Hello All,

As mentioned in my Intro, I have been quite a while out of the hobby, missing 4 editions along the way... I started in 3rd Edition with Dark Eldar and painted them as per the example on the Warriors box, Red body, Silver helmet & Goblin Green base as was the style at the time. The army consisted of big blob squads of warriors as they were the cheapest and used to come in a box of 16 (crazy!). They were supported by very small squads of metal miniatures, wyches, grotesques, some ugly hellions. Oh, and I had 1 raider and 5 jetbikes. Not exactly a winning list.

My painting skills were terrible and weren't helped by the paints I had, GW paints are much much much better now than they were in 1999/2000... Last year I made an effort to get back into the hobby side and in preparation to revamping my Dark Eldar, I decided to get my skills up to scratch with a very small Crimson Fist army. Learning how to layer, highlight and drybrush was the plan. The picture here is a comparison of a Marine from my first Tactical Squad and one from my second Tactical Squad. I'm very happy with the improvement I made between the two squads and If I can keep a standard like that second squad, I'll be very pleased with myself. Below that is my attempt at free-handing, it takes a lot of practice but overall I am happy with my improvements.

Once the hype for 8th Edition started, I snapped out of my Space Marine experiment and began stripping my metal Dark Eldar miniatures and a 10 strong Warrior squad ready for a new life. My overall aim for my armies is table-top standard and I have an "arm's length" test that I do to pass/fail my models. Characters get a bit more attention but I am still finding a balance between time spent painting the model with realistically how much time they will spend on the table. This Image is my before/after paint scheme. I went a bit overboard with the green wash on the splinter rifle but all in all I'm feeling good about the new scheme. I need to figure out how I should highlight the grey bodysuit and in future I will leave the green wash to the bayonet only. Also, I have found I am able to paint breasts with much less sniggering than I did 15 years ago.

I know, I know, that rough little bit of sprue on the barrel is annoying me too....

My plan for the bases is a lunar-scape, in my mind using astro-granite texture paint, a blue wash then drybrush with a grey then a white... Looks good in my head... I really want something to help the models stand out, so a dark base is out and I don't think I can bring myself to replicate Goblin Green..... My inspiration is imagining a pirate Eldar that regularly harasses moon bases and small, middle-of-nowhere outposts. I never really felt a draw to the sadistic, psychopathic etc.. stylised Dark Eldar, I prefer to think of them as arrogant, selfish, backstabbing pirates/slavers. The exception being the old metal grotesque models... I like them a lot...

Anyway... I got going with my HQ and chose a model I have always liked, the Haemonculus:

The head looks a little grainy but I have no idea how to fix that. I initially envisioned a greyish blue skin tone but I am not sure now if I could continue with this in my wyches, I fear it will blend in with their clothes. Maybe I will inverse the bodysuit and armour colours... I haven't really made a start on them.

The whole point of this post is some WIP, so I better get on with it. The plan was a Wych Cult supported with a small number of Warriors:

Dark Imperium will definitely not be a distraction....

On the painting table I have waiting:

These will be my next squads, I don't want to get stuck painting too many Warriors or Wyches at a time and with these models I would like to spend a bit more time and effort. I have my HQ, I will use as a Succubus and an additional Haemonculus, Three of the OOP Grotesques, these I will image as captives from other Kabals, their armour will be different colours to resemble the unfortunate Kabalite victims. It will also give me a bit of variety in the army appearance. Lastly are a squad of old Wyches, these are at this stage intended to be a Shadow War Armageddon team and as such I am thinking to paint each one in an individual colour scheme.

After all that, there are 30 additional Wyches, 10 Hellions, 4 Venoms, 2 Raiders, 5 Scourges, a Ravager and 10 Warriors (these will be kit-bashed with the hellions to make incubi) that will make up the army.

