Guard command squads, specifically scions, are definitely winning in 8th. The strange thing though, is that everyone else has had their command squads replaced with characters like standard bearers and apothecaries. Why not do this with guard?

Scrap the command squad and have a medic, standard bearer and vox operator as Elite slot characters like every other army.

You could use a sergeant/tempestor stat line with an extra wound or 2.

No more OP command squads and more unique units to use. Scions will still be good, just not OP, cause you'll have to pay for 10 guys to get 4 plasma guns.

Thoughts?

Which armies lost Command Squads? Marines still have theirs (Company Veterans & Honour Guard)?

Maybe lost was the wrong word, broken down into their individual parts.

Instead of command squads you have vets, ancients, apothecaries and champions.

I won't lie, I think that the ability to have "command" squads just toting all of one weapon as a way to spam weaponry isn't great, especially for Scions which are already veteran units. The company and platoon command squads may as well just be glorified Special Weapon Teams. So, to me, I'd have no issue scrapping these "command" squads.

I like the way they're broken down into individuals, but I don't like how they take up so many Elites slots - perhaps for all factions have a rule wherein 1-3 "Support" characters (so banner bearers, medics, champions) can be taken in one slot.

Honestly there is 3 changes they need to mAke to fix unbalanced gak.
1) Change plasmaguns and plasmapistols to str6 or str7 overcharged. The reason being is mathematically plasmaguns are outperforming similar weapons for it's significantly better than grenade launchers and better then meltaguns vs both intended targets. Plasma cannons are balanced with other heavy weapons. This will also take plasmaguns out of the powerful str 8 range.

2) increase the cost of all scions by 1ppm. They are all ridiculously efficient for the cost.

3) limit the number of command squads to the amount of commanders... seriously this never made sense to have an army of command squads and 1 commander.

And honestly number 1 is the most important change as that's the biggest problem across the board as it just makes plasmagun extremely powerful for deepstrike units. Str8 is very powerful this edition.

Yes! I think this is a great idea! Give them all 3 wounds each and make them individual characters. Now, being characters will grant them extra protection from shooting, but I think it's an ok trade off. Just as long as they all get suitable titles.

For example, would the one carrying the standard be a colour sergeant or an ensign? What about the medic? And what about the vox operator and the special weapon trooper? Finally, in a simalar manner to space marine lieutenants, I think they should be multiple models per choice, and be required to be deployed at the same time (but not close together like a vehicle squadron).

Well with the FAQ out today GW put the axe to multiple command squads of both varieties. Now you need one officer per command squad and one Tempestor Prime per scion command squad.
