If you trigger an effect adding a Pox Walker to a unit (either their innate rule or the new DG stratagem) can the unit grow beyond the unit size it started the game as?

I.E. I bring a 20-man Pox Walker unit and park a unit of 20 Chaos Cultists within 7" of them and use the DG stratagem. Before the PW unit takes any casualties my opponent shoots and kills 5 nearby cultists. Do I now have a 25-man PW unit?

Yes. There are other threads on this if you search (or look a few threads down).

Yes, you can exceed the starting number of poxwalkers as far as I understand. Other similar rules, like the Daemons Daemonic Icon, have restrictions such as "return D6 SLAIN models to the unit" but the Walkers have a pretty blunt "add a model".

Bear in mind though you can only use that strat on YOUR movement phase. If you're going to go for something like that with the cultists they'll have to die to Overwatch.

It's activated in the movement phase and lasts until the next movement phase, so there are a lot of phases where casualties can add up.
Only real problem is you have to have the unit deployed to use the stratagem.

Of interest , there are rules in the rulebook faq for placing new models, which say you have to place the new models in coherency with models that were in the unit at the start of the phase.
If you gain models across multiple phases, you could gain a fair bit of movement.

I was just wondering, in matched play, do you pay points for the new models, especially when taking the unit above it's starting size?

Does this prevent Necron reanimating?

In matched play you cannot go above the starting unit limit. If you start with 10 Pox Walkers then you cannot exceed 10 even if you would normally be able to add models into the unit

no it does not prevent Necron Reanimation

If a dead Necron becomes a poxwalker you can't reanimate it.

Actually that's been covered in a faq, you can (ruins the fluff of it, but makes the rules work) with

What happens to the additional poxwalker?

The same thing that happens to Guilliman when he gets turned into a Chaos Spawn. Nothing. He just gets back up after you kill him and his corpse rises as a Chaos Spawn too.

It's a game so some reality-bending bull is possible.

It's called a thick skin. The Jersey born have it innately.

I've spent the last 20 minutes searching through both the BRB and the FAQ and I cannot find anywhere that it says this.

Cant seem to find it anymore. I do recall seeing something, might of been an FAQ or even the designers notes, that addressed this under a Reinforcements section/question. Basically, it said units that can recover models don't have to pay for the models (as its not a new unit) but they cannot go over the starting amount in a Matched Play game. I'll keep looking, otherwise I'd say throw the question to GW.

RAW looks like you can - both from a codex and BRB POV.

Although I don't want to be that guy that says "if the books says I can't do it, then I can"

Hopefully a FAQ addresses the question soon.

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

Looks like the FAQ says you don't have to pay points when adding models to an existing unit. Ergo you don't have to pay when you go over your starting limit.

Q: What about rules that add models to existing units; do I
need to pay reinforcement points for those models?
A: No (unless the rule itself says otherwise).