Now I am hoping I can keep this on track to being regularly updated, and I hope it appeals to the Dark Eldar players out there, I'd love to share ideas/inspirations and would love to hear feedback/criticism/advice on how it's all going. After I make some headway with the Dark Eldar, I'll branch into the Dark Imperium set, I have a lot of ideas racing around my head with the Primaris Marines and I love the Plague Marines... I also have a few Tyranid Genestealers and whatever the small hoard critters with guns are. They will be my "break away" figures when I need to refresh or try something new.

Please let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see, It all needs to get done eventually...

Well there we go... That took a lot longer than I intended.... Time to paint those Grotesques...

The Scadman.

I had a quiet weekend, the kind where there are a lot of maybes, but you end up just watching TV and playing with your dogs...

Cheers, I know the old DE attracted a lot of criticism for ugly models but I think most of that can be attributed to Goblin Green bases... I really liked the original Incubi and Grotesques, I prefer the old Haemonculus models too. One thing that might change is my GIANT shoulder pads Dracon (proxy Succubus). It's not the best out there... But with new paint, they might as well be new models to me, I haven't seen them in 15+ years.

Thanks a lot, I've been playing around with what I have and the list I can make with it and I'm stuck somewhere around 1500 points or so (its 70 Power or there abouts). I think I will look at picking up 2 sets of Gangs of Commorragh and fill up my fast attack slots, they should be more than enough... Maybe a second Ravager too...

Tonight I picked out a few details on my 10 Warriors, they're more or less finished (minus the base), and I gave some heavy weapons and a second Sybarite a Dettol bath. My initial plan was to make up 2 squads of 10 warriors, each with 1 splinter cannon, but after rethinking my army list, I will go for 2 squads of 5 Trueborn and add 2 splinter cannons to each squad. On the table they will probably function as dark lances, but I don't have the bits available to change them so the old splinter cannons will stay. They will ride around in Venoms.

I also got my base colours and a wash done on the 3 Grotesques. I suffered a lot with itty bitty arms snapping off and if it happened once more I would have put them in the "too hard" basket and done something else. I think I will need to use a bit of filler or something around the join on the arm just to give it a bit more to cling onto in the shoulder socket. You'll be able to see it in the photo.

Apologies for how dark they came out, my apartment has terrible lighting in the evening, I'll need to take some better pics in the morning.
This first one I'm pleased with, I more or less copied it's original colour scheme, except I've tried a blue/grey skin tone this time.

The second one has the arms that like to snap off, on the left side you can see it. Question: What's a good way to clean dried super glue off a model? Just scrape it away?
I haven't put any ink on the claws and need to patch up some areas. This one I'm not yet sold on.

Lastly is a simple one, all the base colours are down so now I can tidy it up a bit and start picking out the detail in the stomach.

Lastly, here's a terrible group shot with poor lighting:

So yeah, Grotesques are coming along, I need to do a tidy up and then start picking out all the little details and hopefully they'll be looking alright. I'll need to improve the photo taking too....
A friend mentioned they are far smaller than the current Grotesque models... So these might be a bit of paining practice until I get proper sized models... Unsure at this stage. I'm not overly keen on Wracks...

Once the Grotesques are done, I'll have a go at assembling some of the Wyches, I'm planning 2 squads of 10 in Raiders, I have another 10 I can assemble if I want bigger foot-slogging squads but I don't think my Wyches would appreciate that tactic.

Tonight I stripped a few more of the old Warriors, that included 2 Sybarites and 3 splinter cannons. I also managed to get another layer on the Grotesques, they're slowly coming together...

I hadn't really put much thought into a list before I started painting my first squad, so currently I have the following painted (minus basing):

HQ:
Haemonculus

TROOPS:
Warriors (10)
splinter rifles (9)
splinter cannon (1)

With the additional Warriors cleaned up, I'll turn the above squad into my Trueborn squads, that will leave me with 5 spare Warriors with splinter rifles I'm yet to find a use for. Eventually I would like to add 2 blasters in each squad but scavenging the bits looks like it will be a pain, so I might Ebay some of the OOP metal Warriors with blasters just to keep the aesthetic. These squads will be in Venoms and will hopefully give me some anti-infantry and backup anti-armour support.

