Hey everyone!

I want to utilize a Lieutenant for my Ultramarine company, but since there are just few to no references how they should look and feel compared to the rest of the units, I need some oppinions.

Currently there are two "reference" designs I found so far:

One is the Primaris Lieutenant from the DI Box set, which is pretty much a normal primaris marine with fancy helmet color and that little thingie at his belt (dunno how it is called).
The other is the 2nd company overview from the Codex, which shows a heavily decorated marine lieutenant, which utilizes the fancy backpack from the SM Commander Box (the one with those eagles on the side).

Since it's an HQ and fluff wise should be the 2nd in command of the company, the primaris design seems pretty boring to me. On the other side, this eagle styled backpack seems way to much bling bling, especially compared to most captain models.

The other thing I came across were capes. Usually all captains wear them, but I could not find any reference if it is some kind of heraldry or not. Currently I'm considering giving the lieutenant a small one, but I'm not sure if it is to much of an honor.

So long story short: What do you think are appropriate assets an lieutenant shall have?

Personally, the different helm design is solid for me. However, I wouldn't go for a cape - I recently added capes to some models of mine which looked more like lieutenants without the cape than before.

I'd perhaps try for the crests on the helmets, preferably going forward. This would help them stick out, but not so much as the Captain with his fancy cloak.

Personally would use up parts from the stern guard kit to make a relatively ornate dude.

great place to use those back pack banners too.

Lieutenants also use the skull icon as their battle field role marking.

A lot depends on how heavily you bling out the rest of your army. He should be somewhere between a sarge and a captain. I'm building a JP one mostly from VV parts and the UM upgrade sprue. Still in the planning stages.

I figure the crested Mk IV helms will work quite nicely as a mark of rank; I've got a few models I'd been doing as praetor level officers for 30k, which seems to be an equivalent rank.

I fiddled a bit arround with my bits and I decided against the cloak. The question I asked myself was: What feats distinguish the models from another? Captains have their cloaks and heavy heraldry, Seargeants have a thingie on their backpack, Sternguards have that very long thing between their legs... you know, the toga. So I decided for a more simple look with some special assets.

So far I used the front from the SM Commander box, which comes closest to what is shown in the codex. Also I decided for normal legs with the usual acessories (Bolt pistol, seals, pouches, skirt). I gonna use normal Shouldpads aswell, since I don't like those highly decorative ones on a fighting brigade. Some honory items are ok, but carving a couple of centimeters thick ornaments into ceramite plates? My boys won't have time for that. I mean we are living in a universe where you as a fighter don't have much time to worry about your looks. It's not like that there somehow magically appears a bunch of modern weapons and ice water washed armors along with improved space marines....oh wait....

I'm still not sure whether to use that fancy eagle backpack or not, for the reasons mentioned above.

If you have more ideas or oppionions, please let me know!
