Hey everyone I'm new to Dakka Dakka and was wondering if someone could help answer a couple model questions I had. I recently picked up a huge army of chaos space marines and started to strip the paint off them with some Super Clean in my ultrasonic cleaner. So after the first initial models coming out clean I started to run into this problem https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/896455-Metal%20Discoloration%3F.html Will this discoloration affect painting? The seemingly unclean model on the left seems more coarse to the touch then the one on the right. Any answers would be appreciated!

Hi there. Welcome to Dakka.

As intros go, you might want to get this post moved. The Painting and Modelling thread is a better place for questions like yours. I don't have an answer for you, but others will.

In short, won't affect it at all. I've seen this happen all over the place - including perhaps half of my rather large 2nd ed. rescued Eldar army. No rhyme or reason that I can pinpoint. Some minis come out dark grey, some come out shining pewter/white metal.

It will have zero impact on the painting of the miniature (assuming you prime it like a normal person would).

It has to do with the primer I've found.
It happens to metal, plastic, or resin. The ultrasonic cleaner is somehow getting the actual layer of paint off but it 'stains' the model itself. You can prime and paint over it with no issue, but the first few times it really concerned me.

Its just an oxide layer

its nothing to worry about.

as long as it isnt pure lead which only REALLY old models are it wont be a problem.

I've repainted plenty of minis where that occurred and so far I haven't had any problems.

Yeah, I run into it a lot with metal models even though I just soak my stuff in Simple Green for 3-4 days, rather than use an ultrasonic cleaner.

Never had any problems priming them and repainting. It's just a discoloration.

I agree with everyone else, throw a layer of primer on them and youll forget which one was stained
