so im trying to build a gaming PC and came across this for $400.
it seems to price out ok but would like to know how it will run.

can any of you tell me if this is a decent start?
id also like to know if anyone is familiar enough to tell me how i can figure out what kind of case i need to get?
the guy says the cooler master V8 is big and may not fit in a mid size or smaller case.

i think i can figure out which video card to get, im thinking nvidia 1060.
i also need to figure out how to make sure if the power supply i get will fit in the case.

sorry for so many questions. i think the last PC that i built was a 486 =P

That sound comparable to my specs. I'm not a computer ricer so I'm not going to toss out benchmarks, but I don't think there's a game I've played that got lower than 30 fps or so on high settings.

You might be better off going to tom's hardware or one of those types of sites for computer recommendations. Advice here is historically sketchy outside of a small handful of people.

Mobo seems ok. I dont know US prices but I would be happy with that. i7's are sill very exensive over here.
You might well get a better price though, so look around.

The one tip I can say is that you should get as good a processor and board as your budget can afford, then add in cheap dog graphics and ram and your old storage,preferably porting them over where you have compatiblity. Then sequentially upgrade those components one at a time as your budget recovers. You wont get anything like the performance you want right of the bat, and might even not be able to play your newest games for a while but it means you get a better rig long term while staying within whatever budget you have set for yourself and not having to use finance.

Definitely not bad for $400. The CPU is a little old. You could probably search for a newer gen i5, seeing as most games don't benefit significantly from the extra cores in an i7.

A 1060 is a solid GPU and will run anything you throw at it in the 60FPS range at med-high settings. 16GB RAM is plenty, so really, you just need some storage. I'd recommend getting an SSD at some point, even if its just for your OS. The boot times are amazing with it and I can never go back now that I have one.

The V8 is beefy, that's true - the first model is 161,1 mm high, the newer versions 166,5 mm. Any respectable webstore will, however, write out what size of graphics card and what height CPU cooler you can install. And as long as you buy a case called "ATX" any ATX PSU will fit it without problems.

If I was building a new machine (with that cooler and a GTX1060) and wanted a quality case to last me for years I'd probably pick a Fractal Design Define series (4, 5 or C) right now. They're not showy (no side window or glowing bits) but stylish and silent with good cable management and lots of room for extra bits. Might run you a good $90 though. And you'll have to make sure you get a PSU with long enough connector cables in order to run them behind the mobo mounting plate.

edit: well, they do seem to make them with windows too...
