Hi Everybody!

While a basic colour in every painters kit and probably an absolute necessity , Black is an incredibly difficult colour to make!

When I created the first batch of colours for the INSTAR paint range, most of the feedback was that the Obsidian Black I supplied was more like a dark grey which I had to admit, it wasn't quite as black as i'd liked it to be. Going back to the drawing board and trying some new variables, The new Obsidian Black is much blacker than its first incarnation, while not as black as GW Abbadon black, it is extremely close. (Original Obsidian Black on the Left, New Obsidian Black on the Right)

And my poor test marine has had yet another paint to test, Thsi time it's his legs that have had to take the brunt of the test. Abbadon Black is on the left of the picture and the Obsidian Black is on the right of the picture.

Pay no attention to the left knee pad, that was another test that went VERY wrong!

Note the metallic on the gun as well, while not quite the Leadbelcher colour I hoped for, it is much closer to Runefang Steel. However this is still very much a WIP with the metallics, though I made a small breakthrough today and if it works....I might be able to offer metallics in any colour!

But that's another story for now!

Cool, my observation (still trying to find an excuse to use more of the paints) was definitely that it was dark grey.

I have to agree, part of the issue was that the paint development was very much in its infancy but with further refinement of the techniques means that I have managed to get the shade much darker than the original.

I'm still working on it mind you, think I might end up pulling my hair out trying to get a blacker black

A dark grey / charcoal color is still very useful for highlighting 'black areas!

I've got some more ideas floating around, one of them being a tint range so 3-6 colours going in a range from say black to grey, but not sure if it might be too much and the range becomes too big and complicated

This marine is mostly Instar paints... I got lazy with the highlights and just added white. The black is highlighted using the old Instar black (that is really grey). Was a really quick job too...

Neet. a very very dark grey is always useful.

I would love to see some one use that fliping ultra black (i think it was called like Black 2.0 or something)

or vantablack on a model
