How can I distinguish my genestealers? I play hivefleet leviathan, white, pruple, red.

Could I change the claws on one of the units to orange instead or red, or would that be bad?

You could either change up the colors of the claws slightly, or add a couple of extra markings on the heads of certain units.

For instance, you can added a couple of stripes or dots along the head above where the little bit of carapace is.

OR you can add a little bit of something to the base that's consistent for within a given unit (like, a red space marine helmet buried in the flock).

Adding in a new colour may throw off the look of things, but you could do purple mottled spots on the skin of one unit. Modelling wise, you could add something to a unit's bases that the other doesn't have, like one unit could all have a skull on each base.

Thanks. I have a tendency to ad things on top of each other making them better and better until I ruin them. I just really like the ide of yellow/orange claws on some genestealers.

Building on what others suggested, you could add a few stripes or patterns. Nature is a great source for inspiration.

On one unit you could try sculpting some purple scales on the shoulders.

Or all the bases of unit X have twisted bits of metal (plastic sheeting painted), rocks, vegetation or other small but noticeable things that you can ID but don't throw off the army's overall look.

EDIT: Just like Jin said above. D'oh.

Write something on the rim of the base. Maybe even just numbers or something.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I second this. Painting the rim of the base or have a marking on the back of it so you can tell what unit is what is a great way to mark them. I've done something similar with mine.

You could number them with markings on either side at the back of the head - one little dot, two little dots, etc.

Non organic markings, like painted base rims, or numbers sounds very bad in my mind.

I think some red to the shells will do good.