The entire list, using models I currently have looks like this:

HQ: 258 points
Succubus
blast pistol
archite glaive
Venom
splinter cannon

Haemonculus
liquefier gun
scissorhand

ELITES: 568 points
Trueborn (5)
splinter rifles (3)
splinter cannon (2)
Venom
splinter cannon

Trueborn (5)
splinter rifles (3)
splinter cannon (2)
Venom
splinter cannon

Incubi (5)
demi-klaive (1)
Venom
splinter cannon

TROOPS: 482 points
Wyches (10)
blast pistol (1)
agoniser (1)
hydra-gauntlets (3)
Raider
disintegrator cannon

Wyches (10)
blast pistol (1)
agoniser (1)
hydra-gauntlets (3)
Raider
disintegrator cannon

FAST: 320 points
Hellions (10)

Scourge (5)
dark laces (4)

HEAVY: 155 points
Ravager
dark lances (3)

That makes a healthy 1723 points.
The only additions I have thought about would be either a second squad of 5 Scourge, a second squad of 10 Hellions or 2 squads of 3 Reaver jetbikes. I can only really choose one of those options to get around 2000 points
I will also have 10 spare Wyches and about 20 spare Warriors I can add into the list if I'm light on bodies.

So that's what I'll work my way through, I know I haven't included the Grotesques, I can't find a place for them and the change in model size is bugging me... Oh well. It's all part of the project.
Next will be the Trueborn and Succubus.

Thanks a lot, I am happy with the Warriors so far and have already learnt enough along the way to make sure the second squad is a bit quicker, easier and hopefully better. Key things for me are learning how to highlight properly, without just painting over the previous coat... That has been a problem a few times but I guess the only way around it is practice.

It's also been helpful to start this post, it's getting me into the habit of doing a little bit each day, rather than big blocks on the weekend. That's been able to assist with motivation too, as I can see things coming together, and I'm not looking at a hobby table full of work every time.

Thanks for the feedback, I am also looking forward to how everything will look when its all assembled and painted. For now it's only boxes and scribbled notes on paper... Slowly it's becoming a reality!

As for updates, today was a good day. I finally reached a stage where I am happy with the Grotesques and I have called them finished. I also undercoated all the metal Wyches, the remaining 3 Warriors with heavy weapons and 2 Sybarites. Then, while waiting for my computer to install updates, I went on and added the base colours to all the Warriors too. I should be able to finish them off reasonably quickly now, just a wash and some highlights and they'll be table standard. I feel like I will soon reach a small milestone, as these should be the only Warriors I need painted, so once they are done, that part of the army is complete and I can move onto the 20 Wyches I have planned so far.

Here are some pictures of the finished Grotesques. As with the Warriors, I need to base them and then I need to find a use for them... At least I can count them as practice and they'll be ready if I add that element to my list in the future, though probably as Wrack proxies.

The G-string on the centre Grotesque is an interesting feature. Dark Eldar are weird.

Once the Warriors are finished I will post some pictures of the 2 finished Trueborn squads with splinter cannons and begin work on my second HQ choice, the Succubus (old Dracon model). After that I should probably make a start on assembling my plastic Wyches, or painting the metal ones. Realistically I probably wont be using the metal Wyches in the army, so I might paint them here and there when I need a change from painting Wyches made of plastic... We'll see...

Tonight I was able to finish off the fiddly little bits I hate to do on rank and file troops (for example: belts) and tidy up the base colours for my Trueborn heavy weapons and Sybarites/Dracons. Then I gave everything a wash. I also put my Succubus on a new base, as her old base had half melted in an accident when I was 12 years old. If everything goes to plan, the Trueborn will finished and I will have all the base colours and a wash on the Succubus by the end of the week. Unfortunately I have a business trip tomorrow (this happens almost weekly) and I won't be home until Friday night, so nothing more will happen until the weekend.

