What do y'all say? We could still retain the Smilies list for people who use ten year old desktop browsers. I'm game for contributing some pixel art

See, right there I added a wink emoji, and post preview showed it, but the actual aubmitted post doesn't show it. Especially for new users for whom emoji are a natural part of informal typing, it's inconsistent and antiquated.

What ? I can see your ork emoticon, it is working perfectly.

You can see the Ork smilie, but you can't see the winking yellow face next to it that I selected from the emoji menu in Safari's virtual keyboard. At the end of this comment I have typed raised fist, thumbs up, angelic face, cowboy face, sleepy face, poop, Jolly Roger, woman graduate, half moon, fire, snowman, motorcycle, helicopter, light bulb, hammer, flag of Afghanistan. I'm going to Submit and see what works.

From where I'm looking, raised fist has been reproduced in its iOS emoji appearance. None of the others are there.

Now if you can provide a reason that any of those things would actually be relevant to the forum, you might have a case...

I'm fine with what we've got now, the orkmoticons on Dakka are some of the few emoticons/emojis I can use/read without cringing.

I think this is your issue, you click on Orkmoticons in the side bar or just type them out with punctuation not with a Safari virtual keyboard

I think this is missing the point, but...
I'm taking my army to war
I won
I never TFG
I'm a mod/TO/FLGS or playing any of a dozen Wild West games
I'm still waiting for plastic sisters
I got beaten by Nurgle's Rot
I'm building Kaptin Badrukk/Corsairs
I just got my degree!
I'm starting Night Goblins
more dakka
Got smashed by Yhetees
I'm bringing Warbikerz to my next game
And Deffkoptaz
Good idea!
Fine, I'll bring my THSS guys
I'm a veteran or refugee or just live in Kabul

...so I've got my case now, right?

Seriously, though, why would we not want to enhance our forum with a widely adopted, well established, highly accessible system of communication? That's exactly what we did when we first introduced Orkmoticons - see above, 38% of a scattered selection turned out to have Orkmoticon equivalents. Why would we not want to take the opportunity to expand that great idea, with a load of the technical stuff already laid in place for us? All it would take is to incorporate Emoji into our systems (and the raised fist Emoji working raises a legit question as to what's going on with regard to that), and then begin overriding the assets with our own existing and future ones. Why would we not want the icons that we already have and integrate them into the system that's second nature to a large section of GW's target demographic?

Did someone put something in my tea this morning?

If you can't express yourself properly through this forum without the use of "Orkmojis", dare I say you've come to the wrong place.

I'm literally offering to create new content. Are we actually saying that this is a bad idea?

I couldn't remember when the last time was that we got a new "Orkmoticon" so I googled 'new orkmoticon'. The first result is this thread. How come when I offer to create new content, it gets friction, yet when others ask for new content, it gets offered?

Is it because I suggested an accompanying change that makes the forum assets sound less 1998? Ok, let's not call them Orkmoji. I know, the damage has been done, I've dirtied the pool by associating the idea with that movie, but come on - why do we not want to integrate our built-in reaction GIFs into the virtual keyboards that most internet users are typing on? Why does the forum only seem to support ✊️? (I don't even know if it universally does so, because nobody's actually responded on that point.) If we're going to support that one, why not the others? If we've already got a local system in place of pictographs, why not have that override the global one?

Hyperspace

Emoji should never have existed. It's obnoxious, irritating, and frankly cringy. Back in my day we typed out our smily faces with special characters, or looked up the alt code for smily face.

Personally, I seriously reconsider my relationships with people who spam helicopters and turnips in text messages. We are not ancient egypt. We use words to communicate, not colored pictures of various food.

Now I'm no tech whizz, but I'm of the impression that running this site takes an awful lot of work in terms of coding and whatnot. With that in mind, suggestions to the site would be ideally ones that can help significantly improve user experience - mobile compatibility would be a good example of this, as covered here.

I look at porting in emojis and ask what the hell the point is. At no point in my time on Dakka have I been lost in the ability of explanation or understanding that one of the already existing Orkmoticons could not plug in for me.

I couldn't remember when the last time was that we got a new "Orkmoticon" so I googled 'new orkmoticon'. The first result is this thread. How come when I offer to create new content, it gets friction, yet when others ask for new content, it gets offered?

In fact, rather recently, two new Orkmoticons were added ( and ). Thread here. The reason that this thread hasn't gotten approval is that there are no actual suggestions for Orkmoticons that either have been suggested by other users in another thread (and got backing for) or would be genuinely of some sort of intrinsic value in a typical Dakka discussion, be it for understanding or humour. Requesting that Legoburner and his Meks should spend time recoding the site to allow for regular emojis to be able to be used because the site is "inconsistent and antiquated" is not likely to generate results, whereas asking if a certain idea for an Orkmoticon could possibly be created will. That's the difference between you and others offering new content.

So I'm 19 - someone who's definitely in the sort of age range that would be using emojis. Frankly I think the majority of emojis are absolute bollocks - outside of smiling, grinning and using to indicate what I said was a joke, I have found little to no use for anything else, and that's on Facebook, where I casually chat to friends.

Dakka is a discussion board, used to level arguments in (hopefully, at least) a polite environment. Words are the majority of content here, not emojis. Conversations here are not going to be improved with "raised fist, thumbs up, angelic face, cowboy face, sleepy face, poop, Jolly Roger, woman graduate, half moon, fire, snowman, motorcycle, helicopter, light bulb, hammer, flag of Afghanistan" or any of the other gak you find on a virtual keyboard. We have nearly 160 Orkmoticons and smilies, and your argument is that we need more on a themed hobby discussion site.

If you have some particular suggestions, then people will listen and give their endorsement. But asking for virtual keyboard compatibility is both a big task and really a big waste of time and resources. The MODS and Admins are free to correct me if I'm wrong on that, but that's how I see it.

I think you have the cart before the horse. People ask for new orkmoticons all the time, and it never happens... but someone created the salt/tiny violin orkmoticons a few months ago, and they got added within like 24 hours. This issue has never appeared to be a development one, but a lack of art assets one.

I think if you create a few art assets and then show them here, your support will materialize.

Dakka forum programmer shuffles around in his robes. "Where is that 'Implement standard that'll be replaced next year' button? I left it right next to my 'Support web browser of the current month by breaking last month's web browser' button!"

If you want to add more orkicons that's fine, but give it a couple years and even apple won't be supporting the Emoji standard - they'll have moved on to another standard. *Sadly looks at his AngularJs gear and sheds a tear*

While the orkmoticons add character to dakka, I'd like to know if there's a way to default to regular emoticons. Sometimes I want to use an old fashioned smiley or wink.

And to heck with those new fangled emoji. They are a plague upon communication.

So the real issue boils down to "why won't dakka work with a virtual keyboard in a random browser", and not about the orkmoticons themselves?

If you want to create new content and make more orkmoticons/orkmojis, it will be very welcome, I'm sure.

But I don't expect that the board will implement compatibility with random browser plugins. Once you change the board to be compatible with stuff you end up chasing that compatibility every time the plugin changes.
