I've been somewhat out of 40k for a couple of years, but after a few months of fairly consistent output, I thought I'd start putting things in one place. I suppose three things have conspired to pull me back in to painting and modelling properly (though I'm still not playing). First and most obvious is probably the new (marine) kits, closely followed by the new edition of 40k not being so silly. The surprising one was realising how much having a pot of brush-wash water next to me when painting speeds things up (I know, most of you have been doing it for years). These three below would have taken me a week or so to get to this (not finished) stage before, but now it's the work of only a half-day:

I'll be posting more pictures as I get further through the pile of grey plastic waiting to be painted, probably jumping theme/army every few weeks. In the mean time, here are a few things I've done lately.

Well, that was a very slow couple of months in terms of hobby output. Apart from a painting up a squad of Fallen, this Ordo Astartes Inquisitor is the only new model I've painted lately (still in progress, comments welcome)!

Hopefully with Necromunda arriving next week, I'll get through some more soon...

More pictures and more paint. Believe it or not, he towers over a Terminator - Ordo Astartes indeed!

I've been working on a quintet of new Deathwatch marines this evening, but I have a problem. I can't figure out what to do with the Minotaur's right arm.

Drawing on the "Greek and aggressive" theme, I've got him posed as if he running in to stab something with a short sword (which by happy coincidence looks a little like a Xiphos) held horizontal to the ground.

Problem is, all the ideas I can think of for the right arm either unbalance or detract from the aggressiveness of the pose. I've got a pretty sizeable bits box, but I could really do with some suggestions...

Maybe have the arm pulled up and back with an open hand, ready to grab and pull the enemy onto the sword?

Youwashock - I guess that could work, but I'm having a little difficulty imagining it as anything other than the Han and Kylo Ren scene - I guess I'd best not paint that power sword red...

Meanwhile, I've got four new inductees to the Deathwatch, and a trio of quite individual Inquisitorial henchmen:

Left to right, Death Spectre (really could have chosen a better place to display the pad, and painting's going to be a nightmare), Marines Errant, Star Phantoms, Lamenters (always wanted a Lamenter)

don't suppose they use shields? looks like it'd be a natural for it especially with a greek theme

Indeed the Minotaurs do Guildenstern. I've seen a couple of self-built shields which do a very good job of recreating the kind of shield the Greek Hoplites used (oval tower shield with a cutout on each of the long sides), but unfortunately I don't think I'm quite good enough with plasticard at the moment for that. I did try some (ok, pretty much all) of the shields in my bitz box, but all of them were either too heavy-looking, or were so large they obstructed the Minotaurs shoulder pad and took all the focus away from the "ready to lunge" pose.

The good news is that while building another five new inductees, I realised that another of the same blade, but held reverse-grip might work. Then I got carried away and glued it all:

What do you think - does it work?

I've also got a trio of gunslingers, with a classic run-and-gun pose for the Viper Legion marine, shoot two things at once from the Iron Fists chapter, and more arrogant and stately plasma wielder from the Marines Malevolent. The obligatory pyromaniac (Fire Lord) and a Tranquillity Veteran Sniper from the Mantis Warriors round the latest Kill Team out to ten.

A new Space Wolf contingent, separated from their main fleet by the war and warp-storms of the Cicatrix Maledictum, have been loosely inducted in to the local Watch Fortress - fighting their mutual enemies with greater numbers, while keeping a keen ear out for their Great Company's fate.

In truth, this was a good excuse to use the multitude of wolf parts in my bitz box, turn a Stormwolf in to a more Inquisitorial transport (more on that another time), and try out a dark-grey way of painting Deathwatch. While I like it, and I think it works for the Space Wolves, the rest of the Deathwatch will have to remain properly black.

Rumours of a new bounty hunter have been rampant in the underhive of late, with some even claiming he's been sent by an Inquisitor. Whoever he is, Horned Namshiel's been claiming an impressive kill-count, but none can say what he's after yet.