First up are the two WIP Sybarites/Dracons

Secondly the 3 remaining splinter cannons

Well the weekend plan was the finish the Trueborn and get the base colours on the Succubus, but I didn't really feel like it. I was being very indecisive about how I want the Succubus to look and how the overall scheme will look from troops to vehicles. I don't want my Wyches sharing the same scheme as the Trueborn, but similar enough so as not to look like 2 different factions.

In the end I painted 5 of the OOP metal Wyches and Hekatrix, I used slightly brighter colours but kept the same, Red, Blue, Silver theme going. Currently I have only done base colours and a wash. First impression is I really need to figure out how to paint the hair. In this case I based it white and applied a blue wash and it looks terrible. I'd like to make it a bright, more electric blue.
I need to go over the colours again and there are no highlights yet but so far this is what they all look like:

I only took a photo of the Hekatrix, but they're all the same. I decided I wanted my Wyches to be wearing tights/leggings rather than just boots and underwear, so I painted both legs in blue. So now I have 5 Trueborn and 5 (I guess these are Bloodbrides) in the same state, ready for a few colour touch ups, pick out all the little chains and straps, then highlighting. Once I have a finished product, I'll be more confident in how I will paint the Succubus and the 20 other Wyches I have planned. If the bodysuits of the Wyches are predominantly blue instead of red it might work out better for my vehicle plans. I really want to try a stippled effect but with reds I think it might look a bit strange, blue however and I can try to mimic the blues on the Alaitoc Eldar vehicles, something I have always liked and add in a few red bits here and there. I will need to have a better look at the panelling and contours of the Raiders and Venoms before I decide if that's a good idea...

Well.... THAT was a hiatus....

I have a few good excuses though, I had a few months of weekly business travel, summer was in full swing and I went on a few overseas trips.... Time flies!
Honestly, I needed the break though, I was really bummed by how those OOP wyches turned out and it really threw me off. I'm not sure why, but having them on the table just left a bad taste in my mouth, it wasn't what I was picturing the army to be at all... So, they're back in my "to do" box and I have gotten onto other things.

Update:
I have now at my disposal, 2 squads of 5 Trueborn and 1 squad of 5 Warriors complete. There are a couple of heavy weapons needing paint and that will turn the Warriors into a third squad of Trueborn.
I also have about 20 or so additional splinter rifle Warriors that I will get around to in bits and pieces, that's just to give me some flexibility. I would like to run 3x5 Trueborn squads but have the option to turn them into 3x10 or 2x20 squads of Warriors if circumstances call. I do, I do like me some flexibility and it helps with how indecisive I can be sometimes.

So the photos show the other 2 Trueborn squad leaders, and 5 old dark elder Warriors taking a paint stripping bath. Yes, I'm aware the squad leaders need a few touch ups, it was late and I was enjoying a few painting drinks.
I did have a few ideas with basing, I worried a grey lunarscape would just blend into the bodysuit and look terribly bland, so I might have a closer look at my old Goblin Green bases as inspiration and see if I can try a mix of greens and browns to give contrast to the models. Not as bright as 3ed though....

Next up will be 3 Venoms for the Trueborn. I want to paint them similarly to Alaitoc Eldar Vypers, I always loved that scheme. Mine however will substitute Red for Blue over a Black and Grey base colour. I am a bit nervous as to how bright the red will come out, but I have a few contingency schemes if what's in my head cannot be replicated by my hand. I don't own an airbrush so it will all be brush painted, I would like to stipple different shades of red over a predominately Eshin Grey base with blackouts... I guess this will require some photos to properly explain...

Ok so today's task was to tidy up a few things (mold lines, spikes I thought looked cool 15 years ago etc...). I cleaned the next 5 Trueborn/Warriors and am soaking the last few in Dettol now. I also started putting together the 3 Venoms, I'll do them as two halves, something in my head just says that will be easier. The painted miniature is a repair, fat fingers snapped a head off...

