Hey guys, I'm a new ork player here
I'm about to play my first game.its a simplified form of 40k called battle to vedros (rules below)
Edit, quality is ahnilllated so here's a link https://goo.gl/images/p53VtC
I'm playing orks
1 warboss
5 nobz
10 boyz
1 deffkopta

Any tips on what essential models my guys should get?
Or just tips on what's useful for orks

Hi there, nice to see another player choosing Orks.

Slugga boyz, Wierd boyz and Kustom Mega Cannons are all very good right now in 8th edition, but chasing the flavour of the moth in Warhammer is a fools game. Doubly so for an Ork player!
There are a lot of characterful models like Killa Kans and Flash Gits that people love regardless of battlefield performance.

If battle for Vedros is still set in 7th edition, then I think that Grechin, bikers and Shoota Boyz in trucks were the best things to use back then.

What you should do is get more boyz, they're a dependable unit that can be the workhorse of any army. Also, most of your specialists are just ork boyz with a special weapon/gear such as tankbustas (orks with rocket launchers), burnas (Orks with flamethrowers), kommandos (Orks kitted for infiltration), etc. you can buy a bunch of boyz for cheap and DIY some weapons instead of buying the more expensive specialists.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Hi, I'm a new ork player too.
After a box of boyz (just to see if painting was my thing) I started with the "Start collecting orks" box set.
I am very happy of my purchase. A lot of value for the money (according to GW cost standard): boyz that you'll always need, a painboy that is a very detailed model and can be useful in combat and most of all the Deff Dread model. That alone is 40€ at least in my country. May be not your first choice in battle but stunning model and a lot of customisations possibilities.
It has also other 5 nobs. You already have nobs and I don't know if you are interested in having more... but you'll get extra kombi skorcha and kombi rokkit launche bits.

Those start collecting boxes are phenomenal, one of the best values I've seen from GW in a good while, and really a sign of the lengths the new CEO is going to to fix some of the company's mistakes. Honestly the only thing I'd like to see out of them (though I know we won't), would be a little more variety, more than one per army, especially in armies with different classes of low-level troops. Like, playing DE, I picked up a friend's army for a steal, and it is almost 100% Kabal, which makes the DE start collecting box of little use to me, whereas I'd love to see a Wych-centric or Haemonculus-centric one. Imperial guard has there Cadian-centric one, but they could put out a Catachan-centric one, that kind of thing.

Wouldn't be bad some big numbers discount bundle for players too. For example some 50 ork boyz for lower price box set...
I purchased da Vulcha Skwad from the GW website and literally it is 3 boxes of stormboys and a Zagstruk blister in the Royal Mail box.
Would be the same to send 5 boxes of boyz and call it Green tide box set..

I'd love a set of just loads of boys man.
Also I think I've decided the next logical step with the limited rulesets I have here is to get burnas, and lootas. Since I can use the weapon stats for space marine heavy weapons and flamethrowers to play them with the simplified ruleset
As well as some boys and gretchin to pad out my army
Maybe even a wartrakk or two to flank with

Y'know, Forgeworld has their big Titan sets (for the man who has everything except 5 titans, including $3200 to blow on 5 titans) that is like, contact us an we'll work out what you want, as long as it totals everything to make two warhounds, two reavers, and a warlord.

GW could do something similar with the start collecting boxes, since they have fairly similar composition. Like, say it's $85 or whatever most of them are, and for that you pick options from different lists of comparably priced selections to what's already in them

So, like, for DE, you could get
Succubus OR Haemonculus OR Archon
(Pick 2)3 Reavers OR 10 Scourges OR 10 Hellions OR 10 Kabalites OR 10 Wyches OR 5 Wracks (for trueborn and hekatrixes)
1 Raider OR 1 Venom

For Orks
1 Weirdboy OR 1 Painboy OR 1 Warboss
10 Boyz OR 20 Gretchin
5 Nobz OR 5 Burna Boyz OR 5 Loota Boyz
1 Deff Dread OR 5 Flash Gitz OR 3 Killa Kanz OR 10 Trukk Boyz w/ Trukk

Marines could be like
1 Captain OR 1 Librarian OR 1 Apothecary
10 Tactical Marines OR 10 Assault Marines Or 10 Scouts
5 Terminators OR 3 Bikers OR 5 Veterans
1 Rhino OR 1 Razorback

and so on and so forth, so that you could get some decent discounts for buying large numbers of models, but without having to sacrifice versatility. Of course, the one problem with this is it would pretty much have to be a webstore thing, unless they wanted to create a system for FLGS's to order kits for people.

This should tell you all you need to know!

Personally I've a load of old cheap fantasy orks from eBay, so I'm preparing a 150 boy green tidal wave of doom! Kind of how I imagine the orks. I really want to try the painboy-weirdboy synergy and Da Jump 30 Slugger boys reliably every turn, Combined with a Stormboy deep strike.

I've added an Ironjawz Megaboss converted up with Deffdread pieces as the warlord with Ghazghkull Thraka's stat line, who looks just awesome. For anti-tank duties I've made up 15 looters and found points in my list for 15 boys to sit back and bubblewrap them. And for elites I'm going with the 10 Nobz with Kombi-Skorchas and power stabbers.

I also bought some Gretchen because I love the models, but they really are next to useless in a competitive game. Actually tempted just to use them for Deffdread decoration.

I've saved a fair bit of money by going on triplehelixwargames (sweet discounts) and buying 3 of the start collecting orcs box sets (along with the stormboyz and a couple of boxes of looters.)
Through all the spares I've built extra looters, kitted out all the nobz with combi-scorchers, build tank busters using the spare rockets, and generally allowed me to kit bash together all the different HQ options I want in the army. Sorry if I'm being patronising, it's pretty obvious. But I love the fact my Nob with Waaagh! Banner is unique to my army.

Another thing that's worked beautifully (only because I somehow get it up the field through incredibly lucky save rolls) is a Deffdread rocking 4 Scorchers.

Oh, and I'd recommend just playing 8th. It's simple and quick.

I second this! Half of the fun (at least!) of playing orks is kitbashing stuff together. Zog it, they're ORKS for Mork's (and/or Gork's) sake, no two tanks, bikes, or even sidearms should look the same! So long as the big shoota's are bigger than the regular shoota's and the flash gitz gun's are snazzier looking than either you're set.

Really, I envy you right now. You have not just every 40k army's models to browse through for bits and bobs to loot, you also have all of the 30k stuff, all the fantasy stuff, every scale model from every country and every era on earth, and every random bit or bob you can dig out of a toystore bargain bin! (...and also every OTHER model from every OTHER wargame, too!) The wargaming miniature world is your oyster.

Just remember, you're an Ork now. You can loot anything!

(Oh, and welcome to dakkadakka. )

This. Don't buy into the GW business model of "hey, buy 10 more boxes of troops you don't need to get those 10 special weapons you do". There is always a way to make everything, be it kit-bashing, press-molding, or just painting things to look right. And when you can't there's the swap shop and ebay.
