I play with goreaxes as I play Gore Pilgrims with that banner that can give them re-roll to hit (due to already re-rolling 1's)

I think it depends on your build and how you plan on using them.

If they are getting a save buff from somewhere (cover, iron flesh prayer, mystic shield) or if you fight a lot of no-rend enemies the fists can be nice, but there isn't really an instance where going dual axes is a bad thing. TBH the main reason to run fists is because the starter set models are easily obtained at low prices; if you have the actual blood warriors kit it's hard to justify not going dual axes.

All else being equal, the re-roll 1s on dual axes will come up more often. I would generally go that direction unless you already have a reliable source of to-hit rerolls. The chance for a mortal wound just doesn't trigger often enough to justify it in my mind.