Still got some sculpting to do around the upper arms, and the back of the head (somehow lost the horns so I had to borrow a set from a Gnoblar helmet)...

Another Inquisitorial acolyte, this one borrowed from others who I've seen use the Scions body and Scourge head together. Reckon I need to work the skirt up some more, and get the eyes a bit brighter though.

Yay - it's a snow day for me today. With luck, I'll get a few more inquisitorial acolytes or Deathwatch painted (or at least further on)!

Added a few more layers to the Crow and to Horned Namshiel yesterday:

Time for more models!

I realised that there was a big Ecclesiarchy-shaped hole in my Inquisitorial retinues (being mostly inspired by Eisenhorn and Ravenor, who don't really do the whole priest thing). I reckon three should do it.

So, we've got a generic mendicant/penitent priest, a militant confessor with a nice servo-fist (and a coat covered in purity seals), and a Dialogus with a big loudspeaker. Oh, and mandatory wild zealot beards for all:

Is it a vile Xenos? Is it a dirty mutant? Is it a servant of the Machine God?

Whatever it truly is, for once it's a painted thing, and will count as a Jokaero.

Even the simple work is very effective. You have a real knack for bashing.

Thanks kestral and Fifty, always nice to know my work is appreciated.

Today has been a good day for experiments. I tried making macarons for the first time, which came out rather nicely. I think my cheap-ass Wyloch-inspired take on the Zone Mortalis tiles is coming along nicely. I reckon the walls could do with something to add interest - I'm undecided between simple vertical stanchions, or pointed arches. I know which will be easier though. There'll be some square grating going under the holes so it looks a little more starship, but that's not arriving for another two or three weeks (really need to look at which country the super-cheap supplies are in).

What do you think? Could I get away with using squares for the floor cut-outs instead? I like the look now, but I may have a breakdown if I have to draw and cut out too many more (26 on just this 12" square tile) of those octagons for the floor though!

Another great kitbash. And how many bits went into that rifle?

Wow, it's a while since I've put anything on here.

@Fifty - I think the rifle is only three parts (VanSaar rifle stock with integrated hand, Primaris bolt rifle, and Delaque pistol(!) silencer), plus brass rod.

@kestral - I've lost a bunch of pictures, so probably not, but I'll see if I can dig the models out again and snap some bigger pics.

Meet Tallie, based (in colours at least) on Tallie Lintra and other Rebel / Resistance starfighter pilots. Bit of a quick paint job, but at least she's painted now (and if I keep this up, I might even have all the Inq models painted by the end of the year)!

She made quite the impression flying a daring rescue mission for a young Inquisitor, who took the severe injuries she received in the subsequent crash as a personal debt. Sparing no expense, he had her augmetically restored and recruited her in to the warband.

Earlobe deep in doo doo

Do you have a decent craft shop near you? Granny mesh for knitting is cheap and readily available.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Yep, I've got plenty of that already, in fact that's what's going in the gaps in the flooring above (if I ever finish, that is).

In the meantime, I've rediscovered a fondness for Tyranids with a new colour scheme (after assembling 50+ of Gaunts a while back kind of killed my enthusiasm). Unsurprisingly, the Gaunts are still relegated to the close confines of the carry case though.

Seems like now is the time of really useful feedback, with this fellow being a little too factory-fresh to be believable, so a couple of video tutorials later, he's a little more dinged up. Can't wait for lockdown to end so I can get some Rhinox Hide and see how that works for chips and scrapes!

Thanks youwashock - really happy with how they came out, even after the fear of getting them wrong kept me from finishing the painting for a few months.

Carrying on the flame and one-off Marines theme, I saw voidjord's lovely 30k Kill Team recently and wanted one of those marines for myself. I hadn't given much thought to which chapter he should hail from, until I saw an unfinished test-piece Inquisitorial Henchman model I'd been using to try out a greenish weathered brass at around the same time as I was looking at Salamanders for Deathwatch inspiration.
