal builds take time and when is optimal in one edition may not be optimal in the next.

One solution is not too worry too much and build what you think looks cool as long as it is legal. If you want something more specific, here are some hints I have deduced so far.

Small squads seem to be better than big squads for Marines in 8th edition due to the effect of Battleshock. Plasma weapons and Assault cannons are looking good as all-round weapons. Based on this I would say that a couple of 5-6 man Grey Hunter squads riding in Razorbacks with assault cannon turrets would be a good start. Give the Hunters a plasma gun, a plasma pistol and the power axe for the pack leader. Now you have a squad with respectable firepower that can also handle itself in melee.

Next you will need a leader. Either a Wolf Lord or Bjorn the Fell-handed would be a good choice. Their special rules allow you to reroll 1s to hit meaning your nearby squads can overcharge their plasma weapons for very little risk giving them enough power the threaten all but the heaviest tanks.

Thunderwolves are not quite as powerful as in the last edition but are still a great unit that move fast and pack a punch in assault. Probably 5-6 is a good squad size. Give 2 power swords, 2 chainswords and 2 Thunder hammers and storm shields. They can take on anything from monsters to hordes.

Long Fangs are great with their concentrated fire rule. If you are willing to get some extra guns and specialise, 5 Plasma cannons will be devastating as they can use their own rule to reroll 1s, even when away from your general. This means your plasma cannons are much less likely to overheat. Alternatively, if you want to stick with what comes in the box, 2 plasma cannons for general work and 2 lascannons for anti-tank would be pretty good.

Wulfen make a great force-multiplier for your assault units. You can use them to support your Thunderwolves as well as any other CC units you get in the future.

Assuming you start with the "Start collecting Space Wolves" box, that gives you a small Thunderwolf unit and enough infantry to give you a couple of small Grey Hunter packs and a Lord/Battleleader to lead them. That is enough to get you started with a minimum sized Patrol detachment. I would then add the following in whichever order you prefer:

Long Fangs for heavy fire support. (Ragnar69 is right to suggest SM Devastators and then decorate them with left over wolfy bits from your Grey Hunters).
2 Razorbacks to transport your squads. Get the Assault cannon turrets from forgeworld as they are worth it.
Another unit of Thunderwolves to reinforce the existing squad.
Wulfen to support the Thunderwolves.
A Dreanought.

After that you can start thinking about more tanks and possibly units like Blood Claws and Wolf Guard. I hope I have given you some ideas without drowning you.

Thanks I was aware that was a new edition but didn't realise exactly how that works so I will have a look at the link you gave. I think I may set some stock alerts up for the iron claw strike force.

Thanks for the info I was trying to understand if you could just buy SM tanks etc. and use SW bits so you've answered that for me .

Thanks a lot, this is a lot of useful information to start with. I feel like starting off with the start collecting box and the book and then maybe playing a few times to get used to the rules and building up my army slowly will work out the best. I definitely wanted the dreadnought so I will get that at some point as you mentioned.

Also I think that not knowing anything about the rules really means it's hard for me to know what is a good use of points/ good value so probably good to start small play a few times then build up.

two sets of Space Marine Jump Packs from GW's bitz order and a box of Grey Hunters will yield you the same amount of Skyclaws for about 25% less than the price of two Skyclaw boxes(one of the great things about SWs is that the base kit comes with pistols and chainswords, unlike tactical marines).

However in terms of longfangs, a box of longfangs is still better value than the devastator marines simply because I don't think SWs have access to Grav cannons and the Long Fangs box costs overall less and still gives you plenty of extra weapons to outfit a second squad if you buy another Grey Hunters box.

EDIT: If you really want some bang for your buck, the Blood Claws box from GW's direct order is the cheapest way to bulk out your wolves. It's the same sprue as Grey Hunters and Wolf Guards, but comes with 20(!) wolves. That's twice the amount of wolves than the Wolf Guard set for the same price, and 1.5% more wolves than the Grey Hunters (again, all of them have the same sprue so it's literally the same thing). Throw in a box of long fangs and some jump packs and you can basically make all the footsloging wolves you'll ever need.

