Spoiler:

Forget the NES Classic—this is the vintage system we’ve been waiting for. Nintendo today announced the Super Nintendo Classic, which will be out on September 29 for $80 and include 21 games including the previously unreleased Star Fox 2.

The lineup, which is excellent, also includes Earthbound, Final Fantasy III, Link to the Past, and Secret of Mana. And Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country and holy crap this thing is going to be impossible to get at a store without gouging someone’s eyes out, isn’t it?

Unlike the NES Classic, the SNES Classic’s lineup is full of genuine masterpieces that have all aged well. There isn’t a single bad game on this thing. Here’s the full list:

Contra III: The Alien Wars™
Donkey Kong Country™
EarthBound™
Final Fantasy III
F-ZERO™
Kirby™ Super Star
Kirby’s Dream Course™
The Legend of Zelda™: A Link to the Past™
Mega Man® X
Secret of Mana
Star Fox™
Star Fox™ 2
Street Fighter® II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania IV™
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts®
Super Mario Kart™
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars™
Super Mario World™
Super Metroid™
Super Punch-Out!! ™
Yoshi’s Island™

Gotta say...that is as close to a perfect list as I have ever seen. I can't argue with any of the inclusions.

The inclusion of a second controller is pretty cool. Although the big about eye-gouging is highly likely.

Hopefully this is a lineup for eventual ports to the Switch.

I'll admit to being slightly more than half-mast about this.

Man that game list is REALLY solid! I dont think theres a single so so game there.

Ive heard $80 which is the price of the nes classic with a second controller anyways. Now hopefully Nintendo actually gives us enough so I dont have to punch a scalper in theface

I mean, there's always more. Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Smash TV and Populous were all games I spent far too much time playing. But heck yes I want this.

F-Zero, Street Fighter 2, and Star Fox is interesting but it is missing a lot of the games I'd die for. (Okay not die, but just...they were really good and I'd love to play them again.)

I mean no:
Super Play Action Football
Wing Commander 1-2 + Secret Missions
Super Strike Eagle
Top Gear
NBA JAM
ActRaiser
King of the Monsters
Samurai Shodown
Super Chase H.Q.

There's always going to be games we wish would be on it. But, on the bright side, many classic games are still available. Two of the wished for games in this thread, Populous and Wing Commander, can be picked up for cheap on GOG.com. Admittedly, that's not much of an option if you don't like gaming on a PC.

I can't wait to hear about how scalpers are listing them on ebay while most fans are unable to get one. I'm not bitter.

Will this contain the ability to use your own catridges, or is it just the preinstalled games?

I believe it is the same as the NES Classic Mini - ie, the games are installed only - no cartridge slot.

Would love to get hold of one of these (assuming it even makes it to the UK). The NES Classics are going for upwards of £120 - £130 on Ebay at the moment; I dread to think what this will be.

As an aside, it serves as a timely reminder as to just how ugly the NTSC SNES was compared to the PAL version

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So apparently it went on pre-order with Nintendo UK today (no, I didn't know either) and sold it out in 25 mins. So I guess that confirms the suspicion that Nintendo don't intend to even attempt to try and match demand.

This is correct. It fits in the palm of one's hand so not much room for a cartridge slot.

Amazon UK also had it on preorder and ran out quickly. Even though they said they would have more than they did of the NES I am having my doubts that things will be much different.

Eh, that's an okay list. But at the same time, really limited. No ActRaiser, no Demon's Crest, no Metal Warriors, no JRPGs other than Secret of Mana and FF2, no Super Mario RPG, and so on. It's just a "SNES Best Hits" thing advertising games that everyone already knows anyway really.

Super Mario RPG is on the list. Also it is FF3(6) not FF2.

Isn't Earthbound a JRPG?

But yeah, this is definitely a greatest hits package. There's probably a licensing reason behind lots of the choices, too.

I admit, I missed super mario rpg amidst the list of way too many super mario games. But I did mention final fantasy.

Still, my point is that's a paltry and lifeless selection of a genre otherwise rather full of life and variety.

No Lufia series, or Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, the other FF games or Gaia/Mana games, the Breath of Fire series, Ogre Battle, Terranigma, SoulBlazer, Evermore, I could go on and on and on. And that's to say nothing of the non-JRPG games that are completely missed by this tiny "library". And don't give me the excuse of "but it's a small console it can'th old that much", I can hold an emulator and thousands of games on a single thumb-sized flash drive that cost me five bucks or less, so that excuse don't fething fly. My old sandisk, which was a cheap MP3 player that existed before smartphones and cost less than this SNES emulator with a plastic box does, can hold more games than that.

If you want to defend it for its ease of use and such, that's fine. But trying to defend its selection of games, especially when there is explicitly no way to get more and never will be, flies about as well as a brick thrown by a toddler.

I think that game list is almost perfect! Super excited for this

Only problem is now I'm tempted to go find these games on other platforms in the interim

Completely missed the first batch of these :(
Amazon UK were sold out within minutes apparently, Game and then the official Nintendo store followed soon after..

Have heard that they will produce some more of these than they did the NES mini, so hopefully they will stick around for at least 10 minutes on sites to give me a chance.

Disappointed not to see ActRaiser on there, although will be nice to have a go on Earthbound and FFVI, which didn't get a European release at the time.

If you don't manage to get a copy of this console, you can get the FF game, I think, on Steam at least. It's fairly cheap IIRc.

My wife just bought a Retron 3 yesterday... so I guess I won't lose sleep if I can't get a copy of this.

Granted, acquiring a lot of the games I want is going to end up costing more then just the $80 from this.

There's no way we'll find this other than for 4X the value on eBay. I searched Target, Walmart, Toys R Us on a regular basis for the Classic with no luck at all...

You can find me in the Chicago Tiki Room, where the drinks are always strong but don't taste that way!!!

Honestly it isn't about the games themselves, as there are many ways to obtain them to play, but that the thing itself is pretty nifty. I'm going to guess that Nintendo will screw it up and make it a heyday for scalpers and bots once again though.

I would like to have one just because it is kind of neat but like the previous one, which I never saw at all, I'm not going to go out of my way to get nor will I stop working on my arcade cabinet with a Pi in it to run all my old games so I don't have to hook up old systems and pull carts out of storage.

That is an amazing list, I would like to see a few important(Chrono Trigger) ones added, but I cannot complain about that. My favorite RPG (Super Mario RPG) as well as my favorite Zelda game make the list. I shall be looking in to this for sure.

I think you may have misread the list. Not only are there JRPGs on there, but some of the best are on there. Secret of Mana, FF3, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound? Not many more you can justify adding to a 21 game list. (Personally, I would have dropped Contra for Chrono Trigger)

Holy cow, the super mario rpg AND ghosts and goblins!

Edit: my only complaint would be I wished it had more Zelda games but good lord above is that list made of win.

Pretty sure A Link to the Past is the only Zelda game made for the SNES?

You kinda missed my point, which was simple; Why limit it to 21 games? The hardware can take far more than that without any problems, and it's not like they're making a profit off of selling these old games individually any more. It's just kinda arbitrary, and the arbitrary nature puts me off a bit.
