Subject: What's happening in Australia? Deputy PM unmasked as a New Zealander!
I've never seen anything like this before in my life! Usually, when politicians are brought down it's drugs, prostitutes, stealing public funds, spying for the Soviets etc etc
but this?
Couldn't they have done background checks on this guy before he ran for office? Or was appointed Deputy PM?
They're saying it could bring down the government!
Months ago, on a similar thread, I asked if Australia was turning into a banana republic?

It's the whole loyalty thing: you can't be the servant of two masters, and it's against the Australian constitution or something.

An Australian cabinet minister is stepping down from his position after discovering he was made a dual Italian citizen without his knowledge.
Resources minister Matt Canavan is the third Australian politician in two weeks to fall victim to the country's little-known dual citizenship clause, after two Greens party senators resigned earlier in July.

This is what I' talking about. I refuse to believe that the Australians are so incompetent to not do background checks. These politicians must have lied about this or something.
Politicians lying is not exactly headline news, but this is turning into a shambles.

From what I understand from Radio 4 it's not that the Australian constitution says you can't have duel nationality, but that it is very vaguely worded saying you can't have two nationalities.
Duel nationality is a conscious choice to do with having legal citizenship, and normally passports for (or at least having had) both countries.
This seems to be people who's parents or grandparents were nationals of those countries and the people in question could apply for citizenship freely due to the heritage and background rules in those countries. Which could cause lots of issues given that, from my understanding, it effectively bans anyone with Jewish heritage from the Australian government as the Israeli government takes the view that anyone ethnically Jewish should can apply for Israeli citizenship.

You'll find most countries have rules regarding dual citizenship and public office.
I heard about this case. It seems to have been a case of the dude in question not being aware this was a rule and other people not checking/being aware as well.

How strange. In the U.K. You don't even need to be a British citizen to be elected to parliament. Citizens of Commonwealth countries and the Republic of Ireland can also stand for election.

The ironic thing is it comes after a few members of opposing parties stepped down for the same reasons. I'm an interview someone asked if he was a dual citizen and he said he was Australian and that 'Everyone has had that talk with their parents'.
Whoops.

There is a whole Kiwi vs Aussie rivalry going on also. They rib each other rotten and its fun to watch, they have always had each other back though, zero bad blood.
Nevertheless this incident will be met by peals of laughter in New Zealand methinks. Maybe some Dakka Kiwi's (whoever they are) can shed more light on how its being taken

There's a box they tick on the paperwork they fill out when they stand for office. They're not all checked prior to elections as there just isn't time to vet everybody. Instead, they largely just take people's word for it that they've filled out the paperwork correctly and let the media find anything dodgy later on.
The New Zealand thing is somewhat understandable, given that you apparently count as a New Zealand citizen regardless of where you were born so long as at least one of your parents was a New Zealand citizen. If you were born in Australia, and had lived your whole life in Australia, there would be no particular reason for you to actually be aware of that fact. I know I certainly don't bother to keep up with the citizenship requirements of foreign countries.

The whole dual citizenship is quite tricky, as different countries have different procedures, and different clauses and ways in which you can get dual citizenship. Some will even grant it automatically, and may not even tell you about it, others allow someone to get it for you on your behalf. And that is before you get into the bureaucracies tied up around it.

For the same reason Canada and Mexico are separate countries to the USA?
Only until the tank divisions get there...heh heh oh crap the secret is out hey look over there!
I should be clear, I thought Australia/New Zealand/Tanzania were the same overall nation. Were they settled by different countries? I thought New Zealand used Australia to train their Sarauker terror troops.

That and the fact that New Zealand is over a thousand miles away from Australia.
And? Thats just my drive to the local grocery.

Tanzania is in Africa.
If you mean Tasmania, that's a state of Australia, although we tend to ignore them whenever possible. It's pretty, but aside from apples and cider, not really particularly useful
So far as using Australia to train troops... just about everybody does that.

This was the dumbest thing I had read today, until Frazz posted anyway.
Oz, lets cut a deal; we will take this bloke and you can have Winston Peters, we will even give up our claim to the Pavlova!
In NZ our latest political 'scandal' is that the co-leader of the Green Party admitted that she committed benefit fraud for years but doesn't see why she should have to resign.

I'm no expert on the Australian constitution. Hell, I'm no expert on anything
but it looks like their supreme court will have to sort out this mess.
Does anybody know if Queen Elizabeth and the governor general still has the 'nuclear' option?
i.e Queen Elizabeth dissolves the current government and allows the Australian people the chance to elect a new one?
And where's sebster? He'd have a lot to say about this, unless he's been unmasked as a New Zealander as well!