Er. I made a slight reading error

The Blood Claws pack comes with 15 Minis, not 20. Price per model, that's basically identical to the Grey Hunters pack, so IGNORE EVERYTHING I SAID ABOUT THAT.

Sorry.

I would recommend magnetizing your models to let you change out weapon loadouts. This way you can switch out a melta for a plasma or flamer etc without having to have multiple models.

This is especially useful for vehicles like dreadnoughts and characters like wolf lords, or units like TWC where you might want to change their load outs on a game to game basis.

The ability to swap weapons is a good one. Dreadnoughts are easy enough even without magnets as the arms can just push-fit without glue.

For other models, it depends how confident you are at modelling.

Another place you can potentially source cheap miniatures are the boxed games, particularly "Burning of Prospero" and "Dark Millenium". These sets usually represent quite a saving over conventional squads.

However they are only a bargain if you can find someone else to buy the other half of the box with (Thousand Sons Chaos Marines for Prospero and Nurgle Deathguard in Dark Millenium).

The infantry in Prospero are Marines in old Mk3 Iron armour and are not as "wolfy" as current models (although you can wolfy them up with extra bits from your sprues if you want). You also get some units like Custodians and Sisters of silence that you can ally in if you want.

Dark Millenium contains new "Primaris Marines". These are not particularly wolfy and are not so easy to convert but are still usable in a Space Wolf army and the box set contains the new 8th edition rulebook so may be worth considering.

Betrayal at Calth (if you can find it) has much better savings than anything else, especially since you can use all of the models in it. The only problem is that it's more suited to vanilla marines due to the lack of weapon options, so at least one box of SWs is recommended to get some gear (the main issue is that you lack a lot of CCWs for arming your wolves, which is one of their main perks).

Burning of Prospero's only real perk is that it comes with a SW special character, but you can easily make a comparable one with the standard SW box and an extra mini.

I'd honestly not realised this was even a thing. I'd seen things about magnetising and assumed it was to the board or something. This seems like a great idea!!! thanks!!

Thanks, this is definitely the sort of thing I was looking for. I don't mind putting some work into making them look more wolfy and getting extra parts. I found some really cheap options for a SW upgrade pack on Amazon but buying bulk amounts of figures through ways like this will definitely help.

Thanks I'm definitely going to look at these packs as I think I would enjoy the modelling and having to make my army more SW myself.

Not sure if anyone can help. I've been using the info above to plan my starting army and one thing I've pretty much decided on is getting the dark imperium box set as I can see basically all the space marine models can be used as space wolves. My only concern is this guy quoted in the box as "Primaris Space Marine Captain, resplendent in cloak and iron halo, holding aloft a master-crafted power sword in one hand and wielding a boltstorm gauntlet on the other;" in the index it says you can use captains from space marines with the space wolves faction but I don't know if this is somethinga bit different? Also would I need to physically alter him a lot for him to fit?

You can use him. He is 'Captain In Gravis Armour', rules are on page 13. You don't need to alter him, though you can easily make him more wolfy with wolf bits. A Space Wolf head and some of those wolf tail bits would do the trick. He has no weapon options, he always has the sword and the bolter-fist, so don't change his weapons, unless you change them into similar type of weapons (i.e. replace the sword with a sword from the Space Wolf kit.)

Space Wolves player who isn't overly fond of the Space Wolves' model kits, too much "wolfity-wolf" not enough "vikings in space".

For the box set my money goes to Burning of Prospero. The only models truly no good to you are the Ahriman and the Sisters of Silence but they make great trading pieces to get vehicles and other vanilla bits and pieces like Bikes or just sell outright. You'll get Griegor Fell-Hand who is a 30k Bjorn the Fell-Handed or Lukas the Trickter proxie, five Custodes who you can trade off or turn into Terminators, thirty Heresy Mk marines and a heap of chainswords that don't have hands and arms attached to them, really good for giving your Grey Hunters a more organised look with Bolter in hands and holstered Bolt Pistol and Chainsword.

