Hope this is the right subforum. Don't have an actual list for the army list section.

For a while now I've had some Tau lying around in their boxes and I think it's about time I made an army out of them. Not played since 6th edition so not sure what points to aim for (Used to play @1500)

I have the old Tau Battleforce box, mostly unprimed and on sprue, but some of the stealth suits I think are glued with maybe a fusion blaster on one? As well as that I have one box of pathfinders (Again some glued but not all). Finally, (And part of the reason why I want to build a list) I grabbed a good deal on eBay for an XV88 broadside.

So I guess my options are a little bit limited because I'd like to use the stuff I already have, and some things I can't really change (Like the stealth suits being glued up etc)

Welcome to the greater good. So to just to clarify... you are currently sitting with 3 XV8 Battlesuits on sprue, 3 built Stealth suits, 12 Fire warriors on sprue, a Piranha, 9 drones, 10 Pathfinders (plus their drones) and a Broadside. Correct?

My first advice is always buy what you think is cool, Also, don't go too crazy focusing on one particular unit until we have am actual codex.

There's nothing wrong with the stuff you have. Some Strikes, some Pathfinders, mix in some suits. Steaths are good now. I love the Ghostkeel model and it's also pretty solid. Voila, and army. Also, Commanders are fantastic right now, efficiency-wise, but that might not continue when the codex comes out so spam at your own risk,

I also love the Ghostkeel, might be worth a look.

Also, I have the Xenos Pt 2 codex I think with Tau in it? There's a new one coming?

@Hollow it's a bit confusing since I've had the models for a while. The XV88 is untouched as it's in the post right now but BNIB as I understand.

Then i'm not sure. I have 3 stealth suits glued up, one with a Fusion blaster I think. Also got a gun drone made up. Some infantry units, not sure if pathfinders or something else. The battleforce box is the old one with the yellow/desert coloured ones on the box.

I know the box to which you are referring. It contains 3 XV8 Crisis Battlesuits, 3 Stealth suits, 12 Firewarriors, a Piranha and some drones.

The T'au are currently in the Xenos 2 Index. There has been no confirmation as to when a codex will arrive (although next year at some point is a pretty safe bet)

Another question so as to help in the best way possible. Do you have a budget regarding future purchases? The collection you currently have doesn't include an HQ (which you will need to make a viable force)

Something you should definitely consider is magnets for your XV8 suits. This will allow you to try out a range of different weapon load-outs and make your suits viable whatever the future may bring.

I don't think I've even cut those off of the sprue so that should be achievable. Any good tips or vids for that? I've got 1500 pts of Space Marines from 6th edition, but never magnetized a model before.

No real budget I guess. Looking for something more fun than competitive though (Like the look of the big suits like Ghostkeel and Riptide, but they're pricey but one will likely be ok. Kroot are also great looking minis IMHO) HQ wise I hear that the basic commander in the battlesuit is the way to go usually for Tau (With 4 fusion blasters/Something? Don't have codex to hand ATM) , but would like to hear some more opinions on that.

Quad Fusion and quad Missile Pod are both solid options. Kroot are quite useful for bubble wrapping your army to counter first turn alpha strike shenanigans.

Also, just to throw this out there, these guys, https://wargameexclusive.com/product-category/greater-good/, make some pretty cool alternative Tau character models, and Tau pinups if that's your thing.

Ye Kroot seem to make a nice screening unit. Contrasts nicely in a Tau army as well from what I've seen. Very unique looking.

Some nice minis there, cheers for the link.

Bumping now I have more info. The only model glued from the Battleforce is a single stealth suit, which does indeed seem to have a Fusion blaster. What's the advantage/disadvantage of this vs the Burst cannons as I see lots of people choosing the latter?

Other than that, the rest of my glued stuff seems to come from the separate pathfinder box (Not sure on the drone though)

6 Pathfinders with pulse carbines + Gun drone.

[Could even use these just to test paint schemes and use the battleforce stuff for an army. Stuck between a white paint scheme, a red one or a grey/blue one like the Sa'Cea sept.]

With this in mind, would love to hear some advice on what I should equip the rest of the stuff with, optimization wise and looking to a 1000-1500 pt army in the future.

Some general pieces I've picked up from Dakka so far:

- Ghostkeels, with support and command rerolls, can be fething amazing as 3 to 5 infiltrating meltagun shots will ruin anyone's day. However, without support, Ghostkeels are decidedly average, with the same BS as a guardsmen. If you do run one (and I highly suggest you do, if only for the cool model), make sure you have enough markerlights and drones to support it.

- Speaking of drones, the more you have the better in our current Index. Point per point, they are more efficient than firewarriors when shooting at 18", they get buffed by the Cadre Fireblade, and, this is key, their Saviour Protocol special rule means that you can keep your valuable components around longer by having more of them around. The only downside is if you play a mission where each unit destroyed gives your opponent VP

- With the exception of the Crisis Suit Commander, Crisis Suits themselves are considered overpriced and under-efficient in 8th Edition, so for super competitive lists, you may want to leave them at home, but again, play what you think is cool. That being said, Tau Plasma Rifles have been seriously nerfed in 8th, so leave those off your suits for the time being.

- Vespids are now a thing. I've never played them before, but they're now worth considering.

- Commander Farside is now also considered un-competitive.

- Pathfinders remain the most efficient source of markerlights in the Tau codex, beating out the Marker Drones. Also, their Pulse Accelerator Drone works wonders with Firewarriors and a Cadre Fireblade (which gives them an additional pulse shot at half their weapon's ranges). Use this for a neat little combo.

- If using a Broadside, the High Yield Missile Pod is generally more efficient and does more statistical damage than the Broadside's Railgun with the exception of T8 targets, but even then the difference is marginal.

- Riptides are now considered overpriced. If you didn't get on the hype train for 7th edition, it'd be better to wait for the codex to see if they get adjusted.

- If you are considering running Stealthsuits, there are different schools of thought. One says to run them without any upgrades. I side with the people who say upgrade them with an ATS. While this makes them gakking expensive (on par with a Terminator), their mobility, the AP -1 to the burst cannon, and their durability makes it worth it, in my opinion, but your mileage may vary according to your area's meta.

That's all off the top of my head. Welcome to the Greater Good!