The relevant section says nothing on penalties just;
Spoiler:
44. Disqualification

is under any acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or a citizen of a foreign power;
or is attainted of treason, or has been convicted and is under sentence, or subject to be sentenced, for any offence punishable under the law of the Commonwealth or of a State by imprisonment for one year or longer;
or is an undischarged bankrupt or insolvent;
or holds any office of profit under the Crown, or any pension payable during the pleasure of the Crown out of any of the revenues of the Commonwealth:
or has any direct or indirect pecuniary interest in any agreement with the Public Service of the Commonwealth otherwise than as a member and in common with the other members of an incorporated company consisting of more than twenty-five persons;
shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a senator or a member of the House of Representatives.
But subsection (iv) does not apply to the office of any of the Queen's Ministers of State for the Commonwealth, or of any of the Queen's Ministers for a State, or to the receipt of pay, half pay, or a pension, by any person as an officer or member of the Queen's navy or army, or to the receipt of pay as an officer or member of the naval or military forces of the Commonwealth by any person whose services are not wholly employed by the Commonwealth.
The powers of the Monarch and the Governor-General;
Spoiler:
57. Disagreement between the Houses
If the House of Representatives passes any proposed law, and the Senate rejects or fails to pass it, or passes it with amendments to which the House of Representatives will not agree, and if after an interval of three months the House of Representatives, in the same or the next session, again passes the proposed law with or without any amendments which have been made, suggested, or agreed to by the Senate, and the Senate rejects or fails to pass it, or passes it with amendments to which the House of Representatives will not agree, the Governor-General may dissolve the Senate and the House of Representatives simultaneously. But such dissolution shall not take place within six months before the date of the expiry of the House of Representatives by effluxion of time.
If after such dissolution the House of Representatives again passes the proposed law, with or without any amendments which have been made, suggested, or agreed to by the Senate, and the Senate rejects or fails to pass it, or passes it with amendments to which the House of Representatives will not agree, the Governor-General may convene a joint sitting of the members of the Senate and of the House of Representatives.
The members present at the joint sitting may deliberate and shall vote together upon the proposed law as last proposed by the House of Representatives, and upon amendments, if any, which have been made therein by one House and not agreed to by the other, and any such amendments which are affirmed by an absolute majority of the total number of the members of the Senate and House of Representatives shall be taken to have been carried, and if the proposed law, with the amendments, if any, so carried is affirmed by an absolute majority of the total number of the members of the Senate and House of Representatives, it shall be taken to have been duly passed by both Houses of the Parliament, and shall be presented to the Governor-General for the Queen's assent.
58. Royal assent to Bills
When a proposed law passed by both Houses of the Parliament is presented to the Governor-General for the Queen's assent, he shall declare, according to his discretion, but subject to this Constitution, that he assents in the Queen's name, or that he withholds assent, or that he reserves the law for the Queen's pleasure.
Recommendations by Governor-General
The Governor-General may return to the house in which it originated any proposed law so presented to him, and may transmit therewith any amendments which he may recommend, and the Houses may deal with the recommendation.
59. Disallowance by the Queen
The Queen may disallow any law within one year from the Governor-General's assent, and such disallowance on being made known by the Governor-General by speech or message to each of the Houses of the Parliament, or by Proclamation, shall annul the law from the day when the disallowance is so made known.
60. Signification of Queen's pleasure on Bills reserved
A proposed law reserved for the Queen's pleasure shall not have any force unless and until within two years from the day on which it was presented to the Governor-General for the Queen's assent the Governor-General makes known, by speech or message to each of the Houses of the Parliament, or by Proclamation, that it has received the Queen's assent.
I imagine by now both the Queen and Governor -General are to sick to death of the Ozzies asking to form a new government and just wish they would become a republic already.

Dual citizenship is a tricky thing. Different countries have different rules.
The general rule, however, is that your passport is the evidence of having taken up any second citizenship you may be entitled to. I have in mind the case of a British academic who was at a university in the USA for some years, during which time his wife gave birth to their youngest son. It never occurred to them to register the birth with the UK consular office. On return to a new job in the UK, Immigration looked at their passports and said "What about the American boy?"
Luckily it was a more enlightened time. The border officer advised the father to bring his son in on a tourist visa and quickly make application for the British passport he was entitled to by virtue of his parents' citizenship.
