Hey guys I'm doing a commission of Space wolves with the new Dark Imperium set and these are probably my single least favorite chapter so I know nothing about them. Can anyone help me pick out some good markings for the armor? I've looked around briefly but I'm trying not to spend as long as it took painting them (Actually turning into much longer at this point) learning the entire space pups history trying to figure out what markings should be on these 20ish guys xD Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive found some pictures of what might work but I don't know what is and isn't appropriate and would like to do a good job for the customer (Who is just starting the game and doesn't know much about the army either, just liked them a lot)
For reference its a:
Captain
2x Lieutenants
1x Standard Bearer (Any tips on a good standard layout would be awesome too)
10x Intercessors? (Basic Infantry Guys)
5x Hellblasters (Special Weapons guys)
3x Inceptors (Orbital Heavy Weapons teams?)

There is some good info in the 2nd ed. Codex but I don't think it's been carried on till now.
They used to have particular colours and patterns to nominate the type of warrior etc --- but this was before the awful "Wolf time" of recent years.

Primaris marines, or at least the initial batch, are 10,000 years old and date from shortly after the Horus Heresy. You could use HH era markings on them.
Another option since theyre bringing back Rogue Trader 1st edition ranks like lieutenant is to use RT era heraldry.

Er... no, they're not...
Having said that, given that the Primaris formations tend to follow something more akin to Legion formation rather than the traditional Bloodclaw/Grey Hunter/Long Fang organisation, going with the Legion or Rogue Trader heraldry isn't a bad idea.

From what I recall one shoulder is the sign of their wolf tribe and leader. The other is unduvidual markings inside the units.
Colour schemes is your designated rank. Red yellow is new pups, black yellow is veterans and red black is grey hunters? Long fangs have white black?
I don't remember. I also found a lot of this out after I started painting my space wolves some years ago. I do not remember now.
One of the forgworld books, the doom of 'eldar-name-here' had some nice SW in them. They had bran redmaw. Black wolf head with red nose on a white background. That white backround looked great in contrast with the rest of the colours if you paint it on every left shoulder. Really ties the army together.

Niiai has the colours correct.
Back in "the day", the basic Space Wolf models had squad markings on the right shoulder pauldron/pad --- a simple design broken down by colours as listed above.
Blood Claws: red/yellow
Grey Hunters: red/black
Wolf Guard: yellow/black
Long Fangs: white/black
You just created a design (lots of triangles and slashes, simple, rune-esque).

According to the reviews of the Dark Imperium novel, the initial batch of aspirants were recruited in secret from the original legion founding worlds shortly after the Horus Heresy and were put in stasis. Have you heard otherwise?

This is super awesome Id have never found those images on my own. Thank you for all the comments to Im really getting some insight into this project
For the right (pack marking) shoulder does each member of the unit get a unique pattern or is it the units marking that they share?

The pack markings are unique to the unit. Space Wolves are rather individualistic, though, so it wouldn't be at all out of character for pack members to customise the pack markings somewhat to suit themselves, so long as they are still identifiable as the same pack. Reading Dark Imperium now (which is painful... It's like a sales catalogue strung together with a hairline plot) and haven't come across that so far, and hadn't seen mention of it elsewhere.

Let me know if anything changes as I'm curious as to whether the reviews were correct (and I won't be reading it apparently until January when it gets to Barnes and Noble here in the US). As for the sales catalogue, I know how you feel. I read the three story Tau book that came out when the RIptide and Knight kits were released and the new RIptide was running rampant across Mulgath Bay and nothing could stop it from the existing model range in the story... that is until the Imperial Knight showed up! Ughh.... Automatically Appended Next Post: Requiet wrote:This is super awesome Id have never found those images on my own. I'm glad it was helpful. At least in the case of my images, the heraldry is a departure from typical 40k wolves but then again so are the primaris!
