I know there are only 3 units of Custodes ATM in 40k and without an HQ it is not a complete army. But I thought it would be nice to have a thread to discuss Custodes heavy armies.

I start off with a few question

1. How do you equip you Custodian Guard squats? I have 10 still in the sprue so i am not sure how I should build them. I have already build 5. The Shield Captain has a spear. The Vexilla guy has a shield. Another one guy with a spear and two with shield and blades
2. do you use/have more then one Vexilla

3. What HQ do you use?

So we do have a Custodes thread but it's kinda old and hasn't been posted in for awhile so I imagine a new one is fine too.

Make sure you put a Power Knife on your Vexilia. He's good for more than just standing around and buffing.

I honestly don't like the spears very much in 8th though some people swear by them. I get a lot more mileage over coating the squad in 3++ (for only 10 points more per 5 no less) than I do out of moving from S5 to S6 (which really only makes it so you 2+ T3, 3+ T5 and 5+ T10 and T11).

When building an off-brand Imperial Army the best HQ choice is always Celestine followed by Voldus. Celestine is a cheap powerhouse who can do just about anything you want her to do from tanking to killing to objective grabbing. Voldus is recommended because he's the only Imperium psyker I've seen that can Deny 3 times in a single phase, thus giving you the most blanket protection. He can also snag the 3 best Grey Knight spells (Gate, Vortex and either Sanc or Purge) then manifest them all.

So I'd say a 'standard' Custodes battalion should be something like:

Celestine
Voldus
Custodes
Custodes
Custodes

Which should cost about 1,150 and leave you 850 for transports or dreadnought support.

I I like Inquisitor Hector Rex for the 3x deny attempts at only 100 pts as a Custodes HQ. Not the damage dealer Voldus is, but cheaper and the psychic discipline plays nicely with all imperial forces.

Somehow he just looks right leading them.

I didn't notice Hector has the triple deny! He's not a bad budget choice either. Inq. psychic tree doesn't offer much for Custodes but full powered Smite is not to be underestimated.

Greyfax isn't bad as a cheap Smite option either if that's what you're looking for.

First off thanks for the advise.

Ilike the idea of an iquisitor for the HQ. I just finished reading the book The Carrion throne.

I like the spears for the mostly for the looks. I think they look great just like in the fluff. And they give you a 24” shooting attack but now when I think about it if I but 2 spears in each squad and assume I have 3 squads in total I would get six 24” shots. Hm when I think about I am not sure I should really care about those 6 shots.

I am also so thinking about getting 1 or to Vindicare assassins for killing pyskers and characters.

Do you think the the Prosecutors are a good addition for a Custodes army I am not so sure because they are a soft target compared to the Custodes units. I know almost every infantry unit is soft compared to Custodes but. An assassin could not be targeted. And the fore would be tough to kill.

what about 2 or 3 primaris Psykers?

What are your thoughts on those points?

Prosecutors are handy against smite spam, especially daemons. They are decent. No point buying them a rhino, obviously.

Contemptors are fantastic. The land raider is a tricky choice. It's vulnerable to getting locked, but whatever locks it then has to live with the custodes' charge.

Hector rex is awesome, too. Arias is just plain brutal against anything daemonic, potentially allowing him to kill more models than he has attacks...

Anathema Psykana are a soft target. But they also offer you the things Custodes lack, and two things their culexus alternative lacks:

-Pskyer defence
-Numbers and board control
-Crowd Control

Custodians are brutal up close. Guardian Spear bolters are surprisingly effective; AP-1, damage 2 goes a long way against primaris equivalents, but 260 points for 5 guys is never going to win a small arms duel and can't afford to sit at arm's length babysitting an objective. Bolter armed sisters can, and between bolter and especially flamer squads, can rack up enough S4 Damage 1 shots to cut the custodes a path through the conscripts, ork boyz and gaunt to something actually worth sticking a guardian spear into...

Funny, I have all those units slowly getting assembled and painted, except HQ Celestine and Voldus. Hector Rex was gonna be my go-to HQ, and I plan to use the excellent FW Custode Tribune Ixion Hale model as my generic Inquisitor in Terminator Armor HQ addition or option. Love adding the assassins to the list, but is the Culexus really needed if you already have a few SoS units running around for anti-psyker help?

I thought to put a 5 flamer sisters and 5 sword sisters in a Null Maiden Rhino, but I'm not sure it'd last very long.

I wish I could squeeze in an Imperial Knight model for some extra firepower.

Anyone had luck using the Ven Contemptor Dreads in the list? If so, how many and how did you use?

I am trying to make a list for a local tournament, 1500 pts, but I don't know if I should take 10 custodian with vexilla and another squad of 5, or 3 squad of five one with a vexilla.

My list is there, note that due to the rules of the tournament I cannot take units other than Inquisition, Assassins, sisters of silence or custodes. Forge World not allowed too.

HQ : - Inquisitor Greyfax

Elite : - Eversor assassin
- Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought with multi-melta

Troops : - 10 Custodians, 1 vexilla and storm shield, 9 guardian spears
- 5 custodian with guardian spears

HS : - Venerable land raider

1499 pts

So, thoughts ?

PS : I don't really want to take custodes with sword and board. Also I don't plan to win the tournament but to have fun, that said I don't want to lose too badly.
PPS : it's a little event, 20 players max
