The game looks awesome, but holy crap is that expensive for just cardboard chits.

Edit: $70 shipping to the US for a full pre-order is a no go... sorry. I was willing to pay the premium for cardboard Epic, but I won't throw $70 at shipping alone, on a $190 board-game.

Not seeing the appeal myself - it doesn't look like "cardboard epic" at all. Maybe an epic amount of cardboard?

Looks interesting but i'd like to look through the rules and see close ups of the actual components before i'd think about purchasing. Also wouldn't buy with that shipping price.

Their game system is a ton of fun, and the chits have great art.

BUT...

...yikes!

That shipping is a definite deal-killer.

Not sure about the game, but that's quite possibly the most annoying website I've seen in an awful long time.

I couldn't even figure out how to get the insane shipping estimate, so kudos to those guys.

$70 is beyond ridiculous.

$70 is par for the course when shipping anything bigger than a single book from the USA (if you do order a single book the shipping costs basically double the price, though).

It just seems that it's also the case the other way around. It's also why I don't ever buy anything nor back anything coming directly from the states.

Unless something has changed, if you are in the US and use the US shipping store option, the shipping on the big $150 bundle is free. I absolutely love Heroes of Normandie and almost pulled the trigger on the 150 option except that I couldn't justify it alongside GenCon costs.

*Bummer- seems the bundle was an exclusive for the pre-preorder that they ran for a short time.

I'll definitely buy Heroes of Black Reach, but only at retail.

On their terribad forum the company is suggesting that people bulk order as a group of friends, as shipping is 55euro for any sized order.

Its ridiculous, and their snide remark of "We're not Amazon.com" when someone criticized their pricing didn't help... but IF anyone here happens to feel like they are going to order, i'd definitely piggy-back if a few like-minded folks end up splitting the shipping.

Is that actually the quote or was there more to it? if that was the direct quote how is that snide and not just being honest?

Expecting small operations to offer free or heavily discounted shipping no matter what or where things are being sent is a ridiculous expectation for a customer to have, but sadly it is an expectation that many buyers operate under thanks to places like Amazon. Shipping fees are ludicrously high everywhere, and big operations like Amazon or Walmart can subsidize that cost, but most companies can't do the same, so the real shipping price get passed on to the customer.

It sucks but a big box of cardboard isn't cheap to ship, especially overseas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Then you find a US partner, or distributor like every other small business, if you have any serious desire to penetrate a new market. Mantic, and countless others had to do it, and these folks apparently are big enough to have PC ports of their games, and sign big IPs like 40k.

I don't think its an unreasonable expectation to find some middle ground between "free shipping" and adding 50% onto the price of an already premium priced game (How many card-board chit boardgames exceed $150 these days? Seriously)

The price of the product has little to do with how much it costs to ship it...

I meant that its already a big ask of a consumer to be interested in such an expensive product, but doing so with an insane shipping cost bolted on must make it virtually impossible to find a customer.

Signing a big IP doesn't mean gak. Look at Spartan. How are they doing? Halo was a bigger license than 40k, and now Spartan is gone.

Getting distribution isn't as easy as snapping your fingers and making it happen. I don't disagree that the shipping is high or that it will turn off potential customers, but I also don't agree with the statement "We're not Amazon" is snide. It is an honest assessment of the situation and one that merits mentioning to people who all too easily forget that shipping and handling aren't imaginary costs used to pad a company's bottom line, but actual expenses that need to be paid by someone. Most times it's the customer.

They had to reissue large swathes of their prior game which this game is based on, because they hadn't even hired a proper English translator, and sort of were winging it on the instruction-booklet.

Hello,

I want to answer to some of you concerning the different remarks.

1) Shipping

USA : Shipping is free for USA from 150€ on our website, the shipping is handled by Iello Games (so, we use their shipping prices). Don't forget to click on "US shop" on our website.
France, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and Netherlands : Shipping is free from 100€ on our website, the shipping is handled by Meeple Logistics. Don't forget to click on "World shop" on our website.

For the Canadian gamers, we are sorry, it is the best prices we can have but shipping from USA to Canada is REALLY expensive.

In order to give the most informations for understanding why the shipping is like this, the core box weights near 3 kilograms (6,6 pounds) because it contains 6 terrain tiles (30cm x 30xm x 2mm / 11,8 inches x 11,8 inches x 0,8 inches) + 6 punchboards of the same size + 100 cards.

Games with minis are much lighter than our game, that's why the shipping may change a lot.

For the quote "We are not Amazon.com", it is just to be honest and to explain why we cannot have competitive prices like Amazon.

2) Translation

The translation was made by a professional translator for the Compendium (all Heroes System World War 2 rules) and we use the same text. All the additional texts will be translated by the same guy. Ask people who have the book to have an idea of the quality of the translation and not any people who took a look to the first version of Heroes.

I won't do it :-D I am not a native english speaker as you can read it ^^

In some weeks, I hope we will able to show you the rulebook (even if it is not complete, some recruitment options or terrain rules may be added later). Clem is currently working on.

3) Current dispatch

I manage it and as I explained on the project updates, I have an health problem that reduce a lot of my ability to do as much works as I normally do. BUT, in order to reassure you, I don't work on this project.

4) Relation between our financial situation and license

Signing a big IP doesn't mean gak. Look at Spartan. How are they doing? Halo was a bigger license than 40k, and now Spartan is gone.

You are right! Nothing to add ;-)

I keep this subject opens in order to answer to your other questions :-) Have a nice week-end!

I'll be the absolute first to apologize, as I didn't find the "US Store" when attempting to place my order. All links to the product pre-orders default to the World-Wide Store, and thus the horrific shipping estimates.

To anyone here attempting to navigate the shop... don't click on product, and instead first visit the "Shops" tab, then selecting the easy-to-miss US button.

I understand you may have a bad experience with our website. We are minding to a better way for this known problem.

But next week, we will have a better website for this preorder (the www.heroes-of-black-reach.com website will be improved, more responsive, more easy to use ;-)

That won't be a problem. I felt like a jerk for conveying incorrect information, so I immediately pre-ordered everything from you guys earlier today. Again, I felt stupid for the mistake, and am looking forward to your game, especially with improved translations. Yeah, a friend of mine had the original Heroes of Normandie, which we loved, but had to learn to play from fans online since the original book, wasn't... quite the best. :-p

If you preorder it by our website or by a shop who have access to Elite preorder (France, USA or Belgium for now), you will receive it next March, otherwise it will be in May 2018.

So, the first advantage is to receive it sooner. The second one is some gifts depending what you buy. If you buy the reinforcement pack (60€), you will receive one more expansion which includes Ork Freebooterz and Veteran Vanguard Squad (retail value : 20€). You have a discount on the storage System too.

Will you sell it in the USA though? Like how you sell Kharnage and Normandy? Like on Amazon and miniature market. I mean, that's a preorder that's 6 months away... Pretty long time for a preorder. Otherwise really might just be better to hold off til it is retail at the states and see the state of the game at that point.
