I was reading the forum today and a thought popped into my head! If you're like me you hate named characters in your army because your main hq is a character you named yourself for your own lore purposes (for me my Ork Warboss leads my orks and my Dark Angels Librarian leads my elite DA squad. Each have their own name and back story I wrote myself). However, those named characters have amazing stats that can really limit your effectiveness if you don't play them! Therefore, what if we used our own characters and models (You migh, like me, customise your model to show off they lead your force) but just give them the stats for a named character. For example, my Ork Warboss Skumdreg is the leader of my army and I want him to have the same abilities as Ghaz (a named character). So I pay Ghaz points and basically play the model as if it is ghaz but cll him Skumdreg! It seems simple enough but might be tricky if you want your Ultra Marine Capt to be Girly Man! What do you guys think of this? (Obviously it would be limited to friendly play and I'm sure GW would have a heart attack if they learned this was a common thing).

If the basic wargear is correct, nobody cares if you do this.

People do this all the time.

I wasn't talking about people making their own characters... I was talking about people giving models they own the stats of existing characters in the index and codex. Eg, giving a space marine captain the stats of a primarch.

I've seen that before. You just use your name and model, but the points cost and rules of the named one. That's fairly common. Just make sure that said model is roughly the same in terms of size (no grot-sized Mortarions ) and you're golden.

I've seen that quite a bit too. If you use a Marine Captain as Guilliman I would base him on a base that is Guilliman's size and I think you would golden.

I believe this is "count as", which is why a ton of people were miffed about certain characters being locked to certain keywords. Like Pask being locked to Cadians or Strakken locked to Catachans.

As long as you don't model for advantage, you're good to go.

With special wargear and warlord traits, GW opened the door to customization of characters, but it feels (to me) like they didn't commit fully to the idea. Too much free candy for the named specials.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

We're adding something like this to a campaign system we're working on. Winning a game generates X number of points toward capturing a portion of a planet. A lead character (no named characters) can sacrifice some of these points to gain an advanced trait.

Each to their own. As long as the model is reasonably WYSIWYG, there's nothing wrong with this.

Personally, though, it's not for me. I like my own characters too much to pattern them after an official named character. The closest I've ever done like this was Coteafriel (see below) because at one point you couldn't have a legal Inquisition army without Coteaz. Even then, it's basically a clone who is supposed to be exactly like the special character in question.

I feel boxed in by having to have the exact same loadout as a named character. It's also the reason why I absolutely hate GW's dropping of options for generic characters, because it moves them in the same place special characters already occupy. It's dull.

Supreme grand master Fargo of the grey Knights whom was lost to the warp along with all the other grey knight storm shields is my stand in draigo because draigo is a joke.

I love draigo, but I prefer my own flavor in my armies.

I do this as well. I have a homebrew BA successor chapter, and since BA lack a generic Chapter Master entry, I have to use Dante's rules and stats for my Chapter Master. Unfortenately, that also means being limited in wargear :(

As long as the counts as is reasonable (an ork warboss counting as another ork warboss or a SM captain counting as another SM captain for example), it is fine.
What is not fine is something counting as something totally different. A space marine counting as a Primarch is not okay, nor is an Ork Boy counting as an Eldar Farseer or a cultist as a Chaos Space Marine. The model has to at least resemble the one it is counting as somewhat.

The problem with this is the locked-into-keywords business.

I am playing the 2nd Concordian Independent Superheavy Tank Regiment, not Cadia.

Besides, the special characters have super jumped the shark in some ways: Katerina Malinenko, my regimental commander, carries a relatively normal (if thin) fencing-sabre weapon (can provide pictures on request I think).

But the IG special characters have an Ork Powerclaw, two hotshot laspistols, a banner, a heavy bolter, a shotgun + bionics, or a Leman Russ tank.

Just give him a cool backstory. My captain is made of Coteaz and is named "Acting-Primarch Alexei Fedorovitch" My others include two other Captains and a Living Saint, which is just a weaker, cheaper Celestine, named Saint Kereus. It's okay to do this and you should simply, for fun reasons.
