I believe cult ambush specifies that it has to be a purely cult detachment to use cult ambush.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Oh well.

I supose the hive ships in the sky is a dead giveaway that something is up.

Yeah you can only use ambush if the detachment is all GSC. You can include regular Tyraninds in a different detachment though since they both share the TYRANID keyword.

If you have a pure GSC detachment and a Tyranid one then they keep the ambush. They only lose it if you mix them in the same detachment.

I did not know I could mix them in detachements.

One of the detachments are HQ + elite yes? Then I can take a broodlord from there and some genstealers and have the ambush?

That's a lot of HQ's though, considering tyranids have expensive HQ's. Can psykick powers affect each other detachments?

Other detachment? yes. But psychic powers, like most rules, usually work using keywords.

Tyranid psychic powers work on GSC units, as they have the Tyranid keyword, but I believe GSC powers require the GSC keyword.

You can mix GSC and Tyranid models in the same detachment. However, you can not Cult Ambush with ANY models in a detachment unless ALL models in the detachment have the Cult Ambush rule. So Broodlord HQ + 3 purestrain squads would disallow the purest rains from Cult Ambushing, for example, because the Broodlord lacks Cult Ambush.

Psychic powers are tricky. You have to check the keywords. So what detachment a model is in doesn't mean anything. The psychic power only asks for keywords. For example, the Might From Beyond power says it only affects Genestealer Cult infantry. This is true even if those models are in a different detachment, but could never affect Tyranid Genestealers because they lack the Genestealer Cult keyword.

On the flip side of the coin, Catalyst says that it affects a Tyranids unit. So this would, for example, work on a unit of GSC Purestrain Genestealers, because they still have the Tyranids keyword, even though they are not a Hive Fleet Tyranids unit.

Finally, take the Swarmlord's double move ability. This says that a unit must be a Hive Fleet unit, which GSC Purestrain Genestealers are not, so it would not work on them.

Essentially, it's a case by case basis. Read the rules carefully.
