Hi All,

Long time lurker doing my first post...
I have recently been drawn in to paint and (eventually) play 40k after over a decade of on and off casual painting and hoarding random minis that look interesting to me.
I am a fan of the Death Guard that came out of the latest edition and thought I would try (for the first time ever) to paint up a playable force.

My goal was to paint to tabletop (or above) standard and eventually get a few games in once the basic force is painted.

I am hoping to get some feedback on what works for my current colour scheme and what areas could use some improvement.
I have a fair amount of Death Guard to paint and would like to use this forum post as a way to try and improve my painting.

My paint scheme for the force is bone armour with royal purple.
I do want to try out some weathering powder when the order eventually arrives at my door.

So here we go.

Lord of Contagion:

Noxious Blightbringer:

Malignant Plaguecaster:

Plague Marines 1-3:

Plague Marines 4-6:

Plague Marines 7-9:

Foetid Bloat-Drone:

So that's all I have managed to paint in the time since the release of Dark Imperium.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my post.
Please don't hold back on the feedback... I want to improve.

Many thanks,

Spouth

These look fantastic, and definitely way above "tabletop".

Don't know if it's the photos but that purple looks super deep. I'm almost inclined to say a bit too deep. Maybe mute it down just a touch to better blend in with the browns?

Yep, excellent stuff. I've been really off-put by the GW paint scheme for their Deathguard, particularly the pinks/purples, but the purple works well with the bone/creme colours here. Beautiful cohesive force, well done. Nice fix on the sorcerer as well.

I love em the way they are. If you want a little CC all I can say is highlight the metal a bone/ horns a little more. Otherwise they are awesome as is.

I don't know why but your these Death Guard give off kind of a retro feel, loving it. I think they will stand out quite nicely on the tabletop.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

Very nice. Kudos on not doing the stereotypical green.

Excellent!! Can you list your colours used; particularly the purple? The only thing i would consider is some small touches of rust?

Greetings Spouth, Your paint work is fantastic! I am a fan of bone white &/or flat white with a black wash looking Death Guard Plague Marines.

The use of the secondary colors green & purple makes Your Force look great!

I like the use of blended light blue for the helmet lenses.

All the brush work is neat & crisp. You paid close attention to detail in My humble opinion.

Awesome stuff, like the look being unique compared to some some nurgle manifestations.

Life is like a box of chocolates. A cheap, thoughtless and perfunctory gift nobody ever asked for. Unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So you're stuck with this undefinable whipped mint crap that you mindlessly wolf down because there's nothing left to drink. Sure once in a while there's a peanut butter cup or a English toffee, but they're gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. So you end up with nothing but broken bits of hardened jelly and teeth shattering nuts. If you're desperate enough to eat those all you've got left is a. An empty box, filled with useless brown paper wrappers.

Wow. Thank you for your feedback everyone!
I honestly wasn't expecting such a positive response given the amazing work that is posted here daily.

@Weazel: I think it is the photo that makes it look so deep. It does stand out from the model on the tabletop (read: my shelf) but I can test out a more muted purple on my next Plague Marine. If it looks better it isn't difficult to modify the other minis to match.

@Elbows: Bone and Purple has always been a favorite colour combination of mine. I was a little worried people would hate the purple after the negative response to the Mortarion leaked picture.
Thanks for the compliment on the sorcerer... I really am not a fan of the original face.

@Sammoth: I will definitely look at adding some highlights to the metal and spike areas. I agree that the metals look a bit flat on the larger pictures.

@Cothonian: Thanks. I think the retro feel might come from the colour scheme looking closer to the 30k Death Guard than the current green 40k style.

@winterdyne: Cheers. I wanted to do something a little different. Hopefully they stand out when I eventually get them in to a game.

@S.e.r.a.p.h.i.m: Sure can.
Armour: Army painter bone spray, Washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade and Edge highlighted with Reaper Graveyard Bone
Purple: Vallejo Violet for the base colour, Washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade, then a mix of Violet and Vallejo Blue violet, then edge highlighting with Blue Violet.
As you might have guessed I lean pretty heavily on the Agrax Earthshade on these models...
If you are interested in a full breakdown of my colours I can happily provide it when I get home from work.

Rust is something I would like to try... I just have no idea how to make nice looking rust so I might just experiment with Typhus Corrosion and some drybrushed orange.
If you, or anyone else, have a nice recipe for rust I would love to hear it.

@darkstar6783: Thank you very much for all the compliments. It really adds to my motivation to get more stuff painted.

@spincr: Thanks. I wanted it to look unique while still having a nurgley feel to it.

@Icelord: The model was base coated in Army painter bone spray, Washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade and Edge highlighted with Reaper Graveyard Bone.
You can also add in a step to drybrush the model with white after the basecoat to add more depth but I found I was getting a nice enough result with the spray+wash+edge combo.

EDIT: My copy+paste didn't work as intended and I missed some of my reply text. Re-added with full replies.

Yes, very, very nice. I like what you did with the plague casters face - I'm planning something similar.

Did you sculpt the chain mail or snip it off something else?

Well it looks really sharp! Did you do all the armor then go back to do the detail or did you base coat the colors then wash the whole thing?

I used one of the heads from the Putrid Blightkings box.
The head comes with stag horns but i just snipped them off and touched it up with a little greenstuff.

I do all the base colours and then entirely coat the model in earthshade. I find it brings everything together nicely and gives the model a smoother tone then I could probably do with a brush.

I for one love the bright vibrant purple contrast to the armor palate. I think it works very well. Love the paint job all around wish I could replicate that level of skill.

@S.e.r.a.p.h.i.m: I have Typus but no Ryza. I'll see if i can pick some up or play around with the paint I have.

@JamesY: Thank you. I wanted them to look corrupted but still have a vibrant colour scheme that "pops" on the tabletop.

@Tsilber: You are too kind Tsilber. I am still trying to get back into painting and I doubt I could handle the requirements of commission painting. Thank you very much for the compliment and the offer.

@FeindusMaximus: Cheers. I am glad you like it!

@Rezyn: The majority of the paint job is covered by the Army Painter Bone Basecoat + Agrax Earthshade wash. I am sure you could achieve the same quality

@Desubot: Thanks. The plan is to make them stand out without looking rediculous.
