Is there a difference in the units or is it just purely cosmetic?

The big difference is the availability of assault rifles, otherwise not really. A early war regular and a late war regular are exactly the same

Very well. So Grenadier is the standard doods, Blitz being more dakka. Thanks General Ian

You've got that kind of backwards. Both boxes are standard infantry it's just the grenadiers are late war regular infantry and have slightly more access to automatic weapkns

The Germans changed the name of their standard infantry unit as the war progressed as a sort of a morale thing. Technically the composition, weaponry and to an extent purpose changed as well. In game terms though yeah, like most other nation's armies you have an Early-War and Late-War version of the same unit (and with the theatre books mid war too). Its just to limit early-war players from taking technology which hadn't been issued yet.

If I am going for a mid 1942 force, can I use both boxes to build composite infantry?

Not unless you want to do a lot of conversion work. Blitzkrieg Germans have the gas cape sculpted pouch onto the torso piece (for some god forsaken reason) and thus limit their use from 1939-1941. By mid-1942 the Germans had taken to either discarding the gas cape or placing it elsewhere such as wrapped around their gas mask can. On the other hand, the Grenadiers box has some very distinctly latewar sculpts. Chiefly, the 1943/1944 tunics. In 1943 the Germans introduced a new model of tunic with strait cut pocket flaps which the Grenadiers seem like they have. In 1944 they made a very cut down version of the jacket akin to the ones worn by US infantry. That's why you see some Greandiers wear very short jackets.

Now, the saving grace here is that most of the Grenadier sculpts have their pocket flaps partially obscured by the Y-straps. Unless you looked -very- closely it's hard to notice the fact they are 1943 model tunics. You could get some grenadiers and just omit the soldiers with 1944 model jackets and get something reasonably historically accurate. Moreso than using Blitzkrieg Minatures. If you want 100% historical accuracy I would recommend Warlord's older plastic German kit or some metals. Warlord's older kit had their guys in 1936/1940 model tunics but, hey, they were still around in 1942.

Looking at the Warlord German Infantry weapon which comes with the late war kit there's enough Kar-98Ks to outfit a squad. Obviously the G43 and Panzerfaust don't come till 1943. If you're going for mid-1942 that's a few months too early for any Assault Rifles either (and only on the Eastern Front in 1942. I don't believe the Bolt Action rules allow for anyone but Late War squads to have them however).

You'd be better off buying metals if you want specific dress. Here's two sites with lists of manufacturers if you're looking for stuff.
