So, I'v been thinking of starting a Ork army for some time now, And 8th edition seems like the perfect time to do so! So I wanted to ask, How are the orks doing in 8th edition? Are they considerd playable? I always thought they seemed like fun!

Yes they are playable, and they can even be fairly strong. Unfortunately, as of right now, there is only one build known to be competitive and that is 180-200 Boyz supported by lots of characters. If you are okay with that then Orks indeed are a lot of fun. Regards

Buy Ghazkhrul as a HQ, sprinkle in a couple of weirdboyz for Da Jump and Warpath, and buy about 120-180 Boyz for a bunch of 30-boy melee squads. Throw in a Big Mek with Kustom Force Field, and a painboy for feel no pain if you're feeling generous.

That's pretty much a summary of the only (currently) worthwhile list Orks can make, as most other units are hideously overpriced or underperforming compared to what every other army can field.

However, der's a lorra gitz hopin' for sum changez in da new codex.

Personally, i still like Orks, as they're a lot of fun to model the army as you can kitbash and scratch build a lot of your vehicles and things if you like. I have done a couple conversions for deff dreads and grot tanks that were a lot of fun. They're even fun to play as, they've just not actually been very *good* in a long time.

HOWEVER - If you do like the idea of a green horde of orks, properly organised those squads of 30 boyz can have 181 attacks in melee.

A Hundred and Eighty-One. Per squad of 30. So 4 troops choices can give you .... 720 attacks. Per turn.

This can effectively murder pretty much anything. Including friendships, as people will probably have given up on the game long before you've found enough dice to do all that rolling.

tldr:
Playable? Yes.
Fun to model? Yes.
Fun to play? Also yes.
Competitive? Only if you like running a lot (a lot) of boyz.

Orks used to be a lot more fun to be honest. They used to have a lot more modelling opportunities than they do now. They really don't seem to get any love from GW anymore.

Lets take a quick look at all the new things space marines have gotten lately, compared to what orks got :

Marines got some new weapon options. Orks now have much less weapon options.
Marines have new armour as well with the Primaris line. Orks are no longer allowed armour on their boyz (something they've had for decades)
Marines have new vehicles, on top of the dozens of vehicle options they had already. (Being able to have IG allies increases this a lot too). Orks have LESS than they used to, much less. Including forgeworld, it's like 6. But one of those is a superheavy, and another is overpriced enough to be useless. So lets call it 5.

Orks also lost several of their characters, though that has been happening gradually over the last couple editions.

I know I come off as salty, but Orks used to be such a fun army. They were very random, and crazy. Loads of rules where you might do a big crazy amount of damage.... or you might blow yourself up. And that was GOOD! That was ORKY! You could load your boys and trukks up with a bunch of toys if you wanted, or send them out in just a huge horde.

But now they've taken away most of the fun randomness, and just left in the occasional "Roll 2D6 this is your weapon strength" options, which would be ok but the weapons are generally only *acceptable* if you roll very high, and just bad if you roll average or below. So there's literally no point to taking them.

Grrr. Rant over. I'm gonna go kitbash a grot tank to cheer myself up.

Edited for weird quoting for some reason.

I have played against that last many a time already and yeah it's a good build.... can't seem to beat it.

Our resident ork player is having pretty mixed results. He runs a big horde and they seem to do well when they get some charges in, but they can get shot up fast and die in buckets. They really have a tough time if the opponent castles up, because it's impossible to get 150+ orks into a tiny area, but if the mission required spreading out to cover objectives orks can bring their full weight of numbers to bear.

In friendly or semi-competitive environments orks have several units that are playable. You'll have a lot of fun with them, especially if you like converting models.

Tournament wise they have only one list (and a few small changes about it) which puts them at mid-tier levels.

Bear in mind though, Space Marines:
1. have always got vastly more attention than any other faction – I don't particularly care for it either but I can't see GW changing tack on this any time soon;
2. have an 8th edition Codex; Orks don't yet.

Personally, I'm in no great hurry to see the Ork Codex arrive; I've got enough to be getting on with and the longer they take over it, the more likely I is any issues will be picked up and addressed.

There are a few ork units that are pretty decent. I used the FW meka dread in a recent game of mine and it wasn't too bad in close combat, and gearing it up with mega-charga made it easy to get into combat.
Really though, in the new rules orks don't really seem very... orky. The things that made orks orks aren't really here anymore. The orks were characterised by the hilarious and unpredictable units, weapons etc. The looted wagon is a perfect example of this. It was probably one of my favourite ork units. It wasn't very effective in game, but they were some of the fun parts of orks.

Orks require a slightly different approach than most armies. 9 out of 10 wins seem to be via scoring. You try to pressure as hard as possible to cover vital scoring and denying areas at the start of the games. Than 90 percent of your forces get shot off the table by the end of turn 3 but they points you've scored should be enough to wins of you don't get wiped out completely.
Orks have mellee punch but really lack staying power. If they opponent comes too close, he get a crumped. If he avoids your strong fronts, he easilly over power you but doesn't scored as mucb as you do.

Board setup affects Orks a lot. Little or no LOS blocking terrain and you're probably wasting your time setting up your guys.
