Deployment
Spoiler:

Can't really tell from the pictures, but damn near everything is out of LOS of everything else. Orks win the roll and choose to go first.

Initial Thoughts
Spoiler:

Orks:
Bikes get a bad rap (and I mostly agree), so I wanted to try them out with Stormboyz as a screening unit to protect them from enemy shooting. So wasn't too happy to see those Whirlwinds with Capt. Reroll hiding in the corner. Stormboyz take up enough space that they should be able to corner the Stormtalon, which will give my Tankbustas breathing room to get out and hunt those tough Ironclads down. This list doesn't have any backfield campers so I'll put my objectives closer to the midfield. Bikes and Stormboyz are fast enough that they can make it back if I get too far upfield.

Marines:
The plan here is to move up first with bikes with the Ironclad coming up behind, all the while my tanks sit in the corner and shoot up his army. Tacticals hold the backfield objective while LSS Scouts can zoom in and take the other two. Talon brings the dakka.

Turn 1 Orks
Spoiler:

Move up and advance everything. No shooting to be had.

Turn 1 Marines
Spoiler:

Bikes, Dreads, Stormtalon, and LSSessess move up to get into firing position on the trukks.

One bike squad drops 7 Stormboyz with shooting. Pred kills 3 bikes. Ironclad and a WW put 4 wounds on one Trukk. Stormtalon and other Bikes put 9w on the other Trukk. Trukk gets boxcars on its saves from the last WW to stay alive

Bikes and Ironclad charge a 30 man Stormboy squad, 1 bike eats it to Overwatch. Bikes kill only 1 Stormboy!, Ironclad kills 2. Stormboyz smack down 4 bikes in return. 1 Bike actually knows fear and rides right off the board.

2nd Bike squad charges the healthy Trukk. Only 1w and Trukk makes the save.

Not a great day for SM bikes and one of the strangest combats I've ever seen.

Turn 2 Orks

Spoiler:

The Stormtalon put itself out there to get at those Trukks, so one of the 30 man Stormboyz squads moves in, smelling blood...or oil?

Both squads of Tankbustas abandon their flaming Trukks, one squad hopping up onto the roof of the center building and the other moving past the big scrum of Stormboyz, Bikes, and the Ironclad, hoping to get a bead on the 2nd Ironclad but are unsuccessful.

Zhad, the KFF mek, and a squad of Bikers move up to help the Trukk being smacked up by SM bikes.

The 20 man Stormboy squad moves over to the Tower objective, while the 2nd Warbikers squad and BC boss move along the table edge past the same tower.

The Buggy comes in along the back corner, gunning for the lonely tactical squad guarding the objective.

Shooting Zhad and the Stormboyz takes 2W from the Stormtalon. Tankbustas take 6W off a LSS. Marines use 1CP to reroll an armor save here to keep it from dying. Buggy kills 1 Tac marine.

Stormboyz charge the Stormtalon and lose 4 to overwatch. Zhad, KFF Mek, and a Warbiker squad charge the Trukk fighting SM bikes.

The left side Bikers, fearing the whirlwinds will be bored shooting empty Trukks, decide to help out the Stormboyz fighting the Bikes and Ironclad. They make the long charge, but leave the Biker Boss behind.

The ground bound Tankbustas, fearing the same and unable to get a bead on either the unengaged Ironclad or the LSSeseses, turn around and charge into the back of the Ironclad/Bike/Stormboy/More Bike mess.

Stormboyz take 6W off the Stormtalon. SM bikes go -2CP to swing at the Ork bikes but whiff. Zhad kills 4 SM bikes.

In the giant scrum, 1 SM bike dies and 1W on the Ironclad. 2 Ork Bikes, 1 Tankbusta, and 2 Stormboyz die in return. This could take a while.

Turn 2 Marines
Spoiler:

Not much moving to be had. The Stormtalon falls back. The back Tactical Squad shuffles a bit to get in double tap range of the Buggy, while one of the LSS moves back to help. The middle Tactical Squad scrambles up the wall of the center building to double tap the Tankbustas. The Assault Marines descend from the sky onto the top of a ramshackle tower but don't fall through the roof somehow.

Tacs take 2W off the Buggy. A LSS finally brings down the almost dead Trukk for FIRST BLOOD

The Predator is bored and sad until it remembers that facings and fire arcs don't matter and so blows the everloving Mork (or possibly Gork) out of the Buggy.

