So I really like FFG's specialty dice system for RPGs and how it, in many ways, help lighten some GM burderns before and during sessions. But, my players aren't 100% into Star Wars, and they preferred the D10 system from Warhammer Fantasy, so I've been unable to run anything with it.

Now that FFG has announced a generic version of these rules, I'm all aboard. First thing I'm likely to run is a Cyberpunk game set in the Android Universe, although I'll likely be converting my upcoming D&D campaign to this system just because the time savings. D&D has a lot of crunch, but that also means more prep.

It's a good system, and it fits very well for generic games. I always get into weird situations playing Edge of the Empire though, where my character will somehow fail with 4 advantages or something.

I've been reading up on some quirks with the SWRPG system in that the value of certain dice isn't as much as designers anticipated in actual play. They have a lot of things, like common (low powered) abilities triggering on 2-4 advantages and a success, when such situations are actually very difficult to get with the way the dice roll.

Hopefully this is a chance for them to fix such issues. The dice appear to be the same overall though.

It is a good system but seems to go off the rails in longer campaigns, but I do love it and the system encourages team work inside the group.
The difficult part is new players getting a handle of the dice at first but once they get adjusted it runs very well.

I still prefer the percentage dice version of warhammer role play; I guess it was what I cut my teeth on so maybe just a soft spot for it.

Might check it out...just worry is "why is this being released??"

Is the Star Wars licence about to expire and they are hoping to shift the players to this game?

I think it's more like they don't want to have to remake the entire system just for settings they're not sure will sell on their own.

SWRPG sells, 3 big base sets of books worth based on the power of the license alone. However, does FFG really even have an RPG setting that can carry that weight? If you look at all the material produced for the SWRPG, it's expensive stuff too.

They're probably not going to get the same reception with say an Android RPG even if Netrunner is still popular. They also have Legend of the Five Rings now, but that's a niche market if anything, and they can't tie it to 7th Sea anymore.

So, instead of spending money duplicating pages and new dice with special icons for each niche setting, they put out core rules and a source book.

Likewise, I don't think there's anything sinister about this news in relation to their licenses.

FFG has spent a lot of time on the system, both with WHFRP and Star Wars, so why not leverage that effort into a genetic platform.

I find it's a good system, so allowing others to adapt it to their backgrounds makes sense.

Maybe they will release sourcebooks for some of their old D&D 3rd edition settings. I never played in any of them, but I heard that they were top quality products and settings.

Looks interesting, it seems a lot like Savage Worlds, where a base set of rules can literally handle any genre, and specific setting books can be made for situations where the core rules are tweaked, like how basic sci-fi can be handled with the core Savage Worlds rules, but then you can have niche books like the Rifts setting.

I'm not a fan of games with proprietary materials, like the FFG dice, though.

I am definitely going to pick this up and see how it will work for running Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness. I love, love, love, LOVE that setting but man, Palladium's system is garbage.

An Android RPG would be great, especially if they manage to integrate "real" and "virtual" world actions. I'm sure they're planning an RPG in the Descent/Rune<thing> setting too.
