Somewhere in south-central England.

Here's the review I wrote of the novel last year.

In the near future the world is in the grip of a long term depression caused by the end of the era of cheap energy, made worse by long term environmental degradation caused by the era of cheap energy, everything leading to famine, crime and war.

Most people live in miserable “stacks”, vertical trailer parks built upwards to save space, get by on welfare and miserable jobs, and spend as much time as they can afford in the OASIS cyberspace virtual reality system that has in effect replaced the Internet and WWW. A few lucky people have jobs as corporate drones with companies like the IOI media giant.

OASIS was created by a genius games programmer called James Halliday, who became hyper rich as a result. When he dies in 2040, his will leaves his entire fortune and control of the OASIS company to whoever manages to solve a series of elaborate riddles and tests based on his love of 1980s nerd culture -- films, videogames and comics, and so on. The whole contest is based in OASIS and the prize is the ultimate “easter egg”. The people who take up this challenge become known as egg hunters, or “gunters” for short.

Five years later no-one has even cracked the first riddle. A 17-year-old called Wade Watts, or Parzival inside OASIS, has been preparing to enter the contest. WIth a sudden brainwave he solves the first clue, and finds himself pitched against other solo gunters, clans, and the IOI corporation, which has violated the spirit though not the letter of the contest rules by creating a massive “Oology” organisation to gain control of OASIS.

The rest of the book is Parzival’s quest for the egg, and his relationships with some of the other solo gunters. It reads like a boy’s teen/crossover fiction based on video games and nerd movies and TV of the 1980s, which is great fun for people like me who grew up in that era. For instance I played most of the games that Parzival has to master for his quest.

It’s far from great literature, but it’s a good fun, fast read that rolls along at a cracking pace, and will appeal to anyone with an interest in ancient or modern video games.

Unsurprisingly, it has already been optioned for a film script. Emphasis added later.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I see too much flashy gak that wasn't in the book.

I'm guessing the big guy with the Halo gun and monster truck is supposed to be Aech.

Having grown up in the 80's, I absolutely loved this book.

Hopefully the movie can pull it all off too - and I hope that somehow the movie can use ALL of the stuff in the book - especially the critical stuff, like the AD&D parts!

Aye, I liked the book, though it was really rather depressing. This looks a bit more fun. It appears that they've simplified the plot a little, but that's to be expected. With Spielberg on board they've managed to get a good few licenses involved, and hey, if Pixels can get Pacman I wonder if they'll include that particular scene in the film? Hmn, maybe even just Joust? I can picture there being a lot cut, so let's hope for an extended edition for more references.

I dont recall a car chase scene with huge wrecking balls coming out of the sky,..

However, I ADORED the book, and managed to get my Teen Daughter into it.. to the point where she bookmarked sections of the book as a "to do" list ... and when she did them.. remarked :Leveled Up Dad!!

(like memorizing Dialogue from the movie, learning Joust, etc)

I loved the book and I wonder if they can fit it all into 2 hours: while it's not a particularly long book, it does seem like it's gonna be a tight fit and would have been a better fit for a single 10 episode limited run on Netflix or something.

I also worry about licensing concerns, although I did see Freddy and Harley. I don't remember a giant scorpion, though. I am going to be very sad if I don't see

Yeah, I think the final act will be surprisingly disappointing, as I doubt they'll have all them giant robots.

Also kinda sad that they're not using a default skin for the suxers while in Oasis, though I could be misremembering things again.

I grew up in the 80s ... but I don't know what I was doing; mustve been out playing on my bike, because I remember most of the "pop culture" stuff, but it's all just ... OK.

As for the licensing, the Empire podcast did suggest that Steven Spielberg was literally the only person who could have made this, as he managed to get round the rights issues with a few personal phonecalls.

That version of the iron man is the 1999 film version, though, isn't it? If one were to be pedantic, that is

I think he means IRON GIANT which did not come out until the late 90's, so that's a bit different right there...

Pretty sure that the Oasis contains elements of all kinds of pop-culture, not just the 80s.

Oh, yeah. That make sense.

Well, RP1 makes numerous references to Everquest, one of it's spiritual liege forebears, and that didn't come out until 1999.

Was very stoked to see the Iron Giant.

They may have simply removed a huge amount of the story to condense it into a series of video game sequences.

I didn't really enjoy the book all that much. I enjoyed its appreciation for my childhood, but I never quite got past the fact that OASIS seemed like a pretty miserable game. I get that it just has to be less miserable than reality, but mass acceptance of permadeath in games seemed questionable to me.

Mostly though, I just didn't care much for most of the quest for the third key. I liked the ending well enough, but that whole section didn't feel like it new what kind of sci-fi/dystopia it wanted to be. I suspect the trailer is essentially a montage of that section, fwiw, which might just skip it over and end up being a better version overall. There's really only like 3-4 essential plot points in the whole thing, so outside of purists, I think for most people it will be a better film than book.

The Iron Man is the original name for the book that The Iron Giant is the film of. It's what the Black Sabbath song is about.

Yes, right.

I find the movie version to be pretty ace, whereas the book...is OK.

Anyway, I'm (fairly) confident that the movie version of READY PLAYER ONE will be OK too.

I think Iron Giant works/sounds better anyway, especially for the direction the movie too with it all.

I always really wanted a sequel to that movie, but it didn't do well enough (at the time) to warrant it, unfortunately.

Glad to hear that he's going to figure prominently in this movie though!

Unlike a lot of the posters in this thread this is the first I've even heard of the story. The trailer makes it look pretty interesting, and it should be a good visual action flick. Maybe I would enjoy it more since I have no prior expectations.

You might at that - but I'd still highly recommend the book, especially if you grew up in the 80's or 90's!

A book written by the great Ted Hughes no less!

Also, there was a sequel to the book, The Iron Woman, but that's not made it to screen as yet.