Bike Captain helps his Bike bros fighting the Trukk/Zhad/Warbikers, but Zhad and Cap are not in range of each other. The rooftop Tacticals shoot 2 Tankbustas then charge, losing 2 to overwatch. This is probably the best Tankbusta shooting of the match...

Assault marines pop some shots off at the 20 man Stormboy squad, killing 2, but otherwise chill on the strongest corrugated steel roof in the galaxy.

Bike Capt whiffs hard, Roof Tacs kill 1 Tankbusta. Ironclad kills 1 Warbiker.

In the Scrum that Never Ends, 1 Ork Warbiker and a Tankbusta die. The dumbass running the Ork army forgets to strike back here.

Orks Turn 3

Spoiler:

The lone Bike Boss has a kunnin' plan. Get over to where those weedy Buggy gits got blowed up and take out those few beakies himself.

The 30 man Stormboyz decide that chasing the Stormtalon is boring (and not because it's on a rooftop they can't assault it) and push onwards toward tank corner. Likewise the 20ish man squad moves toward the tower objective out of bolt pistol range of the Assault Marines.

20 SB shoot at the Stormtalon. Marines use 1CP to reroll an armor save and 1W is lost. Can't kill the damn thing, but it's down to Ork shooting level now. Kunnin' Bike Boss shoots the LSS sitting behind the Tac squad and misses in a kunnin' manner.

The open 30 Stormboyz make the charge on the Predator. 1CP is used to reroll one charge die.

On to combat, Roof Tankbustas kill 1 Tac Marine, after Marines make 5 saves. Bike Captain interrupts (aren't they just rude gits today) and kills 3 Warbikers. Kunnin' Biker Boss makes the charge on the Tac Marines and kills 2. In Bikes vs Ironclad, 4W to Ironclad and 2 Warbikers die. 1 runs off later.

The Eternal Scrum stays eternal as Orks do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Zhad, leading by example, also does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, but will be forgiven later. Tankbustas in the scrum really should have fallen back this turn.

Marines Turn 3
Spoiler:

.
Both Scout Squads disembark, the Stormtalon hovers. Assault Marines hop off their roof. Capt Reroll decides to go help his tank bro out. Backfield LSS hops up to the roof, ready to shoot any Ork that dares to win combat.

Since the 20ish Stormboy squad is the only unengaged unit left of the field, everything unloads on them. Assault Marines, Scout squad, Stormtalon, both WW, the LSS. In the end there is only 1! (17 boyz die) Orks would later spend 2CP so the Nob would autopass morale.

Back to the slapfest, solo Ironclad finishes off the Warbikers. Bike Cap kills 2 more Warbikers and puts a wound on the Nob. Tac squad does 1W to Kunnin' Bike Boss, Scouts rush in to help by giving Kunnin' Biker Boss a nice breeze.

Stormboyz put 2W on Capt Reroll and 1W on the Predator. Zhad wakes up and slaps down the remaining SM bikes, positioning himself for hawt Warlord on Warlord action next turn.

Orks Turn 4
Spoiler:

Moving and shooting, who needs those?

20 Stormboy Nob, traumatized by the loss of his whole squad, charges into the Assault Marine flamer and dies like a moron. The Trukk charges the Scout squad near the objective.

Zhad charges into Capt Bike and reminds his Boyz that they're supposed to be good in assault. Capt. Bike drops for SLAY THE WARLORD. Kunnin' Biker Boss repays the Scouts for cooling him off by killing 3, Scouts fan back for 1W.

In the Scrum that Never Ends, the Ironclad wipes out the Tankbustas, 4W are done to Ironclad in turn.

In the Scrum that Never Ends on the rooftop, Tankbustas whiff on the Tacs.

In the back corner, Stormboyz do 2W to Capt Reroll.

Marines Turn 4
Spoiler:

Assault Marines head over to the Eternal Scrum trying to end it finally (Guess what). Rooftop Tacs fall back to the edge of the roof. The free Ironclad shifts near the Objective trying to get a bead on the bike HQs.

With the HQs open, the KFF Mek is killed with some effort and Zhad takes 3W.

Assault Marines charge into the Scrum, killing 7 Stormboyz between them and the Ironclad. 2 Assault Marines eat it in return.. Capt Reroll Kills 2 Stormboyz, at the cost of his life.

Kunnin' Bike Boss kills the Scouts, more importantly the Trukk kills a Scout! Beep, beep imma Jeep.

Orks Turn 5
Spoiler:

Ermagerd, Tankbustas are finally able to shoot at something. The light up the LSS on the roof near the objective. LSS goes TEEHEE.

