I'm an old 40k fan who is making the return back to 8th Edition after a long absence (like 15 years). There is a 1500 point tournament coming up in a few months that I would like to play in.

The problem is that I have no idea where to start with making a list. I have a bunch of miniatures available to use which are either painted (a little), undercoated (some) or on sprue (most), and I'm happy to pick up some more things to fill gaps, but I need a sensible start.

What I'm hoping you'll be able to do is look through what I've got available in the list below, suggest what from that would make part of a decent starter 1500 point army, and recommend some additional things to buy to fill any glaring holes.

I'm not after a hyper-competitive list, but just something flexible enough that I won't embarrass myself and learn the game again.

Here is what I have available:

Captain in Power Armour
Primaris Captain in Gravis Armour

Primaris Lieutenant with power sword
Primaris Lieutenant with auto bolt rifle
Primaris Ancient

Terminator Squad (5 marines with storm bolters, powerfists and an assault rifle)
Dreadnaught (Multimelta and Power Fist)

Intercessor Squad (10 marines)
Tactical squad (10 marines with plasma gun and missile launcher)
Tactical squad (10 marines with flamer and missile launcher)
Combat Squad (5 tactical marines)

Scout squad (5 marines with sniper rifle)
Scout squad (5 marines with bolters, bolt pistols and a heavy bolter)

Hellblaster Squad (5 marines)

Assault Squad (5 Marines with jump packs)
Inceptor Squad (3 Marines)

Landspeeder

Rhino

Landraider Crusader/Redeemer

I figure I could do with a Devastator Squad, maybe a Predator and some more assault marines, but I would really appreciate any suggestions for what to use to form the core of my army, and where to branch out to next.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you are dipping your toe into a little bit everything. 8th edition is about stratagems and auras. I would suggest getting a primaris apothecary and Lysander. Drop your current HQ for a Librarian or 2 and or Primaris Chaplin. Fists again the most from intessors since they are bolt weapons. Consider giving one squad automatics that creep up with Lysander and the termies, then another with Stalker pattern. I would also suggest an apothecary, land speeder+whirlwind combo, apoth, ancients and lieu's are characters so they can hold all the relics. Nobody expects to charge easy prey apothecary as he activates his Armor Indomitus.

Also how are you going to move that dread? You can teleport Lysander and his homies, so maybe get a storm raven filled with stern guard, a lieu, and lib and dropp him off to meetmlysander.

Thanks. That is some useful advice.

The above wasn't a list as such, but more some resources I have to draw from. But what you have said will definitely come in handy.

Imperial fists work well in cover with the chapter-specific warlord trait. It essentially removes the AP from -1 AP attacks targeting units in cover within 6'' of the warlord. This significantly improves the survivability of marines since such weapons (heavy bolters, assault cannons, cyclic ion blasters etc) lose out on 50% of their damage. Those weapons are some of the most efficient vs marines otherwise. I have been toying with the idea of an imperial fist gunline with sternguard, devastator marines etc sitting in an aegis defence line fortification close to a captain with the chapter master stratagem and this warlord trait. I'm not sure if it would be competitive since there are units out there that could bypass the protection entirely with -2 or higher AP, if they have a special rule that allows them to ignore cover or by simply rushing into melee but there is some potential there.
