Hawkmen by Cold War Minis

Inspired by the old black and white serials but with a modern twist, these minis are an imagining of a range from a "rediscovered lost serial".

Adversarial Aliens, Despotic Dictators and Rampaging Robot Legions are all planned, the range launches with the Heroic Hawkmen.

The range is scaled at "Heroic 28" (32mm) which is a standard size for current Sci-Fi and Fantasy Minis. At this size they are slightly taller than some older 28mm ranges and slightly shorter than some newer ranges but should sit well alongside both. They are also proportioned to be "fairly chunky" like traditional putty sculpted minis.

(Picture of other manufactures products for comparison purposes only)

The Hawkmen are sculpted digitally and will be produced in Resin as the lighter weight allows for more dynamic poses and makes the flying poses more stable on a stand. The minis will be supplied with plastic bases and flying stands where appropriate.

To start with there are 10 designs available, half in flight and half on the ground with more designs, optional extras, specials and exclusives available to unlock if they are popular and the campaign progresses.

and for those wishing they they were a bit more 'Flash Gordon' and less 'Rocketeer' there are plans for a more flappy alternative flight method as a stretch goal (see facebook for more https://www.facebook.com/coldwarminis/)

Edit: Watch the KS video even if you don't normally, it's well worth a look!

Update #1 ℹ Jul 1 2017

Taking Flight

First 24 hours and already over a third funded, absolutely brilliant. At a time when a certain 8th Edition hits the streets that's a fantastic response, Thank You All.

We are well on the way before all my ads and banners kick into gear. Help spread the word far and wide and we'll see the Hawkmen soar.

Let me know what you'd most like to see in further releases and your thoughts on the Wings vs Jets debate.

Update #3 ℹ Jul 3 2017

We made it, now funded, Hooray!

A Massive Thanks to everyone, we've just hit the target and this thing is definitely happening.

The Hawkmen are Up and Flying!

Someone else looks quite pleased about it, this freebie and just for fun "Enthusiastic Earthling" mini will be included with all Pledges of a "Wing" or more :-)

Yippee!

Right I better knuckle down and get those promised stretch goals knocked into shape

To the Second Week and Beyond

Well it’s been a big first week, this KS has already passed the target and is steadily growing with more backers and pledges, meaning some more of those tempting stretch goals are within sight as we are about to enter the second week. The second stretch has has just unlocked this morning.

A Big Thank You to everyone for your continued support. :-)

I’ve added the details of the next couple to the campaign (RocketCycle!) and been busy behind the scenes with advertising and spreading promotional material across the web as well as the hundred and one other things that are needed for this stuff to happen. Some of you have asked about what plans there are for this range beyond the Hawkmen so I thought it’s about time I shared my vision of the future.

Square Jawed Heroes, Feisty Companions, Evil Adversaries, Rayguns, Rocketships, Aliens and Robots all the elements of classic pulp sci-fi that we know and love all brought to the tabletop in a fresh new way.

The ultimate goal for this project is to create a new range of minis with complementary skirmish rules to allow for quick fun battles and scenarios across all kinds of exotic alien worlds. The emphasis will be on simple, quick play pulpy fun rather than a multitude of complex stat options. I envisage the game will include quick reference cards for different factions but will include “Use as” rules for those of you who already have some cool minis from other manufacturers and want to use them in your games. As I’ve stated elsewhere in the comments, I’m not a big fan of “lock in” rulesets and this will allow you to play with your other favourite minis without bias. However to be clear, this is a future plan and rules are not part of this initial KS.

I also have plans for more factions and a few really cool terrain pieces that will build up the range over time. I won’t reveal too much at this early stage as you can no doubt guess some of the kinds of factions I have in mind but to get a mini scale Rocket Ship onto the tabletop would be simply awesome!

I’m sure some of you will be wondering why this is a generic pulp sci-fi range rather than a specific licensed range based on a particular show or film. There are a few reasons, unsurprisingly licensing costs big bucks and this alone tends to limit the lifespan of a range. Support for licensed ranges tends to disappear overnight as soon as the license has expired, whether people still enjoy playing the game or not. Another factor which might not be immediately obvious is that a licensee has to strictly follow a very rigid interpretation of the style guide and this can really limit what can be included in a range.

So to give me scope to make all kinds of cool stuff, while inspired by the old serials I’m not going to make carbon copies but rather take the genre and use that to create something that has the same feel but looks new.

I’m starting with the iconic Hawkmen, my take on them is to combine elements of the serials plus numerous inspirations from Air Force History and the Art Deco and Futurism art movements. I’ve gone with resin for these particular minis because the lighter weight allows for more dynamic poses, if produced in metal the flying poses in particular would cause problems with broken or unbalanced flight stands. This is not to say that every future release in the range will be resin, some minis will be better suited to pewter and so will be made that way. The Hawkmen are not the easiest or most straightforward minis range to make but they are cool, I’ve always fancied some and that’s why they are here. I hope you love them as much as I do.