The lone Warbiker Nob tired of the Tankbusta's nonsense shoots down the LSS for them.

On to Combat, Kunnin' Biker Boss kills the last Tac Marine and is alone at the objective, JUST AS PLANNED.

Zhad charges the Ironclad near the other objective and brings the wood. Why is Zhad my entire army? The Predator takes 1W and makes 8 saves...

The Eternal Scrum is OVER. The Stormboy Nob drops the Ironclad and the rest of the boyz drop 2 Assault Marines. Oh wait, there's 1 Assault Marine left.

Luckily Eternal Scrum 2: Tankbusta Boogaloo is back on as they charge the roof Tacs again. Hey look, they whiff.

Marines Turn 5

Spoiler:

Whirlwinds unload on Zhad, he takes 2W after some champ saves. The Stormtalon tries to clear off the objective, splitting the Heavy Bolters onto the Warbiker Nob and Asscan onto Zhad. Zhad makes his saves, and after a 1CP reroll, so does the Nob

The Fight Phase is renamed the Nap Phase this turn. Not a damn thing happens.

Orks Turn 6

Spoiler:

We're at a Tie right now, but I think Orks can pull it off if we the game goes on. AND IT DOES.

Zhad chill on the center objective while the Warbiker Nob heads over to those naughty Whirlwinds. Both shoot at the Stormtalon and scrape 1W off.

Zhad decides to risk the hovering Stormtalon's overwatch to try and finish the stubborn thing off. He takes 2W, and saves them both!. Hero Warbiker Nob is able to charge a Whirlwind off 'Ere We Go and also makes his clutch save.

Zhad easily drops that goddamn bird and continues to chill out near the objective. Eternal Scrum boyz kill off the last Assault Marine and consolidate towards the tower Objective, about an inch short

Stormboyz put 3W on the Predator. Scouts slap the Trukk for 1W.

Marines Turn 6
Spoiler:

Orks couldn't close the deal, but I really need the game to end after this turn or I'm done.

LSS shoots down 2 Stormboyz, Predator runs over 1 Stormboy because why the hell not, and Eternal Rooftop Scrum stays eternal, Tankbustas can't drop the last Tac.

Orks Turn 7
Spoiler:

My Stormboyz are bearing down on the Tower objective, ready to finish this. Roll to continue the game and....

GAME OVER

Afterword
Spoiler:

Orks:
What a slugfest. Longest 8th game I've had yet by far. Really hate having Tankbustas and Warbikers being in combat but staying out would have meant leaving them exposed to the Whirlwinds and Stormtalon. Those Ironclads are dead 'ard. SM did a good job utilizing the terrain to limit the number of boyz I could bring into combat. Nobs rolled like donkeys didn't help much. If the Whirlwinds hadn't been around I think the Warbikers would have performed better in their primary role (shooting) using the Stormboyz as a screen against plasma. Nobs rolling like donkeys contributed to combats taking waaaaaaay too long. Zhad is a friggin hero.

Marines:

It was sloppy, but the basic plan laid out in the beginning pretty much worked out, even if it was cut really close. If this had gone to Turn 7 I would have been toast. Whirlwinds weren't mind blowing, but put out solid damage considering they weren't an ideal loadout against Orks. LSS were solid performers both as transports and for shooting. Ironclads didn't have any ideal targets, but were durable as hell and were reliably dropping 3-4 dudes a turn in combat, great value with the recent price drop. Gambling the Stormtalon early paid off this time, but probably shouldn't be so aggresive with it, the amount of dakka it contributed was well worth the points. Thank the Emprah for 3+ saves!

Food for thought: Zagstruk is shockingly good this edition (or, at minimum, shockingly improved, which isn't saying much), especially when used with a mess o' stormboyz. He's basically a warboss with a jetpack (which still needs to be an option), reasonably priced, and nearby stormboyz just ignore morale. Has a 5+ FNP to boot.

Yeah, he's something I need to keep in mind the next time I go Stormboy heavy. Autopassing morale is probably worth the points alone.

So I take it the Imperial Player got to pick deployment style? Looks like you guys are deployed with the 6' table length between you.

he's a lot of points though for only 2 pk lite atks. But there is an ideal sweet spot where he makes having swarms of stormboys better. I just don't know where that it maybe 50+ boys.

Mission and deployment were both rolled for. Don't have my book handy, but it was deployment type #1 (short table edges and I think 18" away from each other at the closest point)

Two squads of 30 is what I was thinking, not sure I'd bother with smaller squads. Although using a BC instead of PK on the Nob would recoup some of the extra cost.
