So, I'm going to be starting a new army in AoS, since I'd like to add some variety to my current roster, which only consists of Seraphon rn, and I'm strongly considering beastmen. Firstly, however I have some questions. 1. How does a warherd list, i.e. Bullgor stampede and the like, measure up against other similar low model count, high wound heavyweight lists, like Beastclaw or Gutbuster ogres? 2. What are the most competitive beastman lists right now? From what research I've done, the big strategies seem to be either a big bullgor stampede or big blobs of gors and ungors buffed by our heroes, but I'd like to hear all your opinions on it. 3. How competitive are pure beastman armies rn? The general consensus on them seems to be that they're quite strong, but they've not won any tournaments that I'm aware of, so are they weaker then everyone says or just ignored? 4. How effective are our special named characters? They aren't terribly expensive online for the most part, with the exception of Gorthor, but I want to make sure they'd all have at least some use before I go to the effort of getting them on ebay and the like. 5. How effective would you all say an all, or at least majority, centigor force would be? I probably wouldn't run them as my main army, but the idea of a big army of centigors led by Ghorros amuses me, and I'm curious about how viable it would be.

Beastmen are in a good spot right now, AoS tournaments are dominated by a narrow subset of pure cheese lists right now so there's nothing to worry about if an ay doesn't show up. Bullgor stampede is also a really strong build to go with. I wouldn't worry too much about what is competitive and instead just build out things out piece by piece to see what you like.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Hm, good to know, thanks. As a couple more additions to my earlier questions, does anyone know if the Bullgor stampede is technically legal? I can't help but note that it requires Minotaurs, not Bullgors, even if they're the same model. Finally, as far as our formations go, like wildstalker Brayherd, can we replace the characters with named characters, like Malagor for the Great Bray Shaman and Gorthor for the Beastlord?

I'm not really familiar with those specific formations, but look at the way the units are listed in the battalion composition. If the name of the unit is in bold, it is referring to a keyword. Any model with that keyword will fit the requirement. If the unit is not in bold, it is referring to a specific unit. Only the warscroll with that name can be used.

This mostly lands true.

I've run the Bullgor a couple times and even if you forget your bonus attacks from the formation you do so much dmg it's crazy. I run mine MSU 1000 points doubled with Runeblades.

The Brayherd part themselves can do crazy board control but you have a LOT of bodies to do this. also a pair of Jabberslythes' really benefit Brayherds.

There are lots of nice tricks you can do/learn too. Daemonic Power from a Slaves of Darkness sorcerer is good for Bullgors as is the Plague Priest so you get +1 to wound.

Good to know about the sorcerer and the plague priest, thanks. The main reason I'm wondering about the effectiveness of the Bullgor Stampede is because we have a player with a big Gutbuster Wartribe force, and I'm wondering whether a Bullgor stampede could go toe to toe with them or not at 2000 pts, or if I'd be better off trying to flood them with wounds with a Brayherd. I'm probably going to to build a big force of both anyways, but I'm curious for this particular instance.

Bullgor stampede would be a good match for the gutbuster wartribe at 2k.
