The Battle of Tute Oriel

Introduction
Spoiler:
So, my first game with 8th Edition, and not with my normal army!
My girlfriend recently started a Necron army, and on a trip to Warhammer World, got round to playing both our first game together, my first game in 8th Edition, and her first game in general.

No pressure.

So, I aimed to get a good variety of units in, to showcase a lot of the game: GEQ, TEQ, Deep Strikers, shooting units, psychic powers, close combat, all that jazz. Of course, not my standard Ultramarines for this. My Cadians, buffed by some Grey Knights I'd just been working on, would do the job.

She took all she had: an Overlord with warscythe, some Necron Warriors, Scarabs and an Annihilation Barge

whereas I took: a Senior Officer, 20 Guardsmen - not conscripts, I'm not SADISTIC - 9 Scions (command squad and regular), with two meltaguns, plasma guns and hotshot volley guns and a Tempestor Prime, and 3 Grey Knight Paladins with storm bolters and halberds/falchions.

Her list was around 450 points, with mine being slightly over points, which we were okay with - giving her the Underdog rule.
Our mission was the first on the Only War chart - four objectives, scoring at the end of the game, with 2 VPs per, and D3 for killing the enemy Warlord (my Senior Officer and her Overlord), with the Underdog getting a Minor Victory in case of a draw.
We deployed on the long sides, with me taking the first turn.

I thought, given how many Guardsmen I had, my use of Scions and Paladins and other stuff, I'd have to tone down my tactics to make it a fun game.

I was wrong.

Battle Report

Following reports of unidentified figures roaming the red wastes of Tute Oriel and an equipment convoy being intercepted, a small detachment of on-leave Guardsmen of the Cadian 13th Light Infantry Regiment were mobilised to secure the goods from the caravan. Scant moments after Tempestus Scion forces arrived to oversee the retrieval of the goods, the skeletal alien threat emerged. Early awakening forces of the Necron Daerekh dynasty, commanded by the Overlord Asim, had wiped out one set of intruders, and would do so again...

Deployment wrote:
Colonel Halter's recovery force makes it's arrival, with a core of Scions holding the line.

Out of nowhere, the Daerekh Dynasty launches it's ambush.

First sighting of Daerekh vehicle force, classification "Annhilation Barge". The vehicle caused massive damage to Imperial forces on Tute Oriel.

Turn 1 Imperium:
Reacting to the floating alien vehicle on the left flank, 2nd Squad moved to defend the teleport homer in the nearest building. Likewise, 1st Squad moved alongside Colonel Halter to secure the bomb objective, leaving the Scions to lay down suppressive fire on the Warriors which had appeared on the ruined shrine. Unfortunately, their hot-shot volley guns were less than effective, causing no damage to the skeletal xenos.

Imperium Turn 1 wrote:
Early-capture footage of the Scion troops opening fire on the Necron assailants.

Turn 1 Necrons:
The poor technology of the infant Imperium was nothing to the Daerekh Dynasty - as their Annihilation Barge swiftly demonstrated. In a flash of ozone, tesla bolts eradicated most of 2nd Squad. The two survivors retreated as quickly as they had arrived, the objective forgotten.
The scarab swarms on the right flank scuttled over to the shrine, their small frames hoping to avoid undue attention from the scrambling guardsmen.

Necron First Turn wrote:
Squad 2 is eradicated by arcing bolts of tesla from the Annihilation Barge, leaving just two survivors.

Guardsmen Kallem and Hadding, pictured above, were caught two miles away from the nearest Imperial staging post, and summarily executed for desertion.

Turn 2 Imperium:
With Squad 2 gone, the Scions grabbed the objective, and radioed in for reinforcements. The Tempestor Prime and his command squad airdropped in to the woods just in front of the barge, and threw some of the strongest man-portable weapons the Imperium had at the xenos creation. However, not even the meltaguns could pierce the barge's quantum shielding, the energies being absorbed into the black onyx frame. The shots at the Warriors above likewise did very little damage, scoring off of their armour and the ruins, leaving them unscathed.

