I've seen /tg/ take huge gaks on AoS, but divorcing it entirely from Fantasy and the lore clusterfeth it created, how is it mechanically?

It's not bad. It has some issues, mainly due to being a lot simpler than the new 40k (which seems to have taken what AOS does and improve on it a lot), but a lot of the issues stems from being able to easily kill characters (which means armies that rely on characters for synergy get screwed) and because you can spam mortal wounds in some armies, plus rolling for initiative every round means a nasty army can be even nastier when they get to go twice before you can really do anything to them.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.
