I've run repeatedly into the problem that a fellow IG player uses characters capable of giving orders and/or psykers to massively buff his troops.
Deployment usually consists of buff characters behind an infantry squad on ruins, whereas the characters hide on the lower level out of LOS. Additional infantry squads deploy to deny deep strikes to the sides. Deep striking behind is impossible because..well.. there the table ends!
Midfield gets taken by Chimera, Russes and Sentinels and the occasional spare infantry.

That usually puts me in a bad position... I cannot stop him giving orders or buffing the save of units... Deep Striking plasma Scions in cover with a +1 to saves suddenly are tough to dislodge, especially if they reroll

So I cannot DS anything because he correctly screens his units.
I cannot snipe because there is no way to get LOS without getting to the side (into the infantry squads) or behind the ruins (where within 9" the table ends).
I cannot target the character with LOS ignoring artillery....

So am I fethed or is there some strategy that I do not see that helps me deal with that? Do I have to suffer 10 orders with no way of dealing with it?

Remove the ruins in Deployment zones.

Once I started doing this, all my games became a lot funnier, even for gunline players. When one army can just sit there and shoot protected by some kind of cover, games are boring.

Cover bonuses should be EARNED, not GIVEN. You want to get cover ? Come and get it.

When I started playing my opponents loved to play "Bunker assault", where they would just sit in bunkers across the table and I (Tyranids) would have to cross a no man's land to reach them. I almost quit the game back then, until I asked them if we could shuffle the board a little. From then the game became awesome.

Well that is not a strategy per sé, but it works

It's just a thing we kind of always did - spread the terrain evenly around the table to not create "kill zones" - think of 7th where AP was all or nothing. That ofc now is different...

I'll have to talk with my opponent and at least replace ruins with forests - you can have your cover, but there is no absolute safe spot anymore. He'll at least have to dedicate a vehicle to cover the character.. from one side.
