Back in 2013 I wrote to cyanide studios asking what they were doing with AT-43 .

4 years later i got a reply. Good to see they kept a list of people interested i suppose!

so they are planning to sell the , no idea who too but watch this space I suppose.

Hi Nic,

Almost four years later... It's decided! We are going to sell our AT-43 assets.

Regards,

Joe

Dear joe,

Thankyou for the prompt reply.it's great to know you have plans for At-43 as I know myself and many others still want to get hold of the many out of production miniatures.
Hope all goes well and look forward to seeing what you do with the game.
Merry Christmas and a happy New year,
Nic.

Hi Nic,

I'm happy to say (from our point of view) that you have joined a list of
interested parties. We'll be sorting out the future of AT-43 in early
2014 and we certainly will be getting back to you. A precise date is
difficult, but it will definitely be within the 1st quarter.

Until then "Bonnes fêtes de fin d'année".

Not a huge rumour I know but with all the buying up and shifting around of IP this year it seems very timely.

I don't know how well the rules could be adapted for modern play, especially as a boardgame, but this property seems ripe for a Kickstarter resurrection to me. The background is as relevant as it was ten years ago if not more so, the vehicle designs are still exciting and fresh, and the factions are varied and colorful.

But weren't the original molds and masters all destroyed?

All the original steel molds were rusting away in China as R-E owed the factory some 800,000 euros... and that was three years ago. Basically, the molds are gone.

I do not want some crappy half-assed Kickstarter for a half-assed miniatures game. The original is one of my favs and I still own a ton of stuff for it, as do most members of my inner gaming circle.

I pray that a video game developer acquired the rights and will make a Ground Control or Dawn of War style game with them.

I get very confused about AT 43, did it turn into DUST Tactics or did DUST Tactics turn into AT 43?

Nicromancer, are you sure they are already sold? The tense they used is "We are going to sell", not "They are sold"...?

AT-43 is a separate universe and game entirely. AT-43 is a date, and AT stands for "After Trauma". It is a science fiction setting. And honestly, one of my favorite science fiction settings of all time.
All the rulebooks and army books have been released at free PDF's, and can be viewed here https://www.orderofgamers.com/games/at-43/

Thanks for that link, Doug!

I highly recommend reading the army books for their background. This is a setting that has a lot of depth and scale to it.

Warlord's got Gates of Antares and are still pimpin' in quite hard with tons of plastics releases and community run events and whatnot. Wayland (Warcradle) just bought all the Spartan stuff and they own WWX as well, so..... running out of other big companies to buy the IP.
Plus, the fact there's none of the steel molds for the awesome plastics.
This is why I hope it's a video game developer, or maybe an RPG. At the most, a board game, that maybe reboots/fleshes out the awesome AT-43 Tactics boardgame.

Dude I remember when the Big Reveal of what the Therians actually are happened, and every AT-43 fan lost their minds all at once.

Yeah, the Therian revelation has more impact than the original Codex: Necrons fluff-drop. It really ties the whole universe into a cohesive whole while opening the door for multitudes of possible expansions, or even reboots. It's brilliant.

No worries on the tense mixup, nicromancer! Thanks for the heads up on this, will be interesting to see if a sale does indeed go through (and if so, who picks it up). Lots of IP moving lately in the wargaming space!

Paolo Parente was the designer of both game systems and imagery. As I recall, he originally pitched AT-43 to Rackham as "Alternate Timeline 1943" which was, essentially Dust. Rackham was sold on the idea, agreements were made and development and production began. But Rackham wanted a more Sci Fi version (as a counterpoint to their Confrontation fantasy system) and, while at the time Paolo was willing to go along with them, they eventually had a falling out due to the usual "creative differences". Contractually, Paolo couldn't take his toys with him as he left the playground so he went back to his original alternate WW2 ideas, retooled and rebranded them as Dust and brought them to market under the studio he created.

I would very much like to see AT-43 return - - - not necessarily the same game, and I really doubt we will see the same miniatures and surely not pre-painted plastics. But I would like to see the IP return, perhaps with some redesigned models in resin for a KS and with a smaller model-count game system at first, something that uses small (3-5 man) squads and maybe one vehicle.

I am the polar opposite - the appeal of AT-43 was large interesting plastic prepainted kits. $10 unpainted metal models, without the large beautiful plastic robots and vehicles, would make it look like another generic sci-fi game in a sea of Maelstrom's Edges.

I absolutely love AT-43, the IP, background, rules, models, everything about it, but I believe re-releasing it at a miniatures game correctly would require several million dollars in doing it correctly. Half-assing it would result in failure.
I'd much rather see the IP in a video game, RPG, or a board game form, at most.

Sure there are some vehicles that would be prohibitively expensive in resin but the Firetoad-sized stuff could work well enough, along with smaller squads. Some kind of character, a Firetoad, three 4-5 man squads, and some TAC suits; that could be a UNA army. Design a game that leaned on using dense terrain on smaller (4x4) play areas.

If they have digital assets I would do something with this although it would be resin or metal and they wouldn't be prepainted. Although I could also see a board game also being done with this.

However, considering how old it is, how long it has been gone, it would take an investment before there would be any return... which kind of puts me out of the running as the only reason I offered as much for Firestorm was because it would have been a faster return.

I really liked the setting of AT-43, and the armies were fun. The sort of generic-ish marine/Guards were nothing amazing. But I dug the Therans (sp?) with their Anime-like vibe, the Red Blok, with their russian/guard look, and the Big white Space Gorillas were AMAZING!! I loved their cool weapons and hover vehicles, and I'm happy that I bought everything made for them when they were initially released. AT-43 had a lot of interesting takes on Sci-fi, that most game companies hadn't really gotten into, but as mentioned, since their demise we've seen new properties like Infinity and Antares come up with interesting new stuff as well. I would love it if someone who wanted to do it justice picked up the license, but most of the bigger game studios already have their 'sci-fi game'.

Unlikely - CAV has not exactly done all that well for them.

The Auld Grump - to be clear - I personally would have more interest in AT43, but....

I for one fell in love with AT-43 from the intro set onwards through all the drama. I have pretty big armies for all the main 4 races (UNA, Red Blok, Therians, and Karmans) and will absolutely never part with them. They are all great models (the UNA has some definite crappy prepaints on some of their infantry, but still better than all other competitors), and the game plays quite well, too, with some interesting innovations, like the command system of operating units.

Interesting, too, how GW basically made an amalgamation of Therian and Blok striders when they released the Dune Crawler. The bottom is almost shot-for-shot Therian.

I know it wouldn't be popular around here, but AT-43 would be best served by being in the hands of Paolo Parente. He has the know how to resurrect and maybe improve on the plastics. Dust and AT-43 have a similar heritage but appeal to different groups.

Oh. Whoops. Sorry about the spoilers, then.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Rackham didn't control their outsourced production, and it cost them everything. AT-43 was workable as a concept and business, if overpackaged. It took too much shelf space to appeal to retailers, and too much volume to appeal to e-trade.
However what killed it was availability, yes Rackham ended up owing the manufacturer, but they also milked Rackham and were very tardy on production. Major stock line items were unavailable for up to a year at a time.

The rules also needed attention, though not so much as other game systems. Balance was poor though, with some factions particularly Red Blok had a very dubious selection of units, with range weapons fluctuating between overpowered and useless with very little in between.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