Dogs are bugging me to go for a walk now so I'll stop here...

I have found that my laziness lately hasn't been from painting or modelling but from updating here, so I will try to make more of an effort to keep this on track..

Updates for now:

I have finished assembling 3 venoms and undercoated black the exteriors, I also finished painting the cockpits and pilots. I spent way too much time and effort on those as once assembled with the outer piece of the model, a lot of the little details are in shadow or cant be seen at all. Doesn't matter, they're done. I'll need another coat of black over them. Unfortunately I do not have an airbrush, honestly I don't really trust getting a "cheap yet decent" one here in Beijing so I need to do everything with a brush (its difficult to get the spray can primer here too...). Anyway, it's all done with a brush and I have a question; when I use the larger sized brushes, especially when I really thin the paints, I get lots of tiny little bubbles across my painting surface. Should I be concerned about that? It seems to be drying smooth...

As you can see, they're a little bit patchy, but I'm ok with it, I'll go over them again tomorrow. Little by little, that's the key for me.

Last weekend I was a bit more productive, I assembled two units of 5 Wyches; A Hekatrix with agoniser and blast pistol, a Wych with hydra gauntlets and then 3 regular Wyches to round out each squad. I got those undercoated and once I get some colours on the Venoms, I'll probably start the Wyches.

Also put the base colours and washes on my very old original Dracon model, now upgraded to represent my Succubus with archite glaive and blast pistol. Originally I had wanted to make a new Succubus out of the Wych kit with some Hellion bits (and I might do that later) but nostalgia struck and I decided it would be very fitting that the gigantic shoulder pad punk will lead my new iteration of my old army.

It's very early stages right now, I would like to spend some time and make it look decent. I know the model itself is quite terrible , but sentiment has over-ruled and It does feel right that my Dark Eldar leader has re-emerged to strike again!
Idea is basically build up the colours you can see there, I'll make the hair and the staff lighter though. Originally It was painted like my OOP Wyches, practically naked (with armour). I thought against that, grey body suit this time.

There's everything on the project table at the moment (alcohol has disappeared though lololololololololol), which gives me a very small battalion detachment:

HQ
Succubus
Haemonculus

Troops:
5 Warriors
5 Wyches
5 Wyches

Elites:
5 Trueborn
5 Trueborn

Transport:
3 Venom

In actual fact the Trueborn and Warriors are becoming interchangeable. I am making sure I have enough regular splinter rifle miniatures to substitute in for special and heavy weapons and visa versa.
I would like to keep the Warriors/Trueborn in the Venoms and put one HQ with each Wych squad in 2 Raiders. That's a little more than 1000 points give or take with weapons and wargear.

The unofficial goal is to get it all done by Christmas, I will go back to Australia to visit family etc and it would be great if I could have a painted army to play a small game while I am home (minus the basing, I need to pick up supplies).
That means I need to add two Raiders to what is already on the table and I would also really really like to get 5 Scourges assembled and painted but I think I'll run out of time. I'm looking at 2 dark lances and 2 blasters for them (as those are the bits I have) and that will add some more anti-armour I'm a bit short of. Also winged strike sounds really cool.

That's all for today, I hope I can get everything on the project table finished this week and the Raiders assembled on the weekend.

Immediately after my last post I bought a Nintendo Switch and spent the next 6 months playing Zelda, Doom and anything else that piqued my interest......
I also relocated 1000km south to another city in China (because that wasn't a hassle...) and so since December, everything has essentially been on hold.

The Index list I had been preparing did get a few games in around new year, I won one and lost one so that wasn't too bad. It also spurred me on to finish off more models, as a pet peeve of mine is an "undercoat army" taking the field, even though that is exactly what I've used my last half a dozen games or so.

Most recently, I made another trip back to Australia and picked up the Drukhari Codex. It's fantastic and I have now tweaked my list to a 500 (498) point Red Grief Wych Cult Patrol detachment with room to add the 10 Hellions I have sitting patiently in their boxes at a later date.

