Somewhere in south-central England.

I am trying to choose a carry on suitcase for short business trips. I want the biggest size that will be carried by any airline, since I don't know which airlines I will be travelling on.

Thanks to GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY there are dozens of different standards set by different airlines for the allowable size, shape and weight of case.

Therefore it's impossible to optimise my choice.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Try using a standard black garbage bag. Those can be adjusted to fit any reasonable size restriction.

Nothing says "Serious Business" like showing up with all your things clutched in a torn old garbage bag.

Size and Weight

"In general, look for a bag that has maximum dimensions of 21 x 9 x 15 inches and you should be fine for most airlines. However, carry-on luggage needs to meet the airline's maximum size requirements so it's really important to check the airline's website to get the latest details before you purchase. After you've finished packing, use a scale to ensure it isn't heavier than the airline's rules. "

Wouldn't this be an absence of government bureacracy causing the issue? By staying out of it and letting each airline set their own requirements you end up with loads of different standards. If govt set a limit then it might be dirty, dirty socialism, but at least it would be consistent dirty, dirty socialism.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Sometimes, as a friend who recently traveled found out, it doesn't matter. . . . By this I mean, she researched the size that you had to be under for that specific airline. Got to the airport, demonstrated that her bag fit in the box at the check in counter. She got through security, only to be told AT THE GATE that her bag was "too big" and then forced her to check it, including all relevant fees that would've been assessed at check-in for checked luggage.

In this instance, I don't think it's government bureaucracy that is the downfall of western civ, it's greedy, douche-canoe employing corporations.

That's one thing to keep in mind: even if you meet the generic size limits, the plane you'll be on may have different limits if it's a smaller plane with smaller storage compartments. And if you're one of the last to board, you'll still probably have to check your bag anyway because everybody before you already filled all the compartments.

Just don't be that guy who holds up the entire boarding line because he has to spend three minutes trying to figure out exactly how to cram his overstuffed bag into the compartment in just the right way to make it fit. And then spend the same amount of time trying to get it back out again after landing.

Who's consistent dirty socialism though? As it eeds to be globalised.

Sounds like consistent dirty hegemonic imperialism instead. which can be ok by me depending on who is running it.