Imperium Turn 2 wrote:
Where the guardsmen fail, the Tempestus Scions shall prevail!*

*prevailing not guaranteed

Turn 2 Necrons:
The Annihilation Barge opened fire again, turning the meltagunners in the command squad to slag and ash, leaving a pair of plasma guns and the Tempestor Prime alone in the open. Eager to feel the thrill of combat after their long slumber, the Warriors left the strange book atop the shrine to the scarabs, and descended down the ruins to join Overlord Asim. The Imperium was in rout.

Necron Turn 2 wrote:
Xenos blasphemers desecrate the ruins of the Shrine of the Aquila.

Turn 3 Imperium:
Taking an interest in the heretical tome the Scarabs had swarmed over, high above the planet, hidden behind an asteroid field, the Grey Knight Strike Cruiser 'Silver Hand teleported in it's compliment of three Paladins to retrieve the artefact from the alien threat. Teleporting out of sight of both the Necron forces and the Cadian guardsmen, Paragon Aleyn had the Paladins hold their ground until ready.
Meanwhile, on the left flank, the Scion forces opened fire on the Scarab creatures overlooking the battlefield, killing a third of the swarm with hotshot fire and plasma. The Cadians on the right instead opened up an ordered volley of lasfire on the Warriors, killing one of the soulless automata.

Imperium Turn 3 wrote:
Unidentified pict feed captures the Paladins of the Grey Knights teleporting into the fray.

Colonel Halter orders a volley of lasfire at the advancing Necrons - unaware of the Grey Knights behind the crates.

Turn 3 Necrons:
Unaware of the Grey Knights a few metres away from them, the Warriors moved closer to the Guardsmen, slinging gauss rounds at them. Cadian pluck pulled through, and none were killed by the beams of green energy. The same could not be said on the left flank: despite sheltering in cover as per their training, the plasma gunners were killed off by the Annihilation Barge's Tesla Destructor, slaughtering yet more of the Scions.

Necron Turn 3 wrote:
The ruins quickly become a charnel house for the Scions, but the sons and daughters of the Schola Progenium hold fast.

Turn 4 Imperium:
Ambushing the Necron forces, Aleyn's Paladins tore into the Warriors with blessed storm bolter rounds, downing two of the xenos. Before they could react, the Grey Knights were within them, cleaving another four with psychically enhanced halberds and falchions. Despite the heroism of the warriors of Titan, the same could not be said of the Scions, who pulled back out of the building, avoiding the deadly barrage of the Annihilation Barge, with the Tempestor Prime frantically calling for reinforcements from Colonel Halter's Cadians.

Turn 4 Necrons:
Seeing no more guardsmen to harvest for the Daerekh Dynasty, the Annihilation Barge hovered back to the archeotech luminator it was guarding.
The Warriors, in the centre, were instead being slaughtered, losing more and more of their number to the Grey Knights. A final swing from a dying Necron rent the armour and flesh of Paladin Gauvain, but the Warriors had been reduced to a third their starting size now - the battle was swinging towards the Imperium.

Turn 5 Imperium:
The Scion forces on the left flank move back into the building, seizing the teleport homer under the gaze of the Scarabs and Annihilation Barge's guns, and unleashing a volley of hotshot rounds up at the beetle-like creatures, killing a few creatures in the swarm.
The last of the Necron Warriors were slaughtered by the Grey Knight Paladins, leaving their faltering reanimation protocols wasted and their limbs strewn on the red earth. Buoyed by their merciless onslaught, the Paladins overextended their melee into the waiting warscythe of the Daerekh Overlord. Paladins Gauvain and Emeric were cut down by the eldritch alien weapon in three deadly swings, leaving Paragon Aleyn open to land a cleaving blow on the Overlord. The two warriors circled eachother in the shadow of the ruined shrine, warscythe clashing on Nemesis force halberd.

Imperium Turn 5 wrote:
Paladin Aleyn and the Necron Overlord named 'Asim' meet amidst the corpses of their fallen brethren.