In my opinion a single 10 model Wolf Pack Box will give you all the Wolfity Wolf you need to cover the entire Prospero box after assembling the Wolf Pack.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Thanks. I actually did look at this but I was concerned at the armour being 30k and wasn't sure that this would be ok in a 40k army.

it's TOTALLY ok, mk 3 plate is still used in modern 40k. go right ahead and use it. you can also use the sisters of silence and custodes, they're not space wovles but should plug right in, that may not be ideal once you have a codex depending on how it works (we'll know more later) but right now it's fine. so the entire box nets you 3 10 man grey hunter squads, a wolf lord, and some pretty awesome imperial specialist troops.

the sorcrer you can I dunno, give to a friend who plays chaos?

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

it's TOTALLY ok, mk 3 plate is still used in modern 40k. go right ahead and use it. you can also use the sisters of silence and custodes, they're not space wovles but should plug right in, that may not be ideal once you have a codex depending on how it works (we'll know more later) but right now it's fine. so the entire box nets you 3 10 man grey hunter squads, a wolf lord, and some pretty awesome imperial specialist troops.

the sorcrer you can I dunno, give to a friend who plays chaos?
hmm... I'll maybe need to give it another look.

I definatly think the calth or propsero boxes are a good place to start for an army. (Calath I tend to think is better if you're playing vanilla Marines)

Well, cavalry is in a bad shape right now, too expensive, too slow and damage output was highly nerfed.

Better stick with bikes either for shooting (shield+stormbolter) or melee (shield+axe/hammer).

It will be hard for character to participate in fight due he is not a part of unit anymore (and you still has to get btb with enemy). So better give your characters jet packs (to be able to move through units and objects and be able to go in reserve).

Long fangs are awesome, but need a cheap screen, either 5-man gray hanters with plasmagun, or even cheaper bloodclaws.

Both the mark 4 and mark 3 sprues contain enough sheathed swords to give one to every power armoured Marine; no shortage of close combat weapons.

Also, the Space Wolves Pack (10 models, £2.30 per model) contains the same sprues as the Space Wolves Wolf Guard (5 models £3/model) and Space Wolves Blood Claws (15 models, £2/model); the latter two are Webstore Exclusives, but you don't get anything different other than a bulk saving. the Space Wolves Wolf guard set plus the Space marines Jump Packs set is less than a Skyclaws set, though (£15 + £5, rather than £22.50), for what appears to be identical parts.

the Space Wolves sprues also contain replacement heads and arms for Scouts, so you can make Space Wolves Scouts.

At the moment, Space Wolves appear to be cheaper than regular Space Marines, but if that changes, you don't need to use the actual Space Wolves models - just paint any Space Marine grey.

I am new to the space Wolves also thinking about a list like below;

Any tips or ideas before I invest in some models?

If I were starting a new marine army at this point (and I am) I would definitely get Primaris (i.e. the Dark Imperium box) instead of old marines. Even though some people don't want to believe it, the Primaris are the way of the future.

They are overpriced for what they do, codex may fix it but right now taking them is the worst option you get two and a half tac marines for one primeris.

But you have to like the miniatures. I think primaris are silly and too big. Don't know about their stats, never read their profiles and I haven't faced them yet but I hate how they look and I'm not going to buy them even if they remain the only SM army in a few years. If someone likes SW I'd suggest to go with SW units, not SM ones. Unless he/she likes them both.

Right. But the OP had expressed interest in the Dark Imperium, so I assume they're OK with how the Primaris look. (Personally I think they're the best looking marines ever!) And they're in the SW units list so they're Space Wolf units and can easily be converted to look more wolfy.

But yeah, you're right that ultimately it is the best to get whatever models one personally likes the best.

Thanks both for the in put. Honestly I love the way the new primaris SM look and I'd like to be reasonably up to date with the miniatures. I like both SW and SM . I just prefer the style/ colour scheme and lore of the space wolves. I plan on hashing a mix of SM made to match the style of the SW and actual SW.

There's only three instances I wouldn't suggest the Prospero box and a Wolf Pack kit over just about any other starting point for Space Wolves.
1. You want Space Marines and a rulebook.
2. You know someone who wants the Chaos and a rulebook and is willing to cough up for more than half of the box.
3. Question Schnedicles, what are your skills with a Stanley Knife like?

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

personally I'm of the opinion that Hybrid lists are likely to be the way to go for a forseeable time
