Hey guys,

You helped with the Grey knight/Death Korps post i wrote a few days ago, and i friend, who is in a similar situation wants help with his problem starting a new army, except he's got a Nid melee heavy army. He doesn't know which of the above to start next?

Any advice you could give on either army?

Cheers

With his nids being melee heavy, i guess the decision is between mobile shooting or psychic shenanigans. Me Personal would always go by Favorite fluff with Choosin an army - but I believe DE to have more fun and working liste to Play with.

I love DE, they're my second army. You can have a very mobile army with decent anti infantries with poisoned shots/missiles and very good anti tank with tons of lances/blasters. They also have something that is ok in close combat like grotesques, beasts, incubi and talos.

DE also have several styles of playing since you may field a coven list, a kabal oriented one, a wych cult or a mix with these options. You can also play with the ynnari rules using the majority of the DE units available and craftworld eldar or harelquins as effective allies are also possible.

I voted Dark Eldar because they play very differently to nids, and are probably one of the deepest armies out there in terms of decisions you make on the board instead of in the list building stage.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I'd lean towards TSons personally, but then again I did just pick them up myself

They have a much more limited model range but it's all new, they look great, and their ranged options are really really nice.

The DE aren't a very forgiving army, but they are at least a fully formed one. They have a lot of variety in play style and their rules are shaping up to be quite competitive in 8th.

Thousand Sons on the other hand are a very niche army with very little flexibility in choice or playstyle. On top of that, what we've seen so far is pointing to them being very weak as it's clear simply giving them access to more psychic powers isn't going to somehow solve all their problems.

DE is the much safer bet at this point unless he's happy always playing the underdog.

If I remember right 1k sons are about to get a new codex so maby if those models is interesting it might be good to stick to his nids a little and see if the codex and hopefully new models appeals to him.

If your friend is in it to win it go DE. Lots of options and opportunities with Ynari and DE.

TSons are for the love of the hobby, and will likely suffer similar consequences of the past editions handling of elite armies (ie. Fewer models = fewer hits = fewer wounds = up hill battle with a limited pool). The "free" wounds from the psychic phase need to be high enough to balance the army, which I just don't see happening yet. That said, I could be wrong when the dex comes out.

With all this in mind, TSons rock. Their story and esthetic are outstanding.

Thousand Sons models are gorgeous and the army is fun to play IMO.

I have been playing DE since they first came out in 3rd ed. They are a very fast, very strong, very fun, and very unforgiving army. If you make a mistake with them the won't be able to "forgive" it like a thousand suns army will.

But DE are definitely a fun army to play with a style all their own. Normal Eldar don't even compare imo.

Having said that, with the new tsons codex coming out very soon it's a hard call to make. But I went DE.

Thousand Sons!

Why, I hear you cry? because they're elite, great mid-level gunners, packed to the nostrils with psykers, have some of the very best models in the game, can combo with horror spam if you feel the need to go power-cheez, have the BEST second party conversion kits, have amazing fluff, and they're dead space egyptophiles. I mean, come on.

TS are too boring to play. In matched play, the number of casts is severely limited.
On the other hand, DE is a potent army if you play Trueborn with splinter cannons or blasters in Raiders and Venoms supported by Ravagers.

They have 6 psyker powers now, alongside the 4 Tzeentch ones, if you're running a Changeling or something. Assuming that each of your psykers are smiting, and you've got a very high ceiling before you run into any problems. They also have two of the best psykers in the game, and buffs to let them +1 to smite, cast extra, etc. If you want a classy looking army with the best psyker set up in the game, 1kSons are far from boring.

Thanks for pointing out.
I admit that apart from the psychic phase, they are boring to play.