Turn 5 Necrons:
Scions in it's gunsights, the Annihilation Barge fires its entire arsenal at the human interlopers. The tesla annihilator strikes true as it has throughout the entire engagement, and the Tempestor Prime is the only one left standing, his cloak smoking with the remnants of the tesla blast that has left his comrades charred corpses.
The duel between the Overlord and the last Grey Knight is predictable as it is fast: try as the Paragon might, it is no Daemonspawn that claims his life, but Overlord Asim of the Daerekh Dynasty. Striking with relentless precision and speed, Aleyn's halberd simply cannot match the speed of the Overlord's warscythe. The Paragon lies smouldering and broken at the base of the shrine, his Aegis Terminator Armour cut open by Asim's impossibly precise warscythe strikes.

Necron Turn 5 wrote:
Asim's warscythe drips with the blood of the Paragon. The Daerekh Dynasty stands triumphant!

Endgame:
Surveying the battlefield, and the few forces he has left, Overlord Asim calls the retreat - his Scarabs carry off the strange book the Grey Knights had been after, and the Annihilation Barge departs with the archeotech luminator in tow.

Necron Objectives wrote:
The archeotech luminator glows ominously as the Annihilation Barge hauls it away.

Despite the Grey Knight's best efforts, the scarab swarms seize the heretical arcana. The newly awakening Crypteks will have much to study.

Colonel Halter warily leads his last squad of Guardsmen through the red wastes, lasguns trained on any sign of the alien threat. Despite their overwhelming strength over his forces, there is no trace of them, beyond the dead Cadians and Scions in their wake. Not even the corpses of the mysterious warriors which fought the Necrons under the shrine can be found. They're not the only thing missing, he notes. Half of the objectives are gone, claimed by the enemy forces. With a frustrated roar, Halter calls the retreat.

Imperial Objectives wrote:
Halter's guardsmen are left to haul the explosive device back to Imperial lines - careful not to trigger the volatile weapon.

The burnt corpses of Squad 2 and two units of Scions has paid for the capture of the teleport homer by the last survivor of the massacre.

He doesn't show it on his emotionless faceplate, but Asim is proud. With less forces, only a mere patrol, his vanguard forces have claimed a minor victory over the upstart Imperium on Tute Oriel.

MvP wrote:
The Annihilation Barge responsible for wiping out three squads over the course of the engagement was recorded on a Scion's pict-feed before disintegration. The same vehicle was later spotted by Imperial forces engaging the Daerekh Dynasty on other occasions, marked by the favour of Overlord Asim.

Summary
Spoiler:
So, pleasantly surprised by the new edition and the result! I didn't need to dumb down my play, and actually came very close at the end, with the duel being the final factor. Of course, Underdog allowed for that victory (despite me being worried about me overpowering the Necrons) and a celebratory purchase was in order after that, adding a Destroyer to the winner's list.

The rules themselves were slicker than 7th, but took some time to explain and show to my girlfriend, who'd never played 40k beforehand. However, we both enjoyed the game, and 8th seems like a fine edition to me!

(Please can I add that my annihilation barge, bases for most warriors and the overlord were not finished - I may be a messy painter but not THAT much) Still, a really fun game, and a really well written battle report Sgt_Smudge!

Resized all the pictures as they felt a little too small.

Thank you all very much, and I'm probably going to do a second one of these when we get round to another game. Any things that could be improved on?

I could win a major victory, rather than just from the underdog rule?

I really enjoyed it. I don't have any improves either. If you do another could you keep putting the captains at the bottem of the pcitures - from sgt. (insert name)'s pict feed before disintegration. I thought that was a great touch and loved it.

I was more than happy to have it kicked!

I've done one other, also uploaded here. Battle at the Airfield, with Necrons, Guardsmen and a Knight (oh my!). Most models in that are painted, and the narrative is still there.
Unfortunately, that's all the matches I've had a chance to do, but with an upcoming holiday soon, I should be able to do a third.

Watch this space!

"And what are the achievements of your fragile Imperium? It is a corpse rotting slowly from within while maggots writhe in its belly.
