When you put an Icon of <blank> from the Chaos Marines codex onto a unit, is that replacing the unit's main weapon with the banner you get in most marine boxes?

No. 'One model may take a Chaos Icon'.

Just what the rule says.

A fancy thing. Previous editions had rules for banners explicitly. Right now AFAIK it's just window dressing or used to indicate an Icon.

So since there isnt really any rules for it, I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard in non-tournament play to say it's a Boltgun/Chainsword, or in this case Brutal Assault Weapon?

There are rules for it? Each of the Chaos Icons has an effect. No-one is going to insist you somehow stick a bolter onto the model with the Icon too.

Its an Icon. The rules for it are on page 153 of the codex.

If you have something that looks more like a banner than an Icon, its still just an icon in the rules. It is definitely not a Boltgun, Chainsword or Brutal Assault Weapon.

Oooh, ok thats what had me confused. So an Icon replaces the primary weapon on the marine that is holding it.

No, it does not! You just take an icon for the model on top of whatever other weapons it has.

So how would I slap an extra gun on the model then? Would I just not use the left hand holding the end of the rifle of a primary weapon and then have a pistol holstered?

Answers about modeling aren't binding, as there are no rules in the book about WYSIWYG, conversions or anything else of that ilk.

However, from my experience, I wouldn't worry so much about modeling 'standard' weapons that all models in the unit come with, as everyone kind of knows and understands that all the models in the unit have those weapons. It is really the optional upgrades (Icon, special weapon, heavy weapons, optional melee weapons, etc.) that you need to bother with, as those are the items that your opponent wouldn't know the squad has unless they see them on the model.

So if you give one of the guys an Icon, then make sure you have a banner/icon on that model...don't worry about making sure he has all his 'standard' weapons represented (as most models don't have every single one of their standard weapons represented, especially in the case of grenades and pistols).

Or you can just model it on top of a back pack. Keep the arms free for the killing toys.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!
