Hi everyone,

after another stop of a year I'm getting back into the game with 8E, so I got the (really nice) Dark Imperium Box to get some tasty models along with the rulebook. Asides from Grey Knights I never played any Space Marines so far and wondered about the new Primaris Marines. If I got that right they are not only new models, but have in fact different names and statlines, right? How are they integrated into existing Space Marine Chapters? From the storyline I got that many revive extinct Chapters, taking over their fortresses and homeworlds. But how is this done rulewise? There does not seem to be a separate Codex for them, but weirdly enough a "Primaris Edition" of a regular Codex. Are their rules in the normal Codex: Space Marines?

And are they separate Chapters, so they are taken as separate detachments?

I'm asking, because from the past Dark Vengeance boxes I still have some Dark Angels that I would like to play at some point. For me it would make sense to paint the Primaris models as Dark Angels. But does this work out, fluff wise? Will Dark Angels get Primaris reinforcements? Or would I have to make compromises and then have my Dark Angels detachment with some another Primaris detachment that coincidentially has the same colour scheme?

Thanks for helping me out, at least it seems to be less confusing than 7E epubs, datasheets and whatever.

Their rules are in the normal SM codex. They can be whatever chapter you want. Their usefulness ranges from useless to mediocre with a single exception (Hellblasters, but that's because Plasma as a whole is undercosted).

In the fluff old style marines are being phased out, and commanders can be "upgraded", so a lot of people assume they will phase out the old marine models and rules at some point.

Personally I would use them as Truescale Normal Marines, but that's just me.

Thanks for the hint, guess I will have to get a SM codex. I don't mind about people considering models subpar or imba, I like to vary my lists and play different units against others who do the same.

So I guess I can just paint them as Dark Angels without it being too weird, fluffwise.

Yeah, the Dark Angels integrated Primaris marines into their companies. You can expand your DA with them, or start a new successor chapter, or whatever you feel like doing. Just remember that the Dark Angels rules are in the Index, and the updated Primaris Rules are in the Space Marine codex. When Dark Angels get their codex, I'm sure they'll have Primaris units there too.
