Hello DakkaDakka
My name is Joe and love been away for a while. I first got into 40k in the late 80's. The old Rouge Trader days. I never became much of a player but I really got into the painting side of the hobby. I was quite active for many years. A long time subscriber to White Dwarf, I became disillusioned in the 2000's. It all started to seem like a money grab. The magazine was more of a advertisement and at some point they stoped covering the Golden Daemon awards. That's when I stopped my subscription. The models started to look more and more toy like. Then the Ultramarines movie came out. And I was done. I still painted my stuff occasionally but as my family was growing I had less and less time. It all finally got shelved in the garage. I had long since stoped following GW by that point and my only interest was what Forge World was putting out and the Black Library novels. Horus Heresy in particular. The other day I was looking at the new Sisters of Silence model from Forge World and somehow I thought to check out the GW site. Wow. A lot has changed. Primarch resurection. The imperium cut in half. New XL marines. It took me all night on the wikis trying to figure it out. I'm still not sure what to think. But it has sparked a fire. I've decided to bust out the paints next month while the wife and kids are out of town. I'll have the house to myself for a week and I'm going to take over the living room with a painting table. I've got a FW super heavy and a few other tanks I'm going to focus on. Maybe try my airbrush out. I'm not sure how far I'll take it. I'm still not happy with the way GW handled things but 40k is in my blood. I'll never be able to completely turn my back on it. Anyway, there's my introduction. Peace out. Joe.

Welcome back, I too have returned from the void. The last time I did anything was about 7 years ago... and suddenly stopped for no real reason.

Then new 8th edition core rules are very simple and straight forward, and Free!?!

Now, I suddenly started again and every one is looking at me like I am crazy all over again...

GamesWorkshop may be money hogs, but that is the silver lining in disguise of how they have stayed in business for this long I guess...

The new rules are free? Is that a download off their site? That's cool. I've never minded the prices as long as the product was top rate. One reason I Like Forge World.

We are in the same boat, I left off with the 4th/5th edition cross over era as well.

I have never actually tried 6th or 7th to be honest, but I like how 8th has made things simple again.

Back in the 4th/5th day, it seemed like my friends and I would roll dice, then spend the next 10 - 15 minutes flipping through the rule book trying to decided what the dice roll meant, or what really just happened, or measure again to make sure then compare the roll to a chart to determine outcome etc etc.

Now along comes 8th edition, where we got a free 15 page core rule book and individual "Index" character cards.... the game is now so simple while still holding on to Games-Workshop complexity that it is beautiful.

Great to have you back in the hobby. I got a similar story. Lots of us do actually. You should find some friends on dakka.

I think coming to DakkaDakka as I am re entering the hobby is a real unexpected treat. I've been on some of the other 40k community forums in years past and they are all less than positive. I won't get into specifics but there is a much different feeling here. I'm looking foreword to being part of the discussions.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Dakka is a broad and deep community, with plenty of grumps and malcontents, but no shortage of love for the hobby. You'll find teenagers that just started, guys that have played a half dozen editions, tournament players and basement gamers, and everything in between. As a rule, the bigger and more general a thread is, the more likely nastiness will develop, but dig a bit deeper and you will see support and discussion on every facet of the hobby.

Welcome back!