Like all projects, it takes a lot of time, effort and money to bring to reality and not every great idea can translate into a finished product. The aim of this Kickstarter is to gauge interest in my Retro Sci-Fi Vision and to acquire some funds to allow me to push ahead with it.

Stretch Goal 3 - Bomber Boys. The Hawkmen Bombardiers forego the long range of the HawkBow for a deadly payload of bombs. Whether raining death from above or supporting their Wingmen on the ground with a throw that rivals any quarterback, these Flyboys pack a powerful punch. Another 2 minis available for selection as part of any of the pledges.

Bombs Away

Stretch Goal 4 - Hawkman Rocket Cycle. An absolute beast of a machine the Rocket Cycle hurtles towards it's prey at breathtaking speed. Packing twin mounted Laser Cannon, it is the Hawkmen's heavy support and more than a match for most opponents. A £20 add on when unlocked or a unit of 3 for £50

Something New is in the Air.

I’ve added a new exclusive mini to the Hawkmen available as selection choices. Sporting a bit of a Sky Pirate Vibe, Wing Commander Dakara is only available through Kickstarter. I hope as well as being a great optional choice for you guys, she will encourage more backers to join the flock and therefore allow us to unlock a few more stretch goal options over the rest of the campaign. Like all the other Hawkmen she will have the option for Jets or Feathered Wings.

Have you looked at her heels? It would be terrible to walk back and forth on the crosswalk all day. The jet pack makes it easy for her to remain relaxed and not have sore feet at the end of the day.

I assumed she would be performing on a stage under a single spotlight to the accompaniment of live cafe jazz musicians. Now that I think about, the showstopper most likely involves her jet pack flying off and taking her uniform with it, leaving her in only heels, tassels and eyepatch. Brrrrapp-Bwah Bwah! T-dsssh ...and curtain.

Damn it, now I might need this mini. And some jazz musicians.

Week 2 and Wings

As was to be expected the second week has been quieter than the rush of launch week but the campaign is making progress and I'm continuing to advertise on forums, by web banners and social media. A big thanks to all of you who are helping to spread the word.

In the last couple of days I've been working away at the generic feathered wing, one of the trickiest pieces to make as it has to be able to fit and work with any pose. Here is a pic of how it looks currently, I still have to add a row of coverts (small feathers) to the inside of the wings and double check the fit against every mini but I'm pretty happy with how it is progressing. The larger flying wings will be in the same style (much the same as they are shown in the preview) but now with a better grasp of wing anatomy the placement of the feathers will be more accurate.

Is each wing a separate piece? Can they be attached to the jet packs Vulture style, or to create B-movie Sanguinary Guard?

The wings and jetpacks are going to be alternate options for the minis,

however it looks like you will be able to pick up the wings separately if you want to convert your own B-Movie Sanguinary Guard

Cold War Miniatures Creator about 23 hours ago

I plan to make extra sets of wings available as add-ons for those that want multiple options but I haven't added the details yet as I need to double check my costings before I do so. I estimate they will cost approximately £1.50 each but I will confirm later once I've run through the figures again.

Time is ticking down, 9 days to go

only £50 to the next stretch goal

so does anybody need 10 flappy or jetty hawkmen to help get us there? Don't miss the chance to shout 'Go Long' or 'Bombs Away' during your games

Diving into the final week

Posted by Cold War Miniatures (Creator)

In preparation for the final week of this KS I have updated the project with more stretch goals, added a new £75 pledge level and included an option for extra sets of wings, as requested in case you want to have the option to swap back and forth between jets and wings or just can't decide which you'd prefer.

The updated goals include all the 3 previewed Specials, RocketCycle, King and Medic, 5 new Hawkmen (bringing the total to 20 different troop choice minis) and an additional Free KS exclusive if they are all unlocked. Ambitious perhaps but I believe it is an achievable target and will give all of you a great selection of minis to choose from.

So ready my Hawkmen, .......

Dive!

I asked for you

Cold War Miniatures Creator 6 minutes ago

To avoid making things more complicated and to be fair to backers who have been on board since the beginning I am not going to be offering late pledges with this KS.

There are a range of pledges to suit all budgets and it is timed to finish after most people's last Friday of the month payday so that should help. I will allow backers to adjust their pledges before shipping, for instance if you really want 2 wings but can only afford to pledge for 1 before the KS ends but this option won't be open to those who miss the KS, sorry.

Once I have the KS pledges ready to ship I'll open up pre-orders on my website but of course the KS exclusives are only available through this campaign. So if people really want them then they have a week to get their pledges in and help to unlock some more stretch goals.

The Final Few Hours

Posted by Cold War Miniatures (Creator)

Time, like the Hawkmen flies and we're into the last 2 days of this KS. I'm hoping that end of the month pay-packets will give this campaign a little boost as we approach the final credits, already this week 1 more stretch goal has been unlocked so perhaps more will do so in the last few days/hours.

Whether they do or not I really appreciate all your continued support and input on this project which will allow this range to go into production as I had hoped.

I look forward to getting these awesome Hawkmen flying out to you.