List:
HQ:
Succubus in Venom

Troops:
5x Wyches in Venom

5x Wyches in Venom

Fast Attack:
5x Reaver Jetbikes

No anti-tank I know, that's what my 500 point Kabal will be for.

Updates:

Succubus: Done. I added an Imperial Fist helmet to the base and I am ashamed to say, it's probably my favourite feature of the model... Photos don't do it justice but it was incredibly simple to get a result that made me contemplate painting a few left over marines this way.

Venoms: Done. I havent added the pintle mounted splinter cannon as it would immediately snap off in transit to my new apartment, but they are at a level I am more that happy to play games with. I don't see myself adding the clear canopy either, I don't really like it so much. Maybe the half canopy later, but not a priority. I haven't put them on their bases in the photo.
Here's a photo of the effect I went for, Eshin grey base, Nuln oil wash, Eshin grey stipple, Dawnstone grey stipple. The red was completed the same way, Khorne red (i think it's called), Carroburg Crimson wash, stipple Khorne red, stipple Mephiston red. I am finding it really hard to take a clear picture of the effect, I might need to wait for daylight and try again.

Wyches: WIP: Need highlights and the base is only sloppy texture paint at the moment. I'll add the lighter colours this weekend, wash and drybrush the bases and they'll be done

Reavers: WIP: I was in Australia a few weeks ago and scrounged these out of a wardrobe at my Mum's house (but I left the G-I-Joes behind). I gave them a dettol bath and stripped the paint (and the skin on my fingers while I was at it) and now they are nice and clean and ready to go. Same deal as the Venoms, I will paint the body a stippled grey with red wings and silver blades. The vents on the sides will be done as I would do plasma guns and I'll see if I can get them to look glowing. I won't add 15 layers of red "blood" to the blades either this time.
I will need to buy some new flying bases for the Reavers and drill new holes for them. The pilots will be kitbashed with some Scourge and Hellion bits to help modernise them.

Not much to update today but I wanted to keep the motivation ball rolling, so I trimmed up the Reaver Jetbikes so they are ready for an undercoat this weekend.

I was too tired after work, walking the dogs and the massive pizza for dinner to paint the Wyches, but I did kit-bash my Archon for the Kabal side of my list.
My favourite artwork in the Codex is the Archon on page 50 soul trapping a would be assassin. I want my Archon to resemble a rank and file Warrior, but be special enough to look like he belongs on the battlefield as a single model. I used Warrior legs, Sybarite torso and banner, Scourge blast pistol and Wych power sword with the scarred, bald head. Not much of an update, but it lines up what I want to get done after the Wyches and Reavers.

The Archon will lead a 500 point Flayed Skull detachment ~ 500 points to match the 500 point Red Grief Wyches that are almost finished.

HQ:
Archon

Troops:
9x Warriors
1x Raider

Fast Attack:
5x Scourge

Heavy Support:
1x Ravager

That will give me 1000 points with a distinct close combat half and a ranged half. Not a very strong list, but I like it.

Wyches are done!

Today was a productive day, but took a lot longer than I had anticipated. Doing all the fiddly little details I needed to find a point where I could call them finished.
For single wound troops, I don't want to spend so much time on them, as it puts me off painting 20 or 30 for the army. Anyway, they have now all passed my arm's length test so I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I still need to learn a lot about painting and layering skin, that was troublesome...

Both squads are the same. Hekatrix with blast pistol and agoniser, Wych with Hydra Gauntlets and 3 regular Wyches. Eventually I will model the other Wych weapon options so I can substitute into my squads depending on how they play and what I like.
They will ride around in the Venoms, though I do have 2 Raiders on the list of things to do, and that will give me a bit of flexibility on how I want to play the Wyches and Warriors together.

