Imagine a Penitent Engine that's been part of many cataclysmic wars and post apocalyptic landscapes. It now sits among its steel sisters left to rust, until someone unfortunate enough to bound to it rises it once again.

I'm painting a Penitent Engine as you can imagine. Unfortunately a metal one at that. I've done the prerequisite washing of the model and spray primed it with Leadbelcher.
After that I've built the model into subassemblies.
Following that I've painted the areas i wanted the tarnished gold/brass color like so. Right now it looks like basically a nice old patina statue with a person strapped to it.

Lastly I come to rust. I know the standard GW method is to use Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust for this effect but I'm wondering if there is anything else I might be able to do to achieve this effect? The best substitute I've been able to derive is to heavily dilute some Striland Mud with water and Lahmian Medium for the corrosion and just various shades of slightly differing orange for the ryza rust.

If there's anything anyone could tell me relating to this topic that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much, Austin.

I use a highly thinned oil wash of bright orange to represent rust in recesses. Oil washes are great for this because of their low surface tension the run in very fine cracks and leave no pigment at all in the other areas. Think black lining but with rust.
