I just started playing AOS and of course chose the sky dwarves. I need to start picking up more models but im not sure what are good/bad choices. I have one of each kit so far. My local scene isnt competitive at all. very friendly, so Im not lookin for that cheesy tourny list. I dont remember the factions but i know there is rats, chaos, lizards, skelly snakes, and orks so far.

also after reading the tactica thread I was wondering on thoughts about the points changes and the thunderer rules changes from the new rulebook. Does that change opinions?

I think just start with your battleline units first in case you play "matched play", which is only the arknaught company and then just add the models you like/ can afford. If your group is not competitive then just use what you think would be enjoyable. If you are looking at a competitive army then it would depend on what skyport/ code you will use.