This means all my troops are finished! (for now)

I still need to work out a better way to take photos

The only thing left for the Wych Cult now is the Reaver Jetbike squad. Now that the Wyches are done I'm feeling the motivation coming back, so I will try to capitalise upon that and get my Reavers and Archon started tomorrow.

A small update today.

I originally planned to buy some flying bases for the Reaver Jetbikes but I don't like the clear plastic too much and I had a bunch of assorted bases in my bits box. So I cut holes in the cavalry bases and painted them up.
I figure the base more accurately reflects the jetbike's shadow on the battle field so it shouldn't pose a problem in games, if it does, I can always pick up the proper bases later.

To mark out the Arena Champion, I added a Tyranid Termagant to the base and for the special weapon Reaver, there is a half buried Bolt gun. My thinking is to make it a bit easier in games to see who is who as the Arena Champion probably won't be equipped with any wargear and I probably won't model any special weapons.

Anyway, here's the progression today:

Apologies for the shadow on a few of the photos. It wasn't fat fingers, I promise, just bad lighting in the living room at night.

Static grass is great and very easy to use, I have never tried it before but I definitely will continue with it in the future. I added some tufts to the Wyches I finished yesterday as well.
The Termagant was easy, base colours, a wash and a dry brush. The bolt gun was the same but I (very lightly) dry brushed all over with Balthasar gold instead of a silver and it looks a lot better for it.

The Jetbikes didn't get an undercoat, I'll do it this week. I want to buy some small magnets to attach them to the bases, as on closer inspection, drilling holes to match the new flying stands looks like it will be too troublesome.

Quick update tonight, I put the base colours and washed Nuln oil all over the Reavers. Looking a bit too dark at the moment, I want the red to be a bit brighter, so I'll be building that up a lot more.

Another source of colour will be the blue vents, hopefully I can get some glowing effect there.

I still need to do the crappy surround blades/splinter rifle that sit right behind the pilot, but I will leave them to last, once the pilot is in place.

I'll see what I can do with them this week, hopefully I can finish them by the weekend!

Been busy for a couple of weeks but was able to get some small stuff done.

I decided to spruce up the venom bases because I don't like the clear plastic, added some ultramarine bits, I was pretty pleased with the results but man oh man I am not happy with applying decals to space marine pauldrons..... Took 2 attempts but I got a result I was happy with. I wanted an excuse to paint in the style of 3rd company, because I might use my left over marines to make up a squad of 3rd company Ultramarines just for fun. In fact I might do those after the jetbikes are finished to give me something different to think about.

Can't really see so well in the photo but it was all dry-brushed with Ushabti bone, so the raised grit looks much lighter to the naked eye.

Next up I finished most of the Reaver jetbike test model and I got all of them magnetised on the bases which gave me a boost in motivation.
Overall I like the new paint scheme much better than what I did 18 years ago, I still need to fix up some of the glowing areas I'm not totally satisfied with but its ok. I still need to do the splinter rifle that sits on top. I'm not a big fan of it and have considered just leaving them off, but then my jetbikes would be modelled with no weapons.....

I did the jetbike same as the venoms, but the grey looks a bit messy, I'll need to be a bit more refined with the next one. The red turned out ok and I am reasonably ok with the glow I got on the front, I would like to add some very fine white lines to the ridges inside the vents but I was unable to do that with the football on TV today....

The Crimson fist marine was to help me remember how to paint plasma guns again...
It was tricky to get the glow in the recess on the bike body just in front of where the rider will be. That area is quite small and my skills aren't great. I will attempt to exaggerate those areas with glow on the pilot. Not expecting much as I have never tried lighting/glow effects on models before...

I will finish the remaining bikes and take a group shot in the next week or so, then I'll call my 500 point Wych cult complete. I already have the units required to make it 1000 points sitting on the shelf and with a Ravager, Raider and a squad of Scourge will have my 500 point Kabal good to go as well.

I'm guessing the next addition would either be the Scourge or the Raider as they will help me scale up games and add a bit of anti-vehicle fire to my list.
