So raw can you take a transport for a unit if that unit cannot embark on it? Ie can primaris marines take a rb for fire support?

Yes. Filling a unit slot unlocks a dedicated transport slot. So even though your primaris marines can't hop in a rhino, taking one unit of them also lets you take a rhino. The rulebook even mentions that 'dedicated transports; is now kind of a misnomer, since it's no longer dedicated to the actual unit.

You can even take a rhino for your predator... 8th edition is basically unbound (but nobody cares).

With the ability to take units across traditional factions and detachments being so specialized, 8th edition is effectively unbound. Adding the battleforged moniker to list construction is near-laughable.

No. You cannot take a DT for a unit that it cannot hold.
You can take a DT because you took a unit that it cannot hold.
DTs aren't dedicated anymore, they are also not purchased for any unit in particular. Their slots are simply available for each slot that you fill in the detachment.
That said: any IFV type DT is well worth taking when no models can ride in them.
