I'll be spending this winter in Romania, on the Black Sea coast.
Honestly, I know very little of the country. My travel opportunities won't be extensive, but I will have the occasional weekend, and might be able to get a tour or two.
Any suggestions? What's the local cuisine like?

Constanta is a dump, you can see the usual sights in half a day tops, but there are nice seaside resorts up and down the coast (shame you'll be there in the winter rather than summer). Being American I assume you like fishing? The Danube Delta is a prime spot for fishing, and you can get boat trips with English-speaking guides in Tulcea (which also isn't the prettiest place to visit). A bit inland you can sample some decent wines if you're into that, too.
The pretty parts of Bulgaria will be closer to you than the pretty parts of Romania, so if you have access to a car you can drive to Veliko Tarnovo and other places.
Depending on your specific interests I can come up with something else.
